A fine L.S., Nicholas, as Tsar, in Cyrillic, two pages, folio, Tsarskoye Selo, 29th April 1908, to King Haakon VII of Norway, in Cyrillic. The Tsar writes an official diplomatic letter to announce a wedding, in part, 'On the 20th of April, in Tsarskoye Selo, a marriage ceremony between Our dear cousin, Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, daughter of Our dear uncle, His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Pavel Aleksandrovich, and His Royal Highness Prince Wilhelm of Sweden, Duke of Sodermanland, took place….'. Signed by the Tsar at the conclusion and countersigned by Alexander Izvolsky (1856-1919) Russian Diplomat, Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire 1906-10. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope bearing a large, decorative blind embossed paper seal to the verso. A letter of good content and association. About VG   Haakon VII (1872-1957) King of Norway 1905-57.   Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958) Russian Grand Duchess, a paternal first cousin of Tsar Nicholas II and a maternal first cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.    Prince Wilhelm (1884-1965) Swedish and Norwegian Prince, Duke of Sodermanland.   Grand Duchess Maria and Prince Wilhelm were married, as the present letter confirms, at Tsarskoye Selo in 1908. The marriage was an unhappy one and the Grand Duchess felt that she had married beneath herself. There were problems of ego between the couple, and the Grand Duchess also made her husband feel sexually inadequate. The couple divorced in July 1914.

Signed by the Tsar at the conclusion and countersigned by Alexander Izvolsky (1856-1919) Russian Diplomat, Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire 1906-10. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by a loose blind embossed decorative paper seal, most probably detached from the original envelope (no longer present). A letter of good content and association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a few stains, about VG   Haakon VII (1872-1957) King of Norway 1905-57.   Alexei Alexandrovich (1850-1908) Russian Grand Duke, son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia.    Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich died of pneumonia in Paris where he had lived permanently for several years, becoming a familiar sight at restaurants and theatres (particularly on first nights) as a connoisseur of the social, artistic and literary life of the French capital. His death was said to have devastated Tsar Nicholas II, his nephew, who reportedly claimed Alexei as his favourite Uncle.

An unused 4to sheet of Goebbel's printed stationery, featuring the black printed heading Der Reichsminister fur Volksaufklarung und Propaganda beneath a blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika, also with the printed address at Wilhelmplatz, Berlin. Some light creasing otherwise VG Provenance: Accompanied by copies of statements of origin signed by Richard O. Rex stating that he personally removed the stationery from the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in July 1945 after having been flown in to help establish a medical dispensary for use during The Potsdam Conference. Also signed by a Notary Public as a witness.

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. D.S., A Hitler, one page, 4to, Berlin, 26th June 1941, in German. The typed document states 'I confer on the 130 subjects of the German Reich, who are specified on this list, permission to accept the foreign orders and decorations awarded to them. The individual documents confirming this permission are to be provided with facsimiles of my signature.'  At the base of the document is a typed summary of the recipients including members of the President's Private office, the Foreign Office, Army, Navy, various Reich Ministries etc. Countersigned by Otto Meissner (1880-1953, Head of the Office of the Reich President). With blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi swastika and eagle. With blank integral leaf (partially neatly clipped) and with two file holes to left edge, not affecting text or signature. Together with two smaller related typed documents, one signed by Meissner with an abbreviated signature, the first breaking down the 130 recipients by status (civil servants, private individuals etc., also noting Reich Minister Rust), and the second directing that the individual orders be prepared with the date line Berlin, 26th June 1941, and confirming that they should feature a facsimile signature of Hitler. Accompanied by a full English translation. Some very light age wear and a few minor stains, not affecting the signatures. Otherwise VG, 3

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM PENANG &c. by John Thomson. An album of 40 albumen photographs by John Thomson from the 1860s, half of them captioned to mount. Quarto sized bespoke album bound in crushed burgundy morocco with 'Photographs Penang &c.' in gilt to upper cover, decoration in gilt, blind and black, two clasps, lightly rubbed. Internally textured endpaper and a single page of letterpress: Photographs from Penang' with 14 photos titled on recto and no. 15-26 in manuscript on verso - another 14 photographs are not indexed. Some soiling to album leaves. The 40 large albumen photographs are mounted to album pages in both portrait and landscape format, two of them being divided across a pair of pages, panorama style. The album begins with an oval landscape format 26.5 x 20.5cm image titled in manuscript on the album leaf 'No. 1. Penang from the Hill. Photo Thomson. Penang' continuing with images of 'Malay Huts', 26.5x21cm, beach huts at Penang, 'Native Types. The Fruit Stall', 'Chinese Coolies Breakfasting', 'Burmese Temple', 'The "Spoul" halting place', 'No 23 The Prangin River at low water' (particularly fine contrast), a mountain pass and waterfall over two pages, a double-page photograph of a city, Penang? The photographs in the second half of the book are generally not annotated with titles to the album leaf. John Thomson first visited south east Asia in 1861 with camera in tow, returning in 1863 where he developed a documentary style which focussed on naturalistic subjects, especially those of ethnographic and topographical interest. After returning to England in 1866 he used his photographs to illustrate a series of books (Est. plus 17.5% premium) (Illustrated)

Lot 1729

An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock by Dan Brown of Glasgow, with two-train striking movement, subsidiary date and seconds dials. Height 203 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We have the weights, pendulum, door key and winding key. The clock is currently ticking away and striking. The case is in generally good order. There are some minor nibbles to the cornice and a few pieces of dentil work missing. Both the columns are slightly loose at the top but are easy to position. The left hand column has the rear of the top capital missing. The trunk door is slightly warped but does close and lock with the key. The lock and lock escutcheon are later. There are various nibbles and marks to the case however the condition is generally fairly good. The right hand blind fretwork spandrel has a small loss.

Lot 1792

A late 19th/early 20th century Gillow & Co. mahogany turnover top card table, with blind fretwork frieze, raised on tapered legs of square section united by ring turned stretchers, stamped "Gillow & Co. 1007". Height 77.5 cm, depth 48 cm, width 92 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The top is flat and not warped. It has old surface dings, marks and scratches but no significant condition issues. The moulded edge has a small crush on the right hand side. The green baize lined interior is extremely dirty. The foliate engraved hinges are original and in good order. The blind fretwork frieze is in good condition. All corner fretwork spandrels are present. The legs are in generally good condition with no visible repairs or breaks. The turned supporting stretchers are in good order also. The brass castors are slightly recessed in to the spade foot. The two left hand feet have timber losses to the front facing edges.

Lot 1799

A George III mahogany longcase clock by James Kirkland of Glasgow, with brass dial, two-train striking movement, subsidiary seconds hand and date aperture, the hood with blind fretwork and twist columns, the multiple arched trunk door flanked by canted angles. Height 228 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in generally good order. The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away and striking as it should. The hood has damage and losses to the fretwork. The right hand side fretwork return is completely missing. The left hand side is 50% missing. It would make sense to incorporate the remains of the left hand side return into the section missing from the front. The fretwork section above the arch has some minor losses and the material behind has some perforations. The left hand side Gothic window to the hood is missing. The right hand side one is present and has some minor fretwork damage. The trunk door is not warped and locks as it should. We have the key. The sides of the trunk are in good condition as is the base. The bracket feet are original. The backboards are original and in good order.
