A portable leather-bound prayer book of circa 300 folios bearing ten lines of cursive maghribi script per page in sepia ink, key words highlighted in blue and red ink, a number of folios featuring polychrome illumination and magic squares inscribed with magic numbers; endpapers with manuscript annotations; blind stamped and tooled decorative binding comprising an intricate border and central floral panel with folding closure. 213 grams, 11.2cm (4 1/4"). Ex central London gallery; formerly with Bloomsbury Auctions, 9 July 2009, lot 30; accompanied by a collector's catalogue information page. A portable prayer book suitable for use as a pilgrim's travelling accessory for a journey to Mecca to perform hajj. The magic squares suggest an additional amuletic function, warding off evil. The style and execution of the binding, script and illuminated pages suggest a North African origin. [No Reserve] Text block sound and clean, endpapers worn; binding good with slight separation at hinges.

The nine consecutive full-page polychrome devotional illuminations at the back continue the series by representing the Holy Trinity surrounded by the four Cherubims, Saint Raphael, Saint Gabriel and the three Holy Children in the fiery furnace, Saint Michael and the heavenly host, again Saint George killing the dragon, Gabra Manfas Qeddus, A saint, Saint Samuel of Waldebba horsing a lion, a pair of saints. Other two pages with miniatures inside the book represent Joshua and the Archangel Michael, and Takla Heymanot. [No Reserve] Text darkened at edges; binding with broken board detached.

A bound book composed of paper leaves populated with two skoropis hands in black/brown ink; several pages at ends professionally reinforced with paper and tissue with some small loss of text; bound in leather over wooden boards, blind-tooled in panels with geometric and other motifs with remains of two clasps, hinges reinforced in fabric; Amsterdam mark within initials similar to Dianova no. 995, dated 1655; content comprising two independent miscellanies: one collection consisting of homilies and sermons with eschatological and popular content identified as 'from the Book of the Righteous Messiah and of the Antichrist', a story relating to the miraculous appearance of the BVM in the city of Smolensk and to Saint Mercurious, a Sermon about Saints Kirikus and Ulitus, the exemplar of the Court and the Dragon, Sermons by Palladius the Monk and by Cyril of Alexandria, Hippolytus 'Pope' of Rome, Sermon for Shrovetide, and an incomplete item concerning the Antichrist; the second collection drawn mainly from the 'Zlatoust', the traditional Slavonic anthology of Sermons and Homilies ascribed to John Chrysostom, also including Sermons on the Second Coming of Christ, and from the Easter cycle. 1.1 kg, 22cm (8 3/4"). Original antique advertising poster for Salon des Cent, a commercial art exhibition based at 31 Rue Bonaparte in Paris. The beautiful art nouveau design shows a lady in a broad rimmed black hat, black cloak and fur mantle holding a white flower at a green table, with patterned green wallpaper behind her. The Salon des cent was known for selling posters and reproductions of artwork at accessible prices. Theoretically Le Salon des Cent was a group of 100 exhibiting artists, although the group varied over the years. The exhibition posters have had a considerable influence on the development of the Art Nouveau poster. Fair condition, staining, tears, paper losses, blind embossing. An 18th century oak longcase clock, Samuel Roberts of Llanfair Caereinion, the hood with dentil cornice above a blind fretwork frieze, the trunk with shaped and cross-banded door between fluted quarter-column pilasters, the base box with cross-banded panel front, the brass dial signed 'Sam; Roberts Llan-vair', with Roman numerals to the chapter ring and Arabic numerals to the minute track, a calendar aperture inscribed '365' below, the 30-hour movement striking on a bell, with pendulum and weight, 52cm wide x 193cm high.Footnote: Footnote: Samuel Roberts is a well documented clock maker of Llanfair Caereinion in the Montgomeryshire region, now Powys, active between 1750 and the 1780s. Records indicate that he crafted some six hundred pieces, roughly twenty per year, earning him an average of £35 per year. To serve the local community, Roberts established a 'clock club' with customers paying by installments and entering a lottery for each clock as it was completed.Condition report: Hood: several dentils missing from cornice. Losses to blind fretwork frieze moulding. Fine splits to sides. General cosmetic signs of age. Dial: Fair, with minor. Signs of age. Size 12" (300mm).Movement: possible later elements. Strike is one hour ahead of hand position. Does run for around 30 seconds so needs setting up properly and will benefit from a service to re-commission.Case: Small loss to cross banding on door. Door hinges a little loose. Dints to base box moulding. Split across base box front panel. Possibly lacking plinth foot. General cosmetic marks consistent with age and use.

Lot 423

A George III mahogany chest on chest, the upper section with ogee and dentil cornice above a blind fretwork frieze and two short over five long cock-beaded drawers, the base with two long cock-beaded drawers, raised on ogee feet, 111cm wide x 54.5cm deep x 149cm high.Condition report: Splits to the top with some lifting at one end. Minor splits to the sides in the upper section. All handles replaced. Loss and repair to base recess beading on the left side. Losses to cock beading to the side edge of two drawers. Small veneer losses in places. General wear and cosmetic marks throughout consistent with age and use.  Locks probably original but in any case contemporaneous and working (with a single key supplied).

A Victorian mahogany mirror back display cabinet, the raised back with a rectangular mirrored plate, flanked by blind fret panels, the stepped base with a bow fronted centre section, flanked by an arrangement of two drawers and two glazed doors, above a recess, on carved cabriole legs, with shaped under tier, 122cm wide.
