The accompanying texts bound with the Bible are also complete. A good, clean copy.

"Mrs Scott was an industrious if dull writer. In her own day she was described as an 'excellent historian, of great acquirements, extraordinary memory and strong sense'" - DNB.

Braddon (Mary Elizabeth) Lady Audley's Secret, vol.1 first edition, vol.2 & 3 fourth edition, half-titles, occasional light finger-soiling, the odd spot, vol.3 with one gathering becoming loose, 4pp. advertisements at end of vol.2 & 3, bookplate of Thomas Lalor, Gregg to pastedowns, original blind-stamped cloth, spines gilt, spines darkened, spine ends and corners a little bumped, covers rubbed and a little marked, [Sadleir 302; Wolff 660c], 8vo, Tinsley Bros., 1862.⁂ Rare partial first edition of one of the great sensation novels. The majority of early sets are mixed editions with first editions of any of the volumes especially rare. Wolff had no edition earlier than the fifth, and Sadleir had the first edition of vol.3 only, listing the fourth edition as 'Not located'. Braddon's tale of bigamy, murder and duplicity was an enormous success, allowing the author financial independence for the remainder of her life and launching William Tinsley as a major publisher.

Steele and also Kitty O'Shea, famous for her affair with Charles Stewart Parnell, leading to his political downfall.

Local Interest - Pinxton, The Reverend D'Ewes Coke (1747 - 1811), Wake (William, D.D.), The Principles of the Christian Religion Explained [...], Printed for J.G. & F. Rivington, London 1832, contemporary calf boards (perished spine), upper-cover blind blocked within a laureate garland: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, printed book label to pastedown: Pinxton, Whit-Sunday, 1837 [...] This Book was given under the Will of the late Rev. D'Ewes Coke, Rector of Pinxton, [Derbyshire], 12mo The Reverend Coke, a scion of an illustrious Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire family, entered the Church of England after Cambridge and married Hannah (née Heywood) of Brimington Hall, near Chesterfield. The couple, along with their cousin Daniel Coke of Trusley, were painted by Joseph Wright of Derby in 1782 in one of the artist's most well-known conversation pieces. Their third son John Coke was instrumental in the founding of the Pinxton China Factory with William Billingsley. The Reverend Coke died in 1811 and in his will established an educational charity at Pinxton, leaving five pounds a year from the profits of his collieries to buy books for poor children who generally attended an unendowed school of which this is lot is an example of.

A very interesting A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Saturday, to a woman [Jeanne Destourbet], in French. Sainte Beuve starts his letter stating `My dear and kind friend, I was feeling bad yesterday, and to my great regret had to leave suddenly although didn´t want to. Pasha Halil Bey had invited me for dinner next Saturday together with you..´ further sending intimate compliments to his correspondent `Yesterday your beauty was enhanced and superb. I can see that you have more than one kind of beauty, it´s as per your wish, depending on the day, on your whims, I like both. I even like the third, when you wear your robe de chamber, your hair half-combed..´ A letter of good association. With integral blank leaf. Together with A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Friday, to a Monsieur de Lavergne, in French. Sainte Beuve politely rejects his correspondent´s dinner invitation, stating in part `I am just returning from my library, (today was my day) so tired and exhausted that I cannot accept the pleasure of having dinner with you. I will think about it with sadness on my bed where I will spend the rest of the evening…´ With a blind embossed seal from Bath to the upper left corner. Bearing to the verso the correspondent´s name and address in Sainte-Beuve´s hand. Very small folding, otherwise VG £100-150 Jeanne Tourbey (1837- ?) Also known as Jeanne Destourbet was a very famous courtesan of her time. Prince Jerome Napoleon offered her a large house in Paris where she used to receive a long list of lovers including Alexandre Dumas, Téophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, Sainte-Beuve, and Pasha Halil Serif who spent several millions in presents and looking after her. Pasha Halil Serif (1831-1879) Also known as Halil Bey, Ottoman diplomat and art collector. Appointed commissioner to the International Exhibition in Paris in 1855, and later Ottoman Ambassador to Athens and Saint Petersburg where he began collecting art. Téophile Gautier described Pasha´s collection as "The first ever to be formed by a child of Islam". Pasha Halil serif was introduced to Gustave Courbet by Sainte-Beuve, and commissioned Le Sommeil ("The Sleepers") and L´origine du monde from him. His collection included several Delacroix masterpieces.

Dumas thanks his correspondent for his fair critics which prove he has fully read and understood his thoughts and states in part `In my mind of son of a romantic are still hanging remnants of a former language. I get rid of it as much as I can, but may be due to a filial respect I cannot do so abruptly. And then there is a meeting shock between too old words and too young words, of a form which disappear and a form which starts.´ One of the double 8vo pages bears a blind embossed monogramme to the heading with the initials “N.D”, the other bears the initials “A.D”. STANISLAW II: (1732-1798) Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1764-95. Lover of Catherine the Great, he was a great patron of the arts, but still remains a controversial figure in Polish history. An excellent L.S., `Stanislaus Augustus Rex´, beneath a holograph in his hand `Bonus Frater et Cognatus´, one page, folio, Warsaw, 20th September 1788, to King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, at the time of the present letter King of Naples and Sicily, in Latin. Stanislaw II refers to the letter received from King Ferdinand and congratulates him for the new born Prince Carlo Gennaro. Prince Carlo would die of Smallpox only few months later. With blank address leaf, bearing a very large and attractive blind embossed royal paper seal, stating “Stanislaus Augustus D.G.Rex Poloniae M.Dux Lith. Rus. Prus. Mas…”. Folded, with very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £600-900 Ferdinand I (1751-1825) King of the Two Sicilies 1816-25, after his restoration following victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Before that he had been, since 1759 Ferdinand III of the Kingdom of Sicily and Ferdinand IV of Naples.

SLAVERY ABOLITION: Carlos Manuel Cespedes del Castillo (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. Known as the “Father of the Motherland”, Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. An excellent and very attractive multiple signed printed large document, one page, 14 x 16.5, Bayamo, 27th December 1868, in Spanish. The document being a decree is entitled “Slavery Conditioned Abolition - Carlos Manuel de Cespedes - Captain-General of the Liberator Army of Cuba and Leader of the Provisional Government”, and bears a very attractive and large vignette to the heading. The decree contains nine articles, and starts stating `The Cuban Revolution, proclaiming the independence of the Homeland and with it all freedoms, cannot accept the inconsistency of restricting it to only one part of the country´s population. A free Cuba is incompatible with a proslavery Cuba..´ further saying in its first article `All slaves are declared free..´. Boldly signed by Cespedes at the base of the document. With few additional countersignatures to the borders. Bearing a large black paper seal of the Liberator Cuban Army to the front and in excellent condition, and a blind embossed seal to the bottom right corner. Small overall age wear, with edges very slightly trimmed and a small fold repair to the verso, otherwise G £250-350

Cespedes states `On this date, and in my capacity as representative of the Provisional Government, I have granted freedom to the negro named Nemesio, 16 years old…´ The document bears to the front a large blind embossed seal and to the lower left corner an ink stamp of the “free town council of Bayamo”. The Emperor sends a warm and kind letter to Countess Orlov, referring to her husband and friend of him, stating in part `Please allow me Madame to apologize for being the cause of the quite often separations you and your husband suffer… Nevertheless, if it helps in any way to comfort you, I would say that all these difficult tasks entrusted to your husband make him prove his tireless zeal and his talents…on this precise occasion he is rending a service to me and to the Homeland, and he is doing so Madame in an admirable way. However we will still have to wait few more days before everything will be concluded. Please forgive me if I am always a permanent problem for you two...´ The emperor adds an interesting post-scriptum announcing `..I have just had the pleasure to watch my wife giving luckily birth to a son Nicolas.´ The document bears a blind embossed seal to the upper left corner. One small tear not affecting the signature, otherwise VG £800-1200Alexei Feodorovich Orlov (1787-1862) Russian Diplomat and Count. One of the most trusted agents of Nicholas I as Ambassador and plenipotentiary at the Adrianople and Paris Peace treaties. He would later be appointed by the Emperor head of the infamous Third Section, the Russian secret police.Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1831-1891) Grand Duke of Russia, third son of Nicholas I.
