An 18th Century burr walnut longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the square brass dial with matt centre, silvered subsidiary seconds and date aperture framed by a silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'Henry Massy, London', the hood with moulded pediment above a blind fretwork frieze, Corinthian columns and glazed door, the rectangular trunk door with glazed lenticle and ebonized mouldings, on a crossbanded base and plinth, height approx 220cm, with pendulum and a pair of brass cased weights.

Davin (late 18th/early 19th century) French school, a miniature on ivory depicting "The Happy Awakening" - a Titian haired nude woman in a bed with her clothes being removed by a putto, signed, oval, 8.8cm x 12.8cm; set in a Continental .800 silver frame with leaf tip carved mother-of-pearl border and pierced scrolling surmount centred by love birds on a basket, the reverse with oval inset ivory miniature decorated with a blindfolded Cupid being led by a dog, in blue and white, 5.9cm high, within a tortoiseshell surround; overall 14.5cm high x 15.8cm wide. Illustrated. Footnote: the symbolism of 'sensuality being awoken by love' to the front is juxtaposed by the reverse where love is, in turn, guided by the mind- the blindfold figure of Cupid echoing Shakespeare's verse; "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." The surname Davin is uncommon at this period but is most often associated with the French female artist Césarine Henriette Flore Davin-Mirvault (1773-1844).

An Edwardian mahogany Chippendale revival break-front bookcase, the pediment with dental carving and blind fretwork decoration above four astral glazed bookcase doors opened to reveal adjustable shelves above a base of four panelled cupboard doors with blind fretwork decoration and carved floral sprays, the doors raised on a plinth base, approx 245.5 cm high x 250 cm wide CONDITION REPORTS Back right top edge - loss to the pediment running along half way down the side to the break-front. Loss to the top right-hand edge and loss to the top left-hand corner and to the back left-hand edge. Down the left-hand side there are some losses of veneers and to the jutted out break-front, a deep long scratch to the veneer and some losses to the veneer and impressed marks. There is a crack to the glass on the right-hand side and deep scratch down the right-hand side running approx 2" long. Damage to the moulding on the top of the base on the right-hand side and loss to the left-hand side of the break-front. Base's top edge with various deep scratches and scuffs, chips etc. All over various scratches,scuffs, chips and marks. all over general signs of wear and tear. Some more losses of veneer to the base all over

FRENCH REVOLUTION: A good multiple signed document, one page, folio, Paris, 5th March 1795, to Margueritte Françoise Le Sueur, in French. The partially printed document being the minutes of a National Convention decree. Signed at the base, 31st March 1795, by Révellière-Lépeaux, Balmain and Vicquy, in their capacity as `Representantives of the population and secretaries of the National Convention´. The National Convention created during the French Revolution approves a widow´s military pension in favour of Margueritte Le Sueur, widow of Jean Baptiste Bouteleux `dying the 26th July 1793, after two months and fourteen days serving, in the sum of three hundred and twenty pounds.´ The document bears at the bottom a paper seal affixed in very good condition, showing a National Convention blind embossed seal. Fine and rare English walnut eight day longcase clock with solar equation and five pillar movement, the 12" brass arched dial signed Josephus Williamson, Londini.Inv fecet on pierced shaped foliate engraved plates to the matted centre, also inscribed on a separate silvered oval plate 'Horce indicantur apparentes invo lutis equationibus', also with a subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture enclosed with a silvered chapter ring, the arch fitted with the solar equation dial inscribed with days of the month and months of the year chapter rings enclosing a matted centre fitted with a blued steel hand and ormolu sunburst pointer, the figured walnut case of good colour, fitted with a long feather banded beaded door and the hood surmounted by a flat stepped moulded cornice over a blind foliate fretwork carved panel, 100" high (pendulum, two brass cased weights and crank winding key) *A very similar clock was sold at the Sotheby's -'Masterpieces from the Time Museum' Auction held in New York on 13th October 2004 (see lot 536) There have been several erudite articles written about this maker and solar equation clocks, by leading horologists including Derek Roberts and Tom Robinson Little seems to have been recorded about the early life of Joseph Williamson, but it is thought that he was apprenticed in 1683. He appears to have worked for Daniel Quare, but did not enter the Clockmakers' Company until later when he set up in business on his own account. He was Junior Warden in 1721 and became Master in 1724, but died in office in June 1725. His surviving clocks demonstrate that he must have been a gifted mathematician with a good knowledge of astronomy. He was appointed watchmaker to King Charles II of Spain. This clock shows solar time in accordance with that indicated by a sundial and not Greenwich Mean Time as it is known today. The Latin inscription on the dial translates approximately to mean that the clock shows apparent (sundial) time by means of complicated equation work. This feat is achieved by the use of a cam which controls the effective length of the pendulum throughout the year. Joseph Williamson claimed to have invented this device in a letter which was published in Philosophical Transactions towards the end of 1719. Some of Daniel Quare's longcase clocks incorporate this feature and it is thought that Williamson made this part of the clock for him
