Note: First English edition of Ortelius's Epitome. The first English edition of 1602 is dedicated to Mr. Richard Gargrave, who was knighted by King James in 1603. "These two little books were the earliest world atlases to be published in England and the earliest world atlases with English text" (R.A. Skelton, "Bibliographical Note" in Abraham Ortelius The Theatre of the Whole World. Amsterdam, 1968). Gesner (Conrad). Bibliotheca Universalis, sive Catalogus Omnium Scriptorum Locupletissimus, in Tribus Linguis, Latina, Graeca et Hebraica..., pub. Christophorum Froschouerum, Zurich, 1545, woodcut illust. to title, loss to title imprint and with repairs, leaf * 2 and last few leaves repaired to margins, some worm holes and trails (mostly at rear of volume), some soiling and marks mostly to first & last leaves, recent endpapers, late 18th/early 19th c. blind panelled reversed calf, neatly rebacked, folio. The compilation of bibliographical catalogues of books was attempted by St. Jerome who made lists of Christian writers and their works which were continued by Gennadius. Progress was made in the Middle Ages and in the late 15th c., notably by Johannes Trithemius, Abbot of Spanheim. These writers confined themselves to Christian literature. Gesner, the German-Swiss naturalist and polymath, attempted to describe all the existing books in Latin, Greek and Hebrew (not those in the vernacular) in a set of volumes. These were the earliest systematic 'book about books' to be published and they mark the beginning of modern critical bibliography. PMM 73; Adams G516. (1)
