Botany.- Theophrastus. De Historia plantarum libri decem, first edition edited by Joannes Bodaeus à Stapel, double column, text in parallel Greek and Latin, fine engraved pictorial title, numerous woodcut botanical illustrations in text, woodcut decorative initials, small worm trace at foot of first few ff., diminishing in size as proceeds, last half or so with a couple of small wormholes to upper margins, turning into a trace to last few ff., 3H5 short tear within text with minor loss, 5N3 short tear to lower corner, just touching 1 letter, occasional spotting and light staining or water-staining, contemporary vellum, spine in compartments and with later gilt filets, small black floral motifs and a green morocco label, covers with blind-stamped arabesque centre-pieces, lacking ties, piece of vellum missing from spine, a few small nicks, little stained and marked, [Hunt 240], folio, Amsterdam, Hendrick Laurensz, 1644.⁂ One of the best editions of Theophrastus.'It is interesting not only because of the brilliance of the editing, but, curiously enough, to the American botanist as well, for involving in the discussion certain species from Virginia, other parts of the New World, and Asia. The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Some were merely borrowed from l'Ecluse or de Lobel, but others seem original in this work.' (H.H. Bartlett in Fifty-five Rare Books, quoted by Hunt).

Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, she lost her sight and hearing after a bout of illness at the age of nineteen months. She then communicated primarily using home signs until the age of seven when she met her first teacher and lifelong companion Anne Sullivan, who taught her language, including reading and writing; Sullivan's first lessons involved spelling words on Keller's hand to show her the names of objects around her. She also learned how to speak and to understand other people's speech using the Tadoma method. After an education at both specialist and mainstream schools, she attended Radcliffe College of Harvard University and became the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. His drawings were perfected and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books about Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. Variant of the 1810 edition, containing two parts (in this copy bound in reverse order). The first part ("Sketches") is illustrated with 42 aquatints coloured by hand, representing, above all, popular costumes and views of localities, followed by 13 equally coloured aquatints, with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms. This should be followed by the "Revue historique...", not illustrated, which in the present copy is bound at the beginning of the volume. The text is bilingual in English and French. The engravings match exactly with the respective explanatory text sheets (numbered 1 to 38), with sheets 5, 18, 32 and 37 corresponding to two engravings each. Of these four engravings, only the engraving on S. 18 is mentioned in the index. Exemplary with rare foxing, but in general, clean and with large margins. Heraldic Ex-libris of the Molineux family (United Kingdom). Magnificent fully red morocco ("crushed morocco") contemporary binding, with two square frames on the covers, one in gold ("filet à l’ancienne") and the other in blind tooling (with fleur-de-lis); simple roll on the squares and on the thickness of the covers; blind and gold tooling decorated spine. Other imperfections: marginal restoration on leaves 25 and 26 (D1 and D2); leaf 46 (F6) with central damage slightly affecting the text; lower margins of last 12 jagged leaves; slight browning and occasional tidal stains. The Convent of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady of Luz, from Montemor-o-Novo, was erected in 1760 next to the Church with the same name, built in 1582, which, in turn, gave its name to the fair held in this location since the 16th century, at the beginning of September: Fair of Luz. In 1878, the Convent was abolished, and the building housed the Holy Spirit Hospital, which is still installed there today. Apparently, the constitutions of the nuns of Louriçal were adopted by those of Montemor-o-Novo without any modification. Volume with slight acidity, but very clean, with the first notebook loose. Nineteenth-century binding, entirely made of sheepskin, with blind tooling decoration on the covers, squares and spine; carmine edges.
