SAINTE-BEUVE CHARLES AUGUSTIN: (1804-1869) French literary Critic. Proust´s masterwork A la Recherche du temps perdu develops the ideas contained in his well-known set of essays Contre Sainte-Beuve ("Against Sainte-Beuve"). A very interesting A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Saturday, to a woman [Jeanne Destourbet], in French. Sainte Beuve starts his letter stating `My dear and kind friend, I was feeling bad yesterday, and to my great regret had to leave suddenly although didn´t want to. Pasha Halil Bey had invited me for dinner next Saturday together with you..´ further sending intimate compliments to his correspondent `Yesterday your beauty was enhanced and superb. I can see that you have more than one kind of beauty, it´s as per your wish, depending on the day, on your whims, I like both. I even like the third, when you wear your robe de chamber, your hair half-combed..´ A letter of good association. With integral blank leaf. Together with A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Friday, to a Monsieur de Lavergne, in French. Sainte Beuve politely rejects his correspondent´s dinner invitation, stating in part `I am just returning from my library, (today was my day) so tired and exhausted that I cannot accept the pleasure of having dinner with you. I will think about it with sadness on my bed where I will spend the rest of the evening…´ With a blind embossed seal from Bath to the upper left corner. Bearing to the verso the correspondent´s name and address in Sainte-Beuve´s hand. Very small folding, otherwise VG £100-150 Jeanne Tourbey (1837- ?) Also known as Jeanne Destourbet was a very famous courtesan of her time. Prince Jerome Napoleon offered her a large house in Paris where she used to receive a long list of lovers including Alexandre Dumas, Téophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, Sainte-Beuve, and Pasha Halil Serif who spent several millions in presents and looking after her. Pasha Halil Serif (1831-1879) Also known as Halil Bey, Ottoman diplomat and art collector. Appointed commissioner to the International Exhibition in Paris in 1855, and later Ottoman Ambassador to Athens and Saint Petersburg where he began collecting art. Téophile Gautier described Pasha´s collection as "The first ever to be formed by a child of Islam". Pasha Halil serif was introduced to Gustave Courbet by Sainte-Beuve, and commissioned Le Sommeil ("The Sleepers") and L´origine du monde from him. His collection included several Delacroix masterpieces.
SCOTT ROBERT FALCON: (1868-1912) British Antarctic Explorer. A very fine, rare vintage signed sepia 7 x 10 photograph, the photogravure image depicting Scott standing in a half length pose, c.1900. Photograph by J. Thomson of London and bearing his blind embossed Royal Warrant to the lower photographer's mount. Signed ('Con') by Scott with his family name in dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Some light age wear and very minor mottling to the photographer's mount and very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left and right edges, about VG £1500-2000 'Scott of the Antarctic' led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: The Discovery Expedition of 1901-04 and the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-13. On the first expedition he set a new southern record and discovered the Polar Plateau on which the South Pole is located. During the second venture Scott led a party of five which reached the South Pole on 17th January 1912 after Roald Amundsen's Norwegian Expedition.On their return journey, Scott and his companions died from a combination of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold. Following the news of his death Scott became a celebrated hero and national icon.
NICHOLAS I: (1796-1855) Emperor of Russia 1825-55. A good A.L.S., `Nicolas´, three pages, 8vo, Tsarkoye Selo, 24th July 1831, to Countess Orlov, in French. The Emperor sends a warm and kind letter to Countess Orlov, referring to her husband and friend of him, stating in part `Please allow me Madame to apologize for being the cause of the quite often separations you and your husband suffer… Nevertheless, if it helps in any way to comfort you, I would say that all these difficult tasks entrusted to your husband make him prove his tireless zeal and his talents…on this precise occasion he is rending a service to me and to the Homeland, and he is doing so Madame in an admirable way. However we will still have to wait few more days before everything will be concluded. Please forgive me if I am always a permanent problem for you two...´ The emperor adds an interesting post-scriptum announcing `..I have just had the pleasure to watch my wife giving luckily birth to a son Nicolas.´ The document bears a blind embossed seal to the upper left corner. One small tear not affecting the signature, otherwise VG £1000-1500 Alexei Feodorovich Orlov (1787-1862) Russian Diplomat and Count. One of the most trusted agents of Nicholas I as Ambassador and plenipotentiary at the Adrianople and Paris Peace treaties. He would later be appointed by the Emperor head of the infamous Third Section, the Russian secret police. Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1831-1891) Grand Duke of Russia, third son of Nicholas I. Field Marshal and Head Commander of the Russian Army.
BOYER ALEXIS : (1757-1833) French Anatomist and Surgeon who was appointed by Napoleon Imperial family surgeon and accompanied the Emperor in the Prussia and Poland campaigns. A.L.S., `Boyer´, one page, 4to, Paris, 17th September 1808, to Germain la Rousserie de Neuvic, in French. Boyer, in his capacity as professor and chief-surgeon of the Medicine school and first surgeon of His Majesty the Emperor of the French, signs a certificate explaining that La Rousserie has fulfilled his tasks with zeal at the hospital La Charité. Countersigned by the Mayor of tenth arrondissement of Paris Urbain Firmin Piault (1757-1848), alongside an eagle stamp. The document bears an attractive blind embossed seal. VG £100-120
DEMIDOV ANATOLY NIKOLAIEVICH: (1813-1870) Prince of San Donato. Russian Diplomat and Arts Patron. A.L.S., Demidoff, two pages, 8vo, n.p. [Florence], n.d. [12th April 1854], to an unidentified Count, in French. The letter bears to the upper left corner an attractive blind embossed monogramme. Demidov states `Monsieur le Comte, you have misunderstood me or I did not explain myself properly. I learned that you submitted your resignation as member of the Committee…´ further saying `..I was assured that you reiterated your decision last Monday.. I would have been charmed to serve.´ With blank integral leaf partially detached, and an attractive watermark. VG £80-100
RAEDER ERICH: (1876-1960) German Grand Admiral. He leaded the Kriegs marine until 1943 when he resigned and was replaced by Donitz. D.S., Raeder, one page, 4to, Berlin, 11th December 1937, in German. The attractive document being a certificate and military appointment given by Raeder as Minister-Chancellor of war, and bears a large and attractive blind embossed seal of the Nazi eagle, swastika and oak leaves to the front page. WILHELM I: (1797-1888) German Emperor 1871-88 & King of Prussia 1861-88. D.S., Wilhelm, one page, folio, Babelsberg Palace, 14th December 1864, in German. The partially printed document shows a very attractive heading "Wilhelm by Grace of God, King of Prussia", beneath a large printed eagle crowned, and states in part `We have appointed former prosecutor Karl Friedrich Theodor Ernst Hahn in Ratibor to Council at Tribunal. We expect loyal and obedient services to our King´s House…´ The document bears beneath the Emperor´s signature a large and attractive blind embossed Imperial seal. Countersigned by Leopold von Lippe. With blank integral leaf. Folded, with extremely small tear to the right edge not affecting the text or signatures. VG £100-150
STANISLAW II: (1732-1798) Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1764-95. Lover of Catherine the Great, he was a great patron of the arts, but still remains a controversial figure in Polish history. A good D.S., Stanislaus Augustus Rex´, with holograph `Bonus Frater et.., one page, folio, Warsaw, 22nd December 1775, to King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, at the time of the present letter King of Naples and Sicily, in Latin. Stanislaw II refers to the letter received from King Ferdinand and congratulates him for the new born Princess Maria Anna. She would die in childhood at the age of 4. With blank address leaf, bearing a very large and attractive blind embossed royal paper seal. Folded, with small overall age wear. VG £300-400
SCHLIEMANN HEINRICH: (1822-1890) German Archaeologist. A Pioneer in the study of Bronze Age. Schliemann supported the idea that Homer´s Iliad and Virgil´s Aeneid reflect true historical events. Rare A.L.S., `H. Schliemann´, one page, folio, St. Petersburg, 5th January 1856, to F.C Quien, in German. The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed stationery seal "Henry Schliemann - St. Petersburg", and relates to the purchase of `72 and 51 Java Indigo crates´, their prices, delivery, etc... At that time Schliemann, through fortunate commercial undertakings, laid the foundation stone for his fortune which later enabled him to excavate in Greece and Asia Minor. With blank address leaf, bearing to the verso few post ink stamps from St. Petersburg, and Amsterdam. Folded, with edges partially trimmed, and corner creases. G £800-1000
DUPUYTREN GUILLAUME : (1777-1835) Baron Dupuytren. French military Surgeon. Best known for his description of the Dupuytren´s contracture which is named after him. A brilliant Teacher and a gifted Surgeon who leaded important contributions to medicine and surgery. L.S., `Dupuytren´, one page, 4to, Paris, 4th December 1812, to Louis Joseph Aamon, in French. MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. Signed card `Mussolini´, to a 4 x 2 card, bearing an attractive blind embossed crowned cross monogramme. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink. The card has been affixed to a 4 x 4 page removed from an autograph album. Bearing an unidentified autograph to the verso. Small overall staining. Together with an unsigned vintage postcard photograph showing Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci after being shot in the village of Giulino di Mezzegra, on 28th April 1945. G £80-100

The attractive partially printed document, in German, is a patent given by Wilhelm II in his capacity as King of Prussia, to infantry officer Oberstabsazt Dr. Butterstack. Boldly signed in black ink at the foot by the Kaiser, a very large and good example signature. Signed in bold black ink by Hitler alongside a large blind embossed seal of the Nazi eagle, swastika and oak leaves. With a file hole to the left border, not affecting the seal or signature. A George III figured mahogany chest on chest attributed to George SpeerThe rectangular Greek key carved cornice with blind fret carved frieze above two short and three long drawers with blind fret carving below flanked by reeded canted angles, the lower part with a slide on three long graduated drawers and ogee bracket feet, with Norman Adams label, 115cm wide, 56cm deep, 192cm high.George Speer (1736-1802) is listed as cabinet-maker and upholsterer working at 'The Seven Stars' 2 Great Tower Street, London from 1777 (see G.Beard & C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p.842). Speer is discussed in detail by Anthony Coleridge, George Speer: A Newly Identified Georgian Cabbinet-maker, Apollo, October 1970, p274-283.A chest on chest, dated 1766, labelled and with a pencil inscription, 'Made by George Speer Joiner and Cabinatt (sic) Maker at the Seven Stars in Tower Street, London 1766', which sold Christie's, London 11 April 1991, lot 162, exhibits similar features. In particular the shaped ogee bracket feet, the almost identical blind fret carving and comparable handle and escutcheon patterns (see C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1660-1840, 1996, pl. 880).
