Fronting a substantial weight driven eight-day movement with deadbeat escapement, and Harrison maintaining power striking the quarters on eight rods; original compensated invar rod pendulum and brass cased weights 177cm highConditionIn very nice unrestored original condition, movement is complete but needs cleaning

A MID 18th CENTURY DUTCH BURR WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCK the caddy top surmounted by three gilt finials above an arched blind fret and glazed arched door flanked by turned columns, the trunk door with D- mould edge and brass framed lenticle, canted corners to the trunk running into the base on bun feet. The 12" brass dial with moonphase to the arch above a silvered engraved Roman and Arabic chapter ring surrounded by gilt four season spandrels and wheatear engraved border, the matted centre having subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, days of the week and alarm dial fronting an eight-day five pillar weight driven movement having latched plates Dutch strike and alarm mechanism 260cm to top of finial
HILL ROWLAND: (1795-1879) British Social Reformer, credited with originating the basic concepts of the modern postal service, including the invention of the postage stamp, through his comprehensive reform of the postal system. A.L.S., Rowland Hill, one page, 8vo, London, 21st March 1862, to T. B. Horsfall M.P., on the blind embossed stationery of the Post Office. Hill acknowledges receipt of Horsfall's letter 'of this day's date' and remarks that 'the matter shall at once receive attention'. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hill and signed ('Rowland Hill') by him to the lower left corner. The envelope does not bear a postage stamp but has an 'Official Paid' postmark and bears the printed coat of arms of the General Post Office to the verso. A very light, vertical thin strip of discoloration appears at the centre of the letter, otherwise VG Thomas Berry Horsfall (1805-1878) British Politician, Member of Parliament for Derby 1852 and for Liverpool 1853-65. Lord Mayor of Liverpool 1847-48.
GEORGE I: (1660-1727) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1714-27. A good, bold dark ink signature ('George R') as King, on a slim oblong 8vo piece, evidently removed from the head of a document, with a blind embossed paper seal affixed and several partial lines of manuscript text to the recto and verso, making reference to officers who were to be Court Martialled. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing John Gannon to be a Regimental Quartermaster in the Land Transport Corps. Countersigned at the foot by Fox Maule-Ramsay (1801-1874) 11th Earl of Dalhousie & The Lord Panmure, British Politician, Secretary of State for War 1855-58. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. HISTORICAL: Selection of A.Ls.S. etc., by various British politicians etc., of the 19th century including Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (3; discussing a variety of subjects including potential riots in Manchester and Liverpool and the possible need to swear in additional Special Constables ‘for the protection of the well disposed & the safety & security of the Town’, reporting that ‘I had been informed….that certain handbills of an inflammatory nature had been posted up both in Liverpool & Manchester’, informing his correspondent that the Home Secretary was aware of the situation and further hoping that ‘the prudent precautions already taken may have their full & desired effect & that…..may be sufficient to bring back those misguided men to Peace & Order’ [11th March 1848] and varieties of zoological animals and birds from parts of the African continent [21st September 1849] etc.), Thomas Hamilton, 9th Earl of Haddington, Anthony-Ashley Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury (regarding the decision by the War department to ‘refuse any further consideration of the accounts’ and explaining that he does not see that ‘anything will be gained by a parliamentary movement’, 1856), John Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough (paternal grandfather of Winston Churchill; regarding the question of restrictions imposed on the import of foreign cattle being removed, ‘so far as they relate to Spanish and Portuguese cattle’ and stating that this would incur risk and raise ‘considerable alarm in the public, especially in those parts of the country which have suffered so severely from Cattle Plaque’, 21st March n.y., on the blind embossed stationery of the Privy Council office), Robert Peel (eldest son of the Prime Minister), Edward Cardwell, 1st Viscount Cardwell (2; in one stating ‘I hope the Times will contain a good report of an encounter between Ld. Palmerston & myself today in the House of Commons. He objected to me as member for Liverpool & said my constituents are interested in slave trading & I ought therefore not to be on the Committee….’, 17th May 1848), William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (briefly referring to Joseph Paxton who cultivated the Cavendish banana, the most consumed banana in the Western world, and which was named after the Duke), William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, William Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon etc. The majority of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes (most also signed) and are addressed to Thomas Horsfall. Most of the letters have political content relating to Liverpool (and in some cases Ireland) and some also make reference to other prominent individuals of the time including the Duke of Wellington etc. Generally VG, 21 Thomas Berry Horsfall (1805-1878) British Politician, Member of Parliament for Derby 1852 and for Liverpool 1853-65. Lord Mayor of Liverpool 1847-48.

The clock is also sold with a purchase receipt dated 14th February 1994
