A Houghton Victo Half-Plate Mahogany and Brass Camera, with black bellows, serial no. 23201 with brass `Victo` plate on lens board and Ensign `British Made` ivorine plate on side, with Ensign roller-blind shutter (not tested for accuracy, but apparently working), Ensign f/8 8in Symmetrical lens with leather lens cap, one dds, matching tripod and dark focusing cloth, body E, lens G-E Unusually well preserved and attractive - landmark design that is hard to find with a date as late as this. Bellows supple and intact, wood exceptionally well preserved with very few of the usual marks and abrasions except for a few scuffs inside baseboard. Leather strap intact, maroon leather lens cap. Brasswork bright and clean with attractive figuration on tripod ring. Lens and shutter in fine cosmetic condition, glass good.

A Thornton-Pickard Ruby Half-Plate Mahogany and Brass Camera, serial no. 2613a, with brass binding and red bellows, working roller-blind shutter, stereo and normal lens boards, Taylor, Taylor & Hobson f/6.5 7.7 in Cooke lens and cased close-up lens, all G, with three dds and canvas case Camera believed to have been used by a portrait photographer in Clevedon Bristol c. 1905, but it only carries signs of light use. Difficult to find this camera in such complete and smart condition, and the lens and accessories are most desirable. Battered canvas case the only trivial downside.

A Chapman `The British` Quarter-Plate Mahogany and Brass Camera, with maroon bellows (possibly a replacement), Thornton-Pickard roller-blind shutter, Wray f/5.6 5.5 in brass lens, three double-dark slides in fitted canvas case, body G, shutter working, lens F/G Bellows intact and attractive, but may be of later manufacture. Wood has usual minor abrasions with small area of abrasion on base, but attractive. Brasswork intact, some minor corrosion. Shutter appears to work - lens reversed to fit brass collar. Lens glass mostly clean, a few trivial marks. Case heavily worn, carry handle detached.

Lens rear element has some separation to rear edge, otherwise clean and clear, roller-blind shutter tested with cable release, some heavier wear to leather carry strap by fixing, glass plate to rear appears to be a replacement, different colour wood, ivorine lable printed `Benetink & Co Cheapside London EC`, some light scratching and marks to body of camera, bellows some pin holes to corners

A Thornton-Pickard Half-Plate Mahogany and Brass Imperial Triple-Extension Field Camera, F-G, with Dallmeyer f/6.5 4.25 in wide angle Anastigmat lens serial no. 146704, G, in damaged lensboard and working roller-blind shutter; and three dds Attractive comb-jointed body in above average condition, with few signs of use. Brasswork complete and shiny, bellows appear to be in good shape. Lens has a tiny amount of separation at extreme edges but is also in above-average condition.

A Stanley`s Patent Half-Plate Field Camera, F, with missing glass screen and worn bellows, with f/8 brass lens, F, with two non-working shutters and three non-matching dds Camera complete apart from glass back. Mahogany finish in quite good condition, with the usual minor marks. Bellows stiff, discoloured and will not fold flat following repair. Roller blind shutter has no pull-cord; earlier lever operated design may not be complete. Lens quite attractive externally with some fungus and marks that might improve with cleaning. dds fit OK but do not match each other and may not be original.

An Edison Disc Phonograph, Model S-19, No. SM 181837, Sheraton sans Inlay, with mahogany finish case, gilt fittings, volume control, octagon pattern blind fret and grille and Largs, Dundee supplier`s label - 44 3/4 in. high (two castors off)

Wood and Brass Field Cameras: tailboard camera by Photo-Vulga Paris, plate size 13 x 18cm, revolving bellows giving landscape or portrait by means of stud-and-keyhole system, F-G, with non-working roller blind shutter and unmarked meniscus lens with screw-in aperture, G; and Houghton Triple Victo half-plate serial no. 11576, P, missing tripod fitments, lens board not original The French camera shows signs of light to moderate use, with no major issue. It has intact but shabby bellows and comes with a simple lens and French-made shutter, which needs repair. Good example of a design popular on the Continent but less so in the UK. Victo is shabby with various faults and missing parts and is a restoration project. It does have reasonably intact bellows, though.

A Thornton-Pickard Imperial Perfecta, half-plate size, with Thornton-Pickard Beck Symmetrical lens and Ross f/8 Zeiss Patent 120mm wide angle brass lens, serial no. 7055, both for (working) roller-blind shutter, set of 6 dds, tripod and other items (a lot) Attractive outfit in above-average condition. Camera body in comb-jointed mahogany, original finish, mostly in good shape except for crack on one side. Brasswork attractive and apparently original and complete. Handle, turntable present. Bellows intact and apparently in good condition. Shutter appears to work well, though obviously not necessarily accurately. T-P Beck lens in nice order, brass mostly shiny and elements clean. Quaint lens cap with exposure guide printed inside. Ross lens has working lever operated iris and elements above average with only a little separation at extreme edges and minor internal dust. Appearance good with some tarnishing. Attractive tripod. Useful pack of matching dark slides, also unrelated 5 x 4 Kodak dds and glass back.

A Zeiss Anastigmat f/6.3 210mm Lens with Wooden Half-Plate Camera, Ross, London serial no. 566, aluminium lens body, working lever-operated iris, complete with flange, hood and maroon leather cap, F, camera unmarked but probably made in Birmingham, with roller-blind shutter and three dds, P-F Rear rim has a ding, not visible when lens is mounted. Otherwise lens body is clean. Elements slightly cloudy with trivial internal dust and fungus, might clean up if dismantled. Camera needs attention but is complete and restorable.

LOWRY L. S.: (1887-1976) English Artist. A signed 20.5 x 17 colour print of Lowry's painting entitled Landscape with Farm Buildings, published by Venture Prints, 1974, in a limited edition of 850. Signed by Lowry in bold pencil with his name alone to the lower white border, which also features the blind embossed stamps of the Fine Art Trade Guild. Professionally matted in green and cream with pale decorative borders and framed and glazed in a brown wooden frame to an overall size of 31.5 x 27. EX

SALISBURY MARQUIS OF: (1830-1903) British Prime Minister 1885-86, 1886-92, 1895-1902. A.L.S., with the scarcer early form of his signature Robert G Cecil, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (London), 3rd July 1863, to G. F. Chambers, on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons. Salisbury states that he fears that 'a proposal, such as that you suggest, which would practically amount to a proposal to prohibit the Prince of Wales from granting sites for Wesleyan Chapels in Cornwall, would have no chance of acceptance in the House of Commons.' Together with an ink signature ('Salisbury') on a piece removed from the conclusion of a letter, with three lines of holograph text. G to VG, 2

The partially printed document is a Naval commission appointing Bertram David to be a Chief Boatswain. Signed by Wilson at the foot and countersigned by Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) United States Secretary of the Navy 1913-21. With blind embossed blue paper seal affixed. Some light surface creasing, minor staining and some age wear, particularly to the edges, otherwise about VG

CASEMENT ROGER: (1864-1916) Irish Patriot, Revolutionary and Nationalist, executed for treason. Rare T.L.S., Roger Casement, one page, 4to, Para, Brazil, 22nd April 1908, to Walter Ives Farrand, on the blind embossed stationery of the British Consulate. Casement's formal letter states, in full, 'With the consent of His Majesty's Minister at Rio de Janeiro, I hereby authorise you to take charge of His Majesty's Consulate in Para, during my absence on a tour of inspection in the interior of my Consular district, and to this end I hereby appoint you to be Acting British Consul in this city during my absence.' Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG

SADDAM HUSSEIN: (1937-2006) President of Iraq 1979-2003. Executed. D.S., in Arabic, one page, 4to, n.p. (Baghdad?), n.d. The partially printed document, in Arabic (untranslated) is on blind embossed stationery featuring the Iraq coat of arms and is signed by Saddam Hussein with his name alone in red fountain pen ink. JELLICOE EARL: (1859-1935) British Admiral of the Fleet during World War I. A.L.S., J R Jellicoe, two pages, 4to, n.p., 2nd October 1916, to 'My dear Sir Charles', on the blind embossed and printed stationery of H.M.S. Iron Duke. Jellicoe states that he should be most glad to welcome his correspondent in the Fleet, but is not sure it will be worth while him coming for a day, explaining 'Our circumstances are such that with great regret we are not able to put up visitors onboard for a night at the main base & consequently this means arrival at say 9am & return at about 5 or 6pm to Thurso & ourselves staying 2 nights at Thurso. It is quite comfortable there.' The admiral continues to offer further advice on making his correspondent's proposed visit as pleasant as possible, concluding 'I should avoid leaving London on Saturday, Sunday or Friday owing to train difficulties at this end.' Together with a fine vintage signed 8 x 11.5 photograph showing Jellicoe standing in a formal full length pose wearing his full naval uniform and medals. Signed ('Jellicoe AF') in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount immediately beneath the image. Some slight traces of former mounting evident, not affecting either piece, otherwise VG

GOEBBELS JOSEPH: (1897-1945) German Politician, Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1933-45. T.L.S., Dr. Goebbels, one page, small 4to, Berlin, Christmas 1937, [to Trude Mohr], on Goebbels's personal printed stationery featuring a blind embossed swastika and Nazi eagle. The printed form letter, in German, sends Goebbels's warmest wishes and blessings for Christmas and the New Year and adds that he hopes the recipient enjoys some festive joy. With blank integral leaf. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, VG The letter was sent to Trude Mohr (1902-1989) First Reichsreferentin of the Bund Deutscher Madel (The League of German Girls), the female wing of the Hitler Youth and the only female youth organisation in Nazi Germany.

With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG Provenance: Accompanied by the original statement of origin signed by Richard O. Rex stating that he personally removed the stationery from the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in July 1945 after having been flown in to help establish a medical dispensary for use during The Potsdam Conference. Also signed by a Notary Public as a witness. Together with copies of further supporting detailed documentation relating to Rex and his acquisitions.

Goering's personal printed oblong 12mo visiting card featuring Goering's facsimile signature beneath the printed words Heil Hitler! at the centre. A blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika appear in the upper left corner. Some very light, extremely minor age wear at the edges, otherwise EX Provenance: Accompanied by the original statement of origin signed by Richard O. Rex stating that he personally removed the visiting card from the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in July 1945 after having been flown in to help establish a medical dispensary for use during The Potsdam Conference. A miscellaneous selection of Adolf Hitler's unused printed stationery, mainly 4to, featuring a variety of designs including a gold printed Nazi eagle and swastika with the words Der Fuhrer beneath, another piece with Hitler's name printed in black and his address at Kanzlei Des Fuhrers in Berlin, stationery printed for Adjutantur Des Fuhrers at the Reichskanzlei, Berlin (each with Nazi eagle and swastika), another with a blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika with the printed words Kanzlei des Fuhrers der NSDAP and some simply printed with the words Der Fuhrer und Reichskanzler and blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika etc. Some with blank integral leafs. Countersigned by Henry Matthews (1826-1913) British Lawyer and Politician, Home Secretary 1886-92. With blind embossed paper seal. Together with Ernest II (1818-1893) Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha 1844-93. D.S, one page, folio, Gotha, 25th July 1887, in German, being the partially printed document granting Cowell the order of Ernest, and a further related letter. VG, 3

A rare D.S., Albert, on behalf of his son, the infant Prince of Wales, large oblong folio (vellum), Brighton, 5th March 1842. The manuscript document, issued in the name of Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, Duke of Saxony, Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay etc., appoints James Robert Gardiner to be Auditor and Keeper of the Records of the Duchy of Cornwall and indicates that he will receive an annual salary of £400. Boldly signed by Prince Albert in dark ink at the foot. With a blind embossed paper seal affixed by a tag at the base and a good red wax seal affixed by a blue ribbon at the centre of the base and contained in a gold coloured case with the embossed Prince of Wales feathers. The partially printed document is a Remission document addressed to the Justices for the Petty Sessional Division of Taunton Borough, Somerset, and relates to Coleen Locke who was convicted, on 29th September 1965, 'of using apparatus for wireless telegraphy without a licence' and ordered to pay a fine of £6, the document pardoning Locke of the fine. Countersigned at the foot by Roy Jenkins (1920-2003) British Politician, Home Secretary 1965-67. With red blind embossed paper seal affixed. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and some light overall creasing and minor areas of discoloration. G

A German Black Forest carved oak weight-driven four horn ÔtrumpeterÕ wall clock Attributed to Emilian Wehrle and Co., Furtwangen, with retailerÕs signature for P. Shackleton, Sowerby Bridge, circa 1870 The two train movement with skeletonised plates and anchor escapement, playing a tune every hour on four ÔtrumpetsÕ via a pinned wooden barrel mounted on the backplate and two crank driven bellows fitted above the plates whilst revealing a polychrome figure of a trumpet player from behind the pair of lancet-shaped doors beneath the dial, the gabled case with Gothic arch lattice tracery blind fret decoration to front incorporating rosette carved gilt Roman numeral dial flanked by applied ebonised baton decoration and fretwork side projections, the base with hanging tracery apron, the sides with pierced access doors, (losses to case and other faults), 74cm (29ins) high. Emilian Werhle was born in 1832 and followed in his fatherÕs footsteps into the clockmaking trade. In 1866 he married and went into business with his father-in-law specialising in trumpeter clocks, he died in 1896. Percival Shackleton in recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in Sowerby Bridge 1871.

Rowley, London, late 19th century The substantial four pillar triple chain fusee movement chiming a choice of two tunes on either eight bells or four gongs and striking the hour on a further gong, the 7 inch shallow-arch gilt brass dial with fine foliate scroll engraved centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised fleur-de-lys half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to outer track and signed A & H ROWLEY, THEOBALDS RD. to lower margin, the angles with conforming scroll engraved decoration continuing up into the arch to form infill around the subsidiary CHIME/SILENT and CHIME ON 8 BELLS/CAMBRIDGE CHIMES selection dials, the case with brass fillet bordered foliate scroll blind fret infill to the shallow arch pediment raised on a box upstand over ogee cornice and conforming upper quadrant frets, the front with fluted pilasters with fine cast Corinthian caps and bases flanking bevel-glazed dial aperture with canted silvered fillet insert, the sides with further shallow arch foliate scroll sound frets flanked by conforming pilasters, on cavetto moulded apron base with brass bracket feet, 51cm (21ins) high.

A George III mahogany eight-day longcase clock with moonphase Peter Fearnley, Wigan, circa 1780 The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with 14 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial and sweep calendar hand to the fine Ho-Ho bird inhabited foliate scroll engraved centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring with calendar to inside edge and Arabic five minutes to outer track, the angles applied with foliate scroll cast spandrels beneath arch with rolling moonphase calibrated for age of the moon to edge of disc and with lunettes applied with pierced and engraved decoration incorporating text TIME IS VALUABLE, the upper edge of the arch signed PETER FEARNLEY WIGAN to an applied curved plate, the swan neck pedimented case with central upstand and gilt leafy scroll decorated verre eglomise infill above ring-turned columns to hood, the trunk with blind fret collar above shaped-top caddy moulded flame figured door flanked by fluted quarter columns, on raised panel fronted plinth base with canted angles and shallow mounded skirt, 235cm (92.5ins) high. Peter Fearnley is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as born circa 1749, he married Ann Lawson (from a fellow Wigan clockmaking family) in 1776 and died 1826. The current lot is a classic example of FearnleyÕs work with details such as the engraved dial centre and fine applied decoration to the lunettes of the arch only seen on his best work.
