The manuscript letter, bearing a blind embossed seal to the upper right corner, is a Decree to the Chapter of Russian Imperial and Royal Orders, bestowing the Order of Saint Anna to Commander Major General Martynov, Judge Councillor of Olonetsky Ivan Bek, Superintendent of Sevastopol Ilya Morozov.. Further listing several dismissals and ordering the Chapter to issue insignias and credentials to the Knights. Countersigned at the base by Duke Alexander of Wurttemberg, 26th January 1832. The two sheets are partially semi-detached. VG £800-1200

The partially printed document being a certificate, bearing a large heading "Cardinalis Joachimus Pecci", given to Anselmus Anselmi. Signed by Leo XIII in his capacity as Archbishop of Perugia. Folded to the centre. With a blind embossed seal to the front left lower corner and two watermarks, one showing a bird. Showing to the verso a contemporary annotation alongside a Curia Citta di Castello ink stamp. Very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £150-200

ROSSINI GIOACCHINO: (1792-1868) Italian Composer. A rare A.M.Q.S., G. Rossini, three pages, 4to, musical score paper, London, 26th June 1824, annotations in Italian. Rossini has carefully penned 24 bars of music on two and three staves corresponding to his opera Ermione (1819), adding multiple side annotations, tempos, `Canto.. Pianoforte.. ´ as well as voice texts beneath the musical notes `Cosi piu mio non e.., come si puo cosi… e questa soffre il ciel, perfidia ed empie.. e ancor per l´infedel un fulmine non ha…´. Signed and dated in bold black ink at the base. The musical score sheets bears attractive blind embossed ornated borders. Professionally repaired to the fold and to the verso. G £5000-8000Ermione (1819) is an opera in two acts by Rossini, which is based on the play Andromaque by Jean Racine. The opera was withdrawn after few performances and would only be performed again a hundred years after Rossini´s death. Rossini said about it "It's my little Italian Guillaume Tell; and it will not see the light of day until after my death."

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. A good signed 6.5 x 3.5 clipped piece by Hitler, beneath the typed text “Fuhrer headquarters, 4th of April 1944”, in German. Signed in bold blue pencil by Hitler alongside a large blind embossed seal of the Nazi eagle, swastika and oak leaves. Matted in black beneath a 5 x 7.5 photograph showing Hitler seated, in a half length pose, wearing his nazi uniform, to an overall size of 8 x 12. VG £1200-1500

FRICK WILHELM: (1877-1946) German Politician. Reich Minister of the Interior of the Nazi Party 1933-43, replaced by Himmler in 1943. Last Governor of Bohemia and Moravia. Frick was tried and convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials and was executed by hanging. Frick was at the head of the Kriminalpolizei (“Criminal Police”) in Munich, where he took part in Hitler´s failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, for which he was convicted of high treason. A.L.S., `Willy´, four pages, 4to, Berlin, 19th March 1938, on his Ministry printed stationery, to his sister Emma, in German. Frick states in part `Thank you very much for your last two letters, especially for your birthday wishes, which were somehow disturbed by the recent political events…The political events are the so-called Anschluss..´ Accompanied by a printed card, dated March 1937, Frick thanking for the wishes on his 60th birthday and the support received for his work for the Fuhrer. The card bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal of the Nazi eagle on the swastika. About VG £600-900

CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. Known as the "Father of the Motherland", Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. An attractive signed printed document, one page, folio, Bayamo, 27th December 1868, in Spanish. The document being a decree is entitled "Slavery Conditioned Abolition Decree - Carlos Manuel de Cespedes - Captain-General of the Liberator Army of Cuba and Leader of the Provisional Government", and bears a very attractive and large vignette to the heading. The decree contains nine articles, and starts stating `The Cuban Revolution, proclaiming the independence of the Homeland and with it all freedoms, cannot accept the inconsistency of restricting it to only one part of the country´s population. A free Cuba is incompatible with a proslavery Cuba..´ further saying in its first article `All slaves are declared free..´. Boldly signed by Cespedes at the base of the document `C. M Cespedes´. Bearing a large blind embossed seal to the head and an ink stamp of the "Ilustre Ayuntamiento Libre de Bayamo" at the base. The document grants freedom to `Nemesio, apprentice, 16 years old, black..´ Overall age wear, with edges slightly trimmed, tear and small areas of paper loss. F £400-600

A.L.S., `Carolina´, one page, 4to, n.p., 27th May 1808, to her son, the future King Francis I. The Queen refers to her son´s letter and to children. The letter bears a very attractive embossed seal to the front. With blank integral leaf; MARIA AMALIA OF NAPLES & SICILY (1782-1866) French Queen as spouse of French King Louis Philippe I. A.L.S., `Amalia´, one page, 8vo, n.p., 29th June 1813, to her brother the Heir Prince Francis. The Princess states in part `My dear Francesco, our dear Father has written to me this morning saying that he is displeased not knowing that we had written to our dear Mother, I have promised him that you will let him know…´ With blank address leaf bearing remnants of a former red wax seal; and MARIA ISABELLA OF SPAIN (1789-1848) Infanta of Spain. Queen consort of the Two Sicilies as spouse of King Francis I. A.L.S., `Maria Isabella´, one page, 4to, to Prince of Scilla. The letter bears a blind embossed seal at the heading, the Queen referring in part to Spanish and her pride `..glory of being Spanish..´ With blank integral leaf. G, 3 £150-200

The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal with Dumas initials. Dumas states `Am leaving for two months, feel free to decide on my behalf during my absence, I have not settle agreements with any theatre. You can make them perform...´ With blank integral leaf. Folded, with several very small pinholes not affecting the text or signature. G to VG £150-200Jean Baptiste Porcher (1792-1864) French former theatre employee who created an agency which used to buy copyrights to their authors.

SAND GEORGE: (1804-1876) French Novelist. A.L.S., George Sand, one page, 8vo, n.p., 3rd March n.y., to a gentleman, on her blind embossed monogrammed stationery, in French. Sand states 'If you'd like to read the letter I sent to you for Mr. Shaw, you will then be aware of my doubts regarding the help I am able to give him, and my sincere desire to give him all possible assistance' and concludes by hoping that she will be able to see her correspondent soon, remarking 'I am normally at home at midday and at 5pm'. ESTRADA PALMA TOMAS: (1835-1908) First President of Cuba 1902-1906, and previously during the Ten Year´s War. Remembered for allowing the Platt Amendment which ensured American dominance over Cuba. D.S., `T. Estrada Palma´, one page, large 15 x 12, La Habana, 14th September 1904, to Servando Valle, in Spanish. The partially printed document bearing the large printed heading "Tomas Estrada Palma - President of the Republic of Cuba", is a title granting Cuban nationality to Spanish-born Servando Valle. With a blind embossed seal of the Cuban Presidency of the republic to the front. The title bears the Whiting Paper Co watermark. Largely repaired to the verso to the folds. Folded, with small tear to the centre fold and overall age wear and creasing. F to G £200-300

VOLTAIRE: (1694-1778) French Enlightenment Writer and Philosopher. Voltaire is a pseudonym, his name being François-Marie Arouet. Voltaire is known for his attacks on Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion and expression, and separation of church and state. Rare L.S., `Voltaire´, two pages, 4to, Chateau de Ferney, Geneva, 18th July 1763, to Monsieur Dehaye Minime, in French. Voltaire states in part `Forgive, Monsieur, an old man ill and almost blind, if I haven´t thank you earlier for your flattering prose and your lovely verses. If I was healthy and young…´ further saying `..It seems to me that the water of Hippocrene matches better with you than the Neapolitan oil which is not curing Louis Eleven..´ With blank address leaf. Overall age wear and light foxing. Professionally repaired to the folds. G £2000-3000

Delaplaine Scull. The partially printed document being an admission card of the University College, London, to the class of Egyptology, First Term, Session 1894-95. Signed at the base by Petrie as the Professor. The card bears a blind embossed seal of the UCL to the upper left corner. Small overall age wear with small foxing stains, otherwise G £120-200

MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949) Belgian Poet and Playwright. Nobel Prize in Literature 1911. An early interesting A.L.S., M. Maeterlinck, two pages, 8vo, n.p., [Gand], n.d., [1890], to a colleague, in French. Maeterlinck explains to his correspondent his parent´s disagreement referring to his sketch portrait by Minne, and states `I finally send you the sketch. Georges Minne, after keeping it for several days without reporting at all, send it back to me now and tells me that it is not necessary to fix it. But it happens that my parents, after I showed them the drawing, want to absolutely forbid me to publish it (if it ever was the case) as it is now, because they believe I look too much in a way I shouldn´t.´ further saying `..make it, if possible, and giving them this small satisfaction, looking a little bit more distinguished.. which they claim!´ On a post-scriptum, Maeterlinck concludes `I have just sent to Verlaine the 3 books´. A letter of very good association. VG £100-120George Minne (1866-1941) Belgian Artist and Sculptor.Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) French Poet. Considered one of the greatest French poets.The three books Maeterlinck refers to in the present letter are most probably Serres Chaudes (1889), La Princesse Maleine (1889) (Princess Maleine) and Les Aveugles (1890) (The Blind).

SAINTE-BEUVE CHARLES AUGUSTIN: (1804-1869) French literary Critic. Proust´s masterwork A la Recherche du temps perdu develops the ideas contained in his well-known set of essays Contre Sainte-Beuve ("Against Sainte-Beuve"). A very interesting A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Saturday, to a woman [Jeanne Destourbet], in French. Sainte Beuve starts his letter stating `My dear and kind friend, I was feeling bad yesterday, and to my great regret had to leave suddenly although didn´t want to. Pasha Halil Bey had invited me for dinner next Saturday together with you..´ further sending intimate compliments to his correspondent `Yesterday your beauty was enhanced and superb. I can see that you have more than one kind of beauty, it´s as per your wish, depending on the day, on your whims, I like both. I even like the third, when you wear your robe de chamber, your hair half-combed..´ A letter of good association. With integral blank leaf. Together with A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Friday, to a Monsieur de Lavergne, in French. Sainte Beuve politely rejects his correspondent´s dinner invitation, stating in part `I am just returning from my library, (today was my day) so tired and exhausted that I cannot accept the pleasure of having dinner with you. I will think about it with sadness on my bed where I will spend the rest of the evening…´ With a blind embossed seal from Bath to the upper left corner. Bearing to the verso the correspondent´s name and address in Sainte-Beuve´s hand. Very small folding, otherwise VG £60-90 Jeanne Tourbey (1837- ?) Also known as Jeanne Destourbet was a very famous courtesan of her time. Prince Jerome Napoleon offered her a large house in Paris where she used to receive a long list of lovers including Alexandre Dumas, Téophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, Sainte-Beuve, and Pasha Halil Serif who spent several millions in presents and looking after her. Pasha Halil Serif (1831-1879) Also known as Halil Bey, Ottoman diplomat and art collector. Appointed commissioner to the International Exhibition in Paris in 1855, and later Ottoman Ambassador to Athens and Saint Petersburg where he began collecting art. Téophile Gautier described Pasha´s collection as "The first ever to be formed by a child of Islam". Pasha Halil serif was introduced to Gustave Courbet by Sainte-Beuve, and commissioned Le Sommeil ("The Sleepers") and L´origine du monde from him. His collection included several Delacroix masterpieces.

The attractive partially printed document, in German, is a patent given by Wilhelm II, in his capacity as King of Prussia, to Engineer of the Pionerkorps Captain Von der Heyden. Boldly signed in black ink at the foot by the Kaiser, a very large and good example signature. Also bearing alongside the Emperor´s signature a large and very attractive Hohenzollern coat of arms blind embossed seal. Also bearing a small Royal ink stamp to the upper left front. Saint-Saëns states in part `My dear friend, I have given a recommendation letter addressed to you for Mme B. Gianoli who has recently sang two of my works on concert. It is a small woman, with not a really great voice but who has a talent of first rank, an unusual musical intelligence and an even more extraordinary modesty. Her dream would be to get some advices from you…´ The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal with the composer´s initials. One very small stain not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG £150-200Pauline viardot (1821-1910) French Mezzo-Soprano and pedagogue of Spanish descent. A leading figure opera singer figure.

The partially printed document shows a very attractive heading "Wilhelm by Grace of God, King of Prussia", being the accreditation letter appointing Roderich Kamcke as consul of Germany to Belfast. The document bears beneath the Emperor´s signature a large and attractive blind embossed Imperial seal. Countersigned by Bernhard von Bulow on behalf of Bismarck and during his absence.
