Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Southeastern Pocket Gopher" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked May 23, 1984. In a deep underground nest, the mother Pocket Gopher gives birth to a litter of one to four tiny babies in the Spring. Born naked, blind and toothless, these little brown creatures are native to the Southeastern United States. About a month after birth, the babies' eyes open and soon the youngsters will be ready to leave the nest. Solitary in their lifestyle, Pocket Gophers are notorious for loud arguments amongst themselves, for grouchy dispositions, and for their preference for darkness and deep underground chambers. Burrowing through some two or three hundred feet of dirt in a night, they may pull plants down with them, storing the food in special fur-lined pouches in their cheeks. Hence, the name "Pocket Gopher." Each Gopher in the litter will eventually dig his own burrow and, in areas where food is plentiful, large populations will accumulate, often causing widespread damage to crops. In these situations, the animal is detested by man. Gophers have also been accused of causing erosion of the soil by their incessant burrowing habits. On the other hand, the Gopher has been known to readily make friends with man, sometimes visiting campsites and rural homes searching for food and friendship. The Pocket Gopher's humorous "buck" teeth and a "begging" posture have captured the hearts of many people. But generally, these nocturnal creatures prefer to build their dark underground homes away from prying people, intruding civilization, and other animals. Image Size: 11.25 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 20 in. Unframed. (B08747)

Lot 338

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Canada Lynx" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked December 18, 1984. Stalking the deep pine forests of New Jersey, the female Canada Lynx searches for a den or shallow cave in which to bear her kittens. Glistening yellow cat's eyes peer through the night as the bright moonlight reflects an occasional glimpse of the thin spotted spring coat recently acquired. Finding her cover, this solitary creature slinks silently into a cave and her playful, furry kittens are born. Blind as yet, the two to four babies depend solely on their mother for survival in the wild. It is interesting to note however, that the tom cat, who has long since left his mate in the wilderness will, if held captive -- as in a zoo -- show fatherly tenderness toward his young, playing with them and even helping with their grooming. But all this is taken over by the mother Lynx in the natural cycle of events. She will nurse her brood for two months and teach them necessary tricks of survival for seven more. Meanwhile, these tiny kittens, who begin life in much the same way as the litter of a house cat, will develop -- slowly -- into magnificent wild felines. Once their eyes open -- at about ten days -- they are among the keenest eyes in the forest. The sense of smell is just as strong, and the slightest scent may be followed relentlessly for miles. The adult Lynx travels alone and may climb trees, swim, or use broad paws like snowshoes to trudge across winter's drifts. Indeed, the beautiful silver-coated Canada Lynx is one of the most magnificent creatures of the New Jersey forest. Image Size: 10.75 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B09224)

David Hockney OM, CH, RA (b.1937) "Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy” Signed and dated (19)76, numbered 67/96, lithograph, 71cm by 94cm Provenance: Jonathan Silver Collection, Salts Mill, YorkshireFootnote: Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1937, David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. A painter, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, Hockney’s many talents have earned him world-wide recognition.Hockney studied at the Royal College of Art in London, during which time he was a part of the Young Contemporaries exhibition, which declared the arrival of the British Pop Art movement. He was just 26 when he had his first solo exhibition in 1963 and went onto exhibit in over 400 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions, including a major show at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2006 in which over 150 works created over five decades were exhibited. Hockney has been awarded multiple awards throughout his life, beginning with the John Moores Painting Prize in 1967. He has been a Royal Academician since 1985 and in 2012 he was appointed to The Order of Merit for his contribution to the arts and sciences. Throughout his long career Hockney has experimented with a variety of mediums, from traditional painting and printmaking to the use of fax machines and iPads, capturing a wide range of subject matter. He is perhaps most widely recognised for photo collages and a series of paintings of swimming pools he created following a move to Los Angeles in 1964, inspired by vibrant Californian colour and light. Portraiture has been a constant throughout his career, capturing the most important figures in his life and incorporating personal elements of both his life and his sitters’.The sheer variety of subject and media which he has explored throughout his career, executed with wit, charm and panache, has enabled him to create striking forms and intriguing concepts that have inspired legions of admirers.Condition report: Float mounted and has a deckled edge. [cf. Bondy p.114-5]Glasgow, David Bryce unless otherwise stated, dates where given; and c.70 other miniature books, mostly published by Bryce (see Condition Report), with one exception all in original publisher's bindingsFootnotes:THE SMALLEST BOOKS IN THE WORLD: AN EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION OF MINIATURE VOLUMES, mostly produced by the Glasgow publisher David Bryce & Son, often in collaboration with Henry Frowde at the Oxford University Press. In a short space of time Bryce went from the position of a relatively unknown publisher to that of a vastly successful entrepreneur, using the latest printing technologies to produce 'more wee books than the total world production up to that time' (James Henderson, 'David Bryce & Son', The News-letter of the LXIV-mos, no. 11, 15 October 1928). As Bryce wrote in 1876, 'I descended to the miniature, mite and midget size, producing a little dictionary, the smallest in the world, in a locket accompanied by a magnifying glass. I had many a scoff and jeer as to the absurdity of the production, nevertheless it at once appealed... and its sales are now over 100,000.'Some of the books in the collection are housed in original or specially made boxes, cases and other furniture - including two large glass-fronted bookcases which contain some of the largest and smallest volumes. The collection contains many of the books described in the chapter devoted to Bryce in Louis Bondy's Miniature Books, 1981, including the Qur'an, the English and French & English dictionaries, Gray's Elegy (the smallest Bryce book, 'exceedingly rare... at one time said not to exist'), three Bibles chained to model lecterns, the facsimile of Burns' Poems, and several of the sets such as the 'Ellen Terry Shakespeare'.The 'Mite Koran', in its distinctive red, blue or black leather bindings with a circular void in the gilt pattern, was a photolithographic reduction of two different Ottoman editions, and was printed on India paper specially produced for Bryce by Henry Frowde at the Oxford University Press. The two copies of the Qur'an included here are both the variant described by Nick McBurney as the '1871 Bryce', easily distinguished from the '1884 Bryce' (which was based on a different Istanbul edition) by the inclusion of the signatures and seals of ten Islamic scholars at the end. It is often noted that these Qur'ans were issued to Muslim soldiers fighting in World War I, but in fact they were printed on an industrial scale for export to the Arab world, where they were mostly carried as keepsakes rather than used for reading. Y. Usher Collection, Glendining’s, July 1975; R. W. Gould Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, June 2012. Joseph Swanswick was born in Germany in c.1777 and was taken into British pay and service with the Minorca Regiment in November 1798, giving his trade as labourer. He served until March 1809 when he was discharged in the rank of Sergeant in consequence of being blind due to ophthalmia. Admitted to an Out Pension on 13 April 1809, he died in Cork on 21 March 1854. In November 1798, when Charles Stuart captured Minorca the Spanish garrison included a ‘Swiss’ regiment, over 1,000 strong. These men, who were not Swiss at all but mainly Germans and Tyrolese, with a dusting of Hungarians, had been part of an Austrian army defeated in Italy and taken prisoners by the French in 1796. They were taken into British pay and service as the Minorca Regiment, which was included in the contingent that Abercromby took to Egypt in 1801. On 21 March 1801, at the battle of Aboukir, Private Antione Lutz of the Minorca Regiment captured the standard of the enemy 21st Demi-Brigade, known as the ‘Invincibles’. At the end of the campaign, during which the regiment had suffered more than 200 casualties, including its lieutenant-colonel who had been killed, the regiment’s title was changed to the Queen’s German Infantry in recognition of its fighting qualities. In 1802 the corps was taken to England and in January 1805 it was brought into the Line as the British 97th Foot. Just one officer and five men of the original Queen’s Germans claimed M.G.S. medals in 1848, but only Swanswick had the single clasp for Egypt, having seen no subsequent service in the Peninsula. His medal was consequently the only one to be named to the Queen’s German Regiment.
