General Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872), was a major influence on the expansion of the British Empire in the 19th century. In 1829 he made a tour of inspection in Egypt and Syria during the course of which he was able to prove that from an engineering point of view, and contrary to the conclusions reached earlier by Napoleon's surveyors, the construction of a Suez Canal was perfectly feasible. It was on the strength of Chesney's Report that Dr. Lesseps later built the canal and it was Lesseps himself who styled Chesney the 'Father of the Suez Canal', in 1869. (3)
