A good 18th century mahogany eight day long case clock, the brass dial signed J.N.O. Pitts, Tilbury, beneath an ornate, cherub, arch, the case with blind fret, canted corners beneath a fret pierced and flowerhead carved pediment, the whole on ogee bracket feet, maximum height 244cm. Condition Report: We do not operate the clocks to see if in working order and do not guarantee the workings. There are three holes drilled into the brass dial where the movement posts are connected therefore uncertain if the movement is original. The seating boards are built up. The edge of the trunk door has some damage together with the back legs missing.

The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Basil Beridge to be a Captain in the 21st Regiment of Dragoons, or Royal Forresters, commanded by John Manners, Marquess of Granby. Countersigned at the foot by William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. British Statesman, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1756-57, 1757-61 and British Prime Minister 1766-68. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light dust staining and creasing to the corners and edges, only very slightly affecting the signatures, about VG King George III had acceded to the throne on 25th October 1760, just two days before signing the present document.

The manuscript document, on black bordered mourning paper, is addressed to Councillor Edward George Fitzalan Howard, Deputy to the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal and Hereditary Marshal of England, and is a Licence for Allan Cowburn, Vicar of Tidenham in Gloucestershire to take the surnames of Smith and Masters and the Arms of Masters and Smith quarterly, and extensively detailing the events leading to Cowburn's petition for the same to the Queen, further instructing Howard that 'our Concession and Declaration be recorded in Our College of Arms to the end that Our Officers of Arms and all others upon occasion may take full notice and have knowledge thereof.' Countersigned at the conclusion by Sir George Grey (1799-1882) British Politician, Home Secretary 1846-52, 1855-58. With blind embossed paper seal affixed and tied to the left edge with the original black ribbon. Accompanied by the original envelope. Some light overall age wear and staining and some extensive, although neat, splits to the right edges of the folds to each page, only very slightly affecting the text, but not the signatures. G

GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. D.S., Appd. G. R. I., as King, at the head, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 11th June 1921, on the blind embossed stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury. The typed document is a dictated letter to the King from Austen Chamberlain at the request of the Prime Minister and recommends that a Knighthood be conferred upon George Branson on the occasion of his appointment to be a judge of the High Court of Justice. Signed by Austen Chamberlain at the foot. One file hole in the upper corner and very light, minor age wear. Together with Queen Mary(1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. Book signed and inscribed, a hardback edition of Great Flights by C. St. John Sprigg, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd., January 1936 (reprinted). A presentation copy inscribed in bold, dark fountain pen ink by Queen Mary to the front free endpaper, 'For Jamie Douglas from Mary R' and dated Christmas 1940 in her hand. Some light foxing and some slight damp staining to the head of a few pages and cloth boards. Lacking the dust jacket. Rare D.S., Edward R I, as King, at the head, two pages, folio, Court at Saint James's, 15th June 1936. The typed document is addressed to Cosmo Gordon Lang, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, and is a mandate for the Consecration of the Reverend James Lawrence Cecil Horstead to be a Bishop, 'to the intent that he should exercise his functions in one of Our Possessions and also in one of Our Protectorates abroad'. With blind embossed paper seal affixed at the head along with the original black ribbon. A portion of the second page to the integral leaf has been neatly cut away, evidently for the removal of the countersignature. Some very minor, extremely light staining to the left edge, about VG William Cosmo Gordon Lang (1864-1945) Scottish Anglican Prelate who served as Archbishop of York (1908-28) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1928-42). The Most Rev. James Horstead (1898-1989) Anglican Bishop of Sierra Leone (1936-61) and Archbishop of West Africa (1955-61).

The typed document is addressed to the Lord Bishop of London and states that, following an Act passed in the seventh year of the reign of Queen Victoria entitled An Act to make better Provision for the Spiritual Care of populous Parishes, 'a Parish for Spiritual Purposes was constituted out of the Parish of Hanwell in the County of Middlesex…and is called the Parish of Saint Thomas, Hanwell', and further nominating Cecil Alfred Osborne to be Perpetual Curate of the Parish of Saint Thomas made vacant by the death of Herbert James Beck. With blind embossed blue paper seal and original blue ribbon affixed. About VG William Wand (1885-1977) English Anglican Bishop of London 1945-55.

Pound thanks his correspondent for their letter and suggestions, remarking 'We have been thinking very much along these lines. Anyway, we are always very glad to receive any suggestions.' NUREMBURG TRIALS: A rare 'Short Snorter' United States of America One Dollar banknote individually signed by seven of the defendants at the Nuremberg Trials comprising Hermann Goering (1893-1946, Reichsmarschall and Commander of the Luftwaffe 1935-45), Wilhelm Keitel (1882-1946, German Field Marshal, head of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), Alfred Jodl (1890-1946, Wehrmacht Generaloberst, deputy to Keitel), Wilhelm Frick (1877-1946, Reich Minister of the Interior 1933-43), Fritz Sauckel (1894-1946, Gauleiter of Thuringia 1927-45), Konstantin von Neurath (1873-1956, Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs 1932-38) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (1893-1946, Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs 1938-45). All have signed their names in fountain pen inks, some adding the date in their hands. A couple of the signatures are very weak and barely legible. Some small ink annotations in the hand of the collector. Some light overall creasing and age wear, G Provenance: Accompanied by a typed certificate signed by Dan J. Hardy, a Notary Public of West Virginia, stating, in part, 'that the signatures listed below and appearing on the 1935A Silver Certificate, Serial No. Y 59385846 C, are authentic and were obtained by me while I was a guard in the courtroom of the War Criminal Trials, Palace of Justice, Nuremberg, Germany. Orders came down to collect signatures no more, and this prevented me from getting all of them. The signatures were obtained in the cell block before we took the prisoners to the courtroom each morning'. Countersigned by Louise Lowther, Notary Public of Harrison County, West Virginia, and bearing her blind embossed stamp. Also included is a holograph copy of the same statement signed by Dan Hardy alongside his blind embossed Notary Public stamp and dated 20th April 1966. Some overall creasing, light staining, age wear and small areas of paper loss to the statement.
