Montanus & U. Neuber, 1551.⁂ Rare and important work with a most distinguished provenance, in excellent condition and in its strictly contemporary binding. The Honeyman copy of the first edition of the collected works by Johann Schöner, mathematician, astronomer, cartographer, and scientific instrument maker from Karlstadt, in Bavaria. Schöner was a contemporary of Nicolaus Copernicus and in 1526 he became the first professor of mathematics at the University of Nuremberg. His most illustrious pupil was Georg Joachim Rheticus, who in the Narratio prima (1540) announced Copernicus' discoveries. Schöner was also active as a printer and even set up a press in his house, printing numerous previously unpublished works by Johannes Regiomontanus, as well as the first printed terrestrial globe to name the recently discovered continent of America. The Opera mathematica was published posthumously by his son Andreas and is introduced by a preface by the outstanding humanist and reformer Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560). The volume contains a representative sample of Schöner's wide and diverse interests, and a digest of some of his separately published works, most of which are extremely rare. Part 3 contains the most important section, which describes and illustrates eleven instruments, under the title Aequatorium Astronomicum, ex quo errantium stellarum motus, luminarium configurationes, & defectus colliguntur, a revised and enlarged version of the work which first appeared in 1521. The Aequatorium Astronomicum contains the earliest collection of printed equatoria-diagrams, as well as a catalogue of stars adapted by Schöner from that published by Copernicus in his De revolutionibus of 1543. The text is illustrated by an elaborate series of volvelles (movable wheel charts) used to determine planetary positions. Each part of these volvelles was printed on a separate page, such that the reader could cut them out or trace them on separate pieces of paper, and then assemble the various parts with string. These fragile 'paper instruments', which Schöner was among the first to employ, are frequently lacking or only partially present in most other copies of this work, and they are very often constructed incorrectly. This copy is exceptionally complete and includes all the volvelles, some still with their original thread. Rogers (Bruce).- Bible, English.- Holy Bible (The) containing the Old and New Testaments, one volume edition [one of 1000 copies], designed by Bruce Rogers and printed in modified Centaur type under his supervision, printed in double column, contemporary black morocco, by Rivière & Son, upper cover with eagle in blind atop a sphere surmounted by a large cross in gilt, triple fillet border in blind, spine titled in gilt and with four raised bands, g.e., very slight rubbing to edges, [Herbert 2249], folio, Oxford, printed at the University Press [by John Johnson], 1935.⁂ Several copies of the Bible appear to have been bound in this manner.

Narrative of a Voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait, to co-operate with the Polar Expeditions, 2 vol., second edition, half-titles, 3 engraved maps (2 folding and one double-page), 23 plates (most engraved, some aquatint, 4 double-page lithographs of bones and a beehive), folding maps torn and repaired, title of vol.1 a little soiled, plates foxed, lithographed plates with water-staining to corner, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpapers, modern calf decorated in gilt and blind, spines gilt with brown and green roan labels, [Hill 93; Sabin 4347], 8vo, 1831.⁂ First octavo edition of "one of the most valuable of modern voyages." (Hill) Beechey explored the Pacific up to and through the Bering Strait with the aim of connecting with the overland and maritime expeditions exploring a possible northwest passage led by Sir John Franklin and William Parry respectively. They did not meet but Franklin came within 146 miles of Beechey. The work includes much information on Eskimos, the Californian coast and the Pacific islands, particularly details on the Bounty mutiny taken from the narrative of John Adams, the last surviving mutineer on Pitcairn Island.

The loosely-inserted Act is "for settling and securing a certain Annuity on William Lord Amherst, and the Representatives of the late Jeffery Lord Amherst, in Consideration of the eminent Services performed by him during his Command in America, 12th August 1803."

A handsomely produced volume. The portrait of the author is a real photograph, laid down opposite t.p., with a printed signature; seven attractive lithographic drawings with tissue guards. Dedicated to the author's two brothers, Charles and Matthew, of Her Majesty's 56th Regiment. The notes make it clear the author was Irish born, raised near Rockview in Tipperary, close to the River Suir. A very rare book. Not found in NLI online catalogue; not in COPAC. (1)

He was born circa 1662 and therefore would have joined the workshop in his mid teens. His will, proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1710, described him as 'a watchmaker of East Greenwich, Kent'. A good early 18th century numbered 8-day burr walnut longcase clockGeorge Graham, London No.588, c.1717The flat-topped hood with blind fret carved frieze set on three-quarter and quarter columns mounted with brass Doric capitals and bases, the long door punch numbered twice to the front edge, veneered with lively figuring and framed by an elaborate moulded edge, over a feather-banded rectangular base, the sides further inlaid with feather banded panels. The 11 inch square brass dial with double screwed Indian mask spandrels interspersed by foliate engraving, the right hand edge set with the maintaining power lever, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with floating lozenge half hour markers, finely matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial, chamfered date aperture (with pin adjustment) and an applied nameplate, 'Geo: Graham, London', with original blued steel hands (the hour hand on a hexagonal boss) secured by four latched dial feet to the substantial weight driven, eight-day movement, the plates united by five heavy knopped pillars riveted to the back and latched to the frontplate, the going train with bolt and shutter maintaining power and anchor escapement with a long steel crutch to a pendulum with circular-section steel rod terminating in a brass bob with engraved rating nut. INCUNABLE - [John MARCHESINUS (late 13th-early 14th-century).  Mammotrectus super Bibliam.] [Colophon:] Expliciut expositiones et correctiones vocabulorum libri qui appellatur Mamotrectus tablie qualiorum plurimorus librorum. Venice: "impensis Francisci de madiis", 1485. 8vo (178 x 118mm). 242 leaves [collated complete], printed in double column, 39-lines to a page, small Gothic type, intials, capitals and decorations hand-painted in red and blue (some leaves mis-bound at the beginning, a few leaves lightly browned, some light mainly marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary panelled vellum decorated in blind over boards, plain spine with 5 raised bands, metal clasp (rubbed and stained). Provenance: copious 15th/16th-century annotation on vellum stubs and leaves at the front and beginning, and in some margins; E. Calvert (later library label on front pastedown); BIBLIOTHECA HEBERIANA (small label on [A1]); 2 old catalogue descriptions [for other copies] laid down on and tipped-onto front pastedown; [continuous] manuscript pagination throughout. First printed in Mainz by Peter Schöffer in 1470, Mammotrectus [with many variants] super Bibliam, a dictionary of words and terms extracted from the Bible and other religious works, was one of the most important scholarly texts of the later Middle Ages. It was criticised by Erasmus and Luther, then satirised by Rabelais in his Gargantua and Pantagruel. BMC V.333; cf. Brunet III, 250 (not citing this edition specifically); Goff M245; GW M20823; Hain 10564.

Woodcut printer's device of a palm tree with serpents and toads at its root on title, Italian text (heavy stain to corner of last few leaves, browned and spotted throughout with a few darker spots). Modern old-style calf decorated in blind, raised bands (extremities rubbed, some splitting and worming to upper joints). Provenance: two modern labels on front pastedown; old initials at foot of title; deleted signatures on verso of final text leaf; old library label at foot of spine. "The Prince" was first published by Anthony Blado in 1532 and was placed on the Index librorum prohibitorum in 1559. It has been suggested that this edition, with its false imprint, was produced for an Italian readership. However, it is just as likely that the publisher John Wolfe, in light of the scandalous nature of the book's contents, was simply trying to keep out of trouble. cf.
