Australasia.- Australia.- Grey (George) Journals of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-West and Western Australia, during the years 1837, 38, and 39, 2 vol., first edition, 22 lithographed plates, 6 hand-coloured, 2 folding engraved maps in pocket at beginning of vol.1, vol.1 with advertisement leaf at beginning and 16pp. publisher's catalogue at end, vol.2 with 4pp. advertisements for Gould's Birds of Australia at beginning, some light spotting, upper hinge of vol.2 weak, primary binding of original blind-stamped purple cloth, spines gilt with kangaroos at foot, rubbed and faded, especially spines, [Ferguson 3228; Wantrup 131], 8vo, 1841.⁂ The first exploration of the north-west interior during the course of two expeditions fraught with problems: on the first Grey was wounded in an attack and the party had to turn back; in the second they were shipwrecked and had to return overland to Perth, an appalling ordeal during which one man died. Despite this they made many discoveries. The work includes appendices on the mammalia and reptiles of Australia by J.E.Gray, on insects by Adam White, and a list of birds by John Gould.

Ltd: 'NW Quay (Riverside Quay), Tyne Dock' and 'Sutherland Quay, Tyne Dock', 2 volumes, 1939-42; 'London-Yorkshire Motorway, River Trent Bridges', 2 volumes, 1963-4; 'Darlington By-Pass, Bridges', 2 volumes, 1963-4, 'NW Quay, Tyne Dock' and 'Riverside Quay, Tyne Dock' respectively containing 47 and 36 gelatin silver prints (20 x 25.5 cm; image size 15.5 x 21 cm), dated in the negative, blind- and wet stamps of W. Elliott of North Shields, each set loose in photographer's original brown cloth-backed portfolio with pencilled titles to front boards and mild wear to extremities, oblong 4to and 4to; 'London-Yorkshire Motorway, River Trent Bridges' and 'Darling By-Pass Bridges' containing in total approximately 380 gelatin silver prints, 6 colour photographs and 2 printed plans, including some 120 in large format (approximately 21 x 16 cm) of which 3 loosely inserted, 250 in small format (12 x 9 cm), and a few of intermediate size, all corner-mounted rectos and versos to black light card leaves, wet stamps and negative numbers of G. Middleton and Sons (both of Nottingham) on versos, neat manuscript captions throughout in white ink, each work ring-bound in 2 snakeskin-effect black cloth albums (4 in total), a few leaves loose and 4 captioned prints lacking in Trent Bridges volume 2, oblong folio Well-preserved visual record of the expansion of the Tyne Dock during the Second World War by Newcastle engineering firm Brims & Co. Ltd, and of their involvement in the construction of the M1 and upgrading of the A1 at Darlington twenty years later. The four albums relating to these last two projects appear to have been compiled as the company's official record of proceedings. Brims & Co. Ltd was wound up in 1993 but recommenced trading in 2006 as Brims Construction Limited, now based in Sunderland. (4)

A very fine and important early 19th Century Killarney wood arbutus and marquetry Davenport Desk, the shaped raised gallery back decorated with Irish harp, eagle and deer, over a shaped top, the leather inset framed with shamrock design opening to reveal similar decoration, with large harp, and with pigeon holes and drawers, the shaped sides further decorated with shamrock and oval panels of castle ruins, and either side with concealed candle slides, the main body with arched yew-wood panels, the blind hinged door on right opening to reveal five drawers with decorated fronts and concealed pen drawers, and with front circular pillar supports decorated with shamrocks, and similar platform base, 107cms (42") high, 71cms (28") wide. An early 20thC oak sideboard, the canopy top with a blind fretwork held on heavy baluster columns, the subsection set with panelled drawers flanked by inverted panel cupboards and raised quarter columns on barley twist supports with barley twist stretcher, the whole terminating in compressed bun feet, 149cm high, 154cm wide, 56cm deep.
A late 19thC mahogany stained display cabinet, the overhanging moulded top raised above two frieze drawers with blind fret and heavy gilt metal handles, above two panelled doors with intricate scroll and floral mouldings, hinging to reveal a fitted interior, on carved cabriole supports terminating in ball feet joined by an undertier, 107cm high, 125cm wide, 41cm deep. Puplin, 1918, colour and monotone plates, folding map, wrappers bound in, front blank inscribed to Vera Holme, contemporary half sheep, worn, folio, plus 14 volumes from the Representative Women series, some inscribed to Vera Holme and some with her bookplate, plus others similar and a photogravure portrait of Dame Ethel Smyth, signed by Smyth and dated Jan 31, 1925 Vera Holme (1881-1969), was a talented violinist and singer, and member of the Actresses' Franchise League, a group open to all theatre professionals with the aim of promoting women's suffrage through the medium. Holme was also a member of the Women's Social and Political Union and, in 1909, was appointed as Emmeline Pankhurst's chauffeur, despite Sylvia Pankhurst having described Holme as, "... a noisy, explosive young person, frequently rebuked by her elders for lack of dignity." Holme is also believed to have been in a long-standing relationship with Evelina Haverfield, daughter of Lord Arbinger and Commandant in Chief of the Women's Reserve Ambulance Corps during the First World War. Through this link Holme was dispatched to Serbia and appointed to manage horses and trucks in the Scottish Women's Hospital Units. Haverfield died in 1920, and Holme outlived her partner by 49 years and died in Glasgow in 1969. (a carton)

London, for the Company of Stationers, 1604, each with a separate register and title page with woodcut border, respectively collating a10 B8 A8 2B10 C-N8 O10 P8 Q6, A-K8, and A1-4 B4 C-T6 U8, single column, mostly black letter, decorative and historiated initials throughout, first title page and the almanac printed in red and black, numerous lines of music score, 4 contemporary manuscript leaves bound in (1 between Booke of Common Prayer signatures B8 and A1, 3 to the rear), all containing transcriptions of prayers, similar inscription to The Whole Booke signature U4 recto, 2 preliminary leaves possibly lacking, perhaps a blank and an imprimatur (ESTC has a12 for the initial gathering), light browning, first few leaves a little frayed, with small worm-track to lower outer corner, just touching the border of the title, text unaffected, mild ink offsetting to The Whole Booke signatures P6-Q2, contemporary calf, rebacked and relined in the 19th century, boards triple-ruled in gilt and blind, central octofoil tool with strapwork and floral infill between staggered monogram "F M" gilt, rubbed and worn, folio ESTC S2776 for the Booke of Common Prayer and The Psalter or Psalmes of David.
