ADVENTV-I AVG IV]DAEAE, S C in exergue, emperor standing right, extending hand towards Judaea standing left, holding patera in and cup; at her feet, two children before her, one behind, each holding a palm branch; between the emperor and Judaea, a lit altar. Cf. Hendin 1606 (only two children on reverse); RIC 893; cf. BMC 1661. Extremely Rare. Light brown patina. Very Fine. From the S. Moussaieff Collection, This lot has been officially exported from Israel through the Israel Antiquities Authority. This copper as of Hadrian belongs to that emperor's popular "travel series" which commemorated his visits to various provinces throughout the Empire, including Hispania, Macedonia, and Egypt among others. This particular issue celebrates a visit to Judaea. On the reverse, the togate emperor greets the female personification of Judaea, who offers a sacrifice in his honor and is surrounded by three children holding palm branches. The amicable relationship between Hadrian and Judaea expressed by the type belies the deep crisis that unfolded in the province under Hadrian.In AD 130, Hadrian passed through Judaea on his way to Egypt. During this trip he saw the ruins of Jerusalem left from the destruction of the city by Titus in AD 70 and vowed to rebuild it as the capital of the province. As a philhellene and respecter of antiquity, Hadrian was generally concerned with the upkeep of the old cities of the Empire. Unfortunately, he decided not to restore the city as a Jewish religious center, but rather as a pagan capital dedicated to the cult of Jupiter Capitolinus and renamed as Aelia Capitolina. It is not entirely clear whether this refoundation was really intended by Hadrian as an affront to Jewish sensibilities or rather as a misguided attempt to bring Judaea into the Hellenic cultural oikeumene that the emperor was constructing throughout the Greek East. The Seleukid king Antiochos IV Epiphanes (175-164 BC) had courted disaster with similar attempts to Hellenize Jerusalem and Judaea and centuries later, Hadrian had not learned from the mistake. Just as Antiochos' attempts at Hellenization had sparked the Maccabean Revolt against Seleukid rule, Hadrian's refoundation of Jerusalem horrified the remaining Jewish inhabitants of Judaea and sparked the armed uprising known as the Bar Kokhba War (AD 132-135). Rebels under the leadership of the messianic figure, Simon bar Kokhba, fought a bloody guerilla war and inflicted severe losses on the Roman legions before they were finally crushed. Enraged by the revolt and its high cost in men and money, Hadrian took steps to eradicate Jewish nationalism by burning sacred texts, forbidding the use of Torah law or the Hebrew calendar, and changing the name of the province from Judaea to Syria Palaestina. Although sometimes associated with a supposed imperial visit after the conflict, the happy reverse type and the use of the name Judaea on this travel issue strongly suggests production in AD 130 and the period before the outbreak of the Bar Kokhba War. The personification of Judaea offering a sacrifice over a pagan altar (an image that would have been offensive to many Jews of the period) underlines the kind of cultural insensitivity that incited the conflict in the first place. Although Hadrian was himself a great lover of Hellenism, he was very much blind to the fact that it was not something for everyone and that its imposition would not always result in the joyous reception depicted on the reverse of this coin.

Miller, New Bond Street, 1803 [but vide infra]. 4to, full straight-grain morocco, boards with gilt foliate borders enclosing blind foliate borders, spine gilt in compartments, lettered directly in two, rest with elaborate gilt panel, gilt-lined board edges, gilt roll-tooled turn-ins, a.e.g.; 73 hand-coloured stipple-engraved plates by J. Dadley. Later issue, preface watermarked 1815, main text 1811, and plates 18[?2]9. Printed in French and English. An ethnographic study drawing on Johann Gottlieb Georgi, strikingly illustrated after his work. The work aimed to show the incredible variation in climates, peoples and customs across the whole of the Russian Empire. To do this it drew on the 'most authentic sources' such as Prof. Muller's Description de toutes les Nations de l'Empire de Russie, Pallas' Travels through the Southern Parts of Russia, and others. A beautifully illustrated and informative work. together with a scrapbook of tourist scenes etc with the opening 10 leaves showing hand-drawn and coloured illustrations of Napolitano hand-lettered in Italian possibly after originals from a series of similar engraved and coloured images interleafed.Binding a little scuffed and rubbed, some, variable, marginal spotting of plates, not generally affecting images, occasional marking and foxing to text but a very good copy of an important book.

Beke, Charles The Late Dr Charles Beke's Discoveries of Sinai in Arabia and of Midian. Trubner & Co., 1878. 4to, org. red pebbled cloth, upper board with dual-ruled gilt-fillets enclosing central gilt block, lower board with fillets in blind, spine lettered in gilt, a.e.g.; pp. xviii, [2], 606; port. frontis., 13 wood-engr. plates, 2 geological sections,1 folding map at rear; provenance: Peter Dowding Prankerd (Bristol-born land developer and mine operator in Australia, bought The Knoll, Sneyd Park on his 1872 return; armorial bookplate to upper pastedown). First edition. Beke undertook his three month journey in 1874 at the age of 73 to locate Mount Sinai (which he believed was in Saudi Arabia). He died the same year after returning to announce the discovery of the capital of Midian. His book was completed by his wife Emily, edited from his letters. Spine a touch dulled with rubbing at head and foot, lower board detached from text block but still attached to spine, variable foxing, a good copy of a major work.

Folio, contemporary Cambridge-style calf, sometime rebacked retaining original spine, spine with morocco lettering-piece, blind-rolled board edges, marbled endpapers, red speckled edges; pp. [16 (half-title, verso blank, title, verso blank, Epistola (4), Praefatio (7), blank)], 823, [14 (Index (13), blank)]; eng. frontis. and 2 eng. plates by Michael van der Gucht, folding map; provenance: this copy was gifted to Ely Cathedral library by John Nichols MA of Trinity College Cambridge, 1730 (gift inscription half-title and title, library bookplate on upper pastedown, occasional mss marginalia), Ely Cathedral library was sold in 1972. The Venerable Bede was the most important English historian of the Middle Ages. His History is perhaps the most important primary source on the Anglo-Saxon period, as well as a critical text in the development of an English national identity through literature. The earliest printed edition was produced in Germany in 1475, with various editions after that. The editor of this edition was John Smith, Prebendary of Durham Cathedral and Rector of Wearmouth - the site of Bede's monastery. It appears that, like many Anglican clergy of the time, his duties were not so onerous as to prevent the pursuit of academia, in this case a magisterial new edition of the text. Prior to this edition, all printed versions of Bede had drawn on a specific family of manuscripts, known as the C-texts. This edition was able to use the Moore MS (one of the earliest extant versions), as well as two copies in the Cotton Library, which greatly improved the quality of the text. Earlier additions had accumulated many errors, which Smith intended to remove by comparison to the earlier versions. Early on in his work, he realised that the wide variety would swamp his version with variants. As such he employed a strict priority, slicing away later material to find a critical text within. The Smiths' passage on methodology contains a vital maxim for manuscript study - remove readings only found in later passages, restore those from the oldest. Smith also included King Alfred's Saxon paraphrase of the text (in a new type, cut specially for the work), a map of Saxon Britain, and printings of a series of Anglo-Saxon charters from Mercia, manuscripts of which no longer exist. The elder Smith worked continually on the text but did not live to see its completion, handled by his son George. Between them they created a version of the text so rigorous that textual criticism of Bede barely altered until Plummer's 1896 edition. David Douglas (English Scholars) describes it as ''perhaps the most perfect single book of the greatest age of Anglo-Saxon historical learning.''Binding slightly scuffed and rubbed, variable lower marginal staining P1-Q1, short marginal tear 3B1 not affecting text, short inner margin tear to folding map affecting image, 7P1 short upper marginal tear affecting text, some slight marking and foxing internally but otherwise clean. KELLER HELEN: (1880-1968) American Author, Activist & Lecturer. T.L.S., Helen Keller, in bold pencil, two pages, slim 4to, Forest Hills, 31st December 1943, to Betsy. Keller commences her letter by stating 'Your flowers came like a lovely presence to our Christmas party. As Polly brought them into the holly-wreathed dining-room, where we were entertaining a few guests at dinner, it seemed as if you entered and wished us all a “Merry Christmas!” It was like the lighting of another bright candle, the singing of another happy carol', and continues to remark 'I laid my cheek softly against the roses…..A feeling of tenderness welled up in my heart, and happy tears came into my eyes. I cannot thank you as deeply as I feel for your goodness to me, but I can do better - I can love you, and wish you a New Year full of bright days and sweet satisfactions.' Keller further writes of the happy Christmas she and Polly experienced, describing their evergreen tree as 'a miracle of glistening red, gold, silver, blue and emerald…..it was aquiver with life. For we caused to alight upon it birds, fishes, little jumping green frogs, all manner of tiny dolls, deer and elephants, and some fantastic creatures that were neither fish, fowl or beast' and adding 'I wish you could have sat with us round the fire, and felt for a few hours the true peace and gladness which we believe will some day fill the whole world'. The attractively printed form letter sends thanks for the recipient’s kind Christmas greetings and good wishes for 1938 and Himmler reciprocates by sending his own good wishes for their work and family and concludes by expressing his hope that the New Year will bring only blessings for the Fuhrer and Germany. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Together with Karl Wolff (1900-1984) German SS-Obergruppenfuhrer, Chief of Personal Staff Reichsfuhrer-SS (Heinrich Himmler) 1936-43. L.S., Wolff, with holograph subscription, one page, oblong 8vo, Berlin, December 1938, [to Trude Mohr], in German. The printed form letter bears a brief greeting sending good wishes for the Yule and a successful New Year. VG, 2   Provenance: The present cards was previously part of the official papers retained by Trude Mohr (1902-1989) German Member of the NSDAP, the first Reichsreferentin of the Bund Deutscher Madel (BDM - The League of German Girls), appointed in June 1934 after her female arm of the Hitler Youth, based in the Brandenburg district of Germany, had grown to become the second largest group in the country under her leadership.
