Howitzer, 30 proofs of which this is No 14 8 x 10ins unframed After volunteering for War Service and being twice rejected on medical grounds he was at last accepted for War Service in France with Royal Marine Artillery and arrived at the River Somme at the end of October 1916. His attempts at sketching this Gun (known popularly as Granny) were met with opposition and he was reported to his superiors as such sketches were suspicious and considered to be tantamount to a spying activity. Successive Appeals at last reached General Aston, himself interested in etching, and P S was able to continue, with everyone else turning a blind eye. His sketch became the basis for etchings of the Gun

REPS A set of eight mounted colour lithographs depicting details of Diego Rivera`s murals, all signed by the artist on white mount (overall size 47.5 x 35.5cm). Blind stamped Roman numerals on upper right corner indicating plate numbers. Lot comprises one lithograph of the mural in the National Palace in Mexico City (plate number XIX), four lithographs of the murals painted in the Chapel of Agricultural School in Chapingo (plate numbers VII, VIII, IX and X) and three lithographs of the mural depicted at the Ministry of Education in Mexico City (plates I, III and VI). Signatures slightly faded, minor yellowing to mounts. These reproductions of Rivera`s murals are part of a series of 19 lithographs printed in Berlin by the Ganymede Press which were made for an exhibition held in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1933. Few sets of these prints are currently known.

Cooper (1805-92) was a Chartist imprisoned for sedition in Stafford Gaol where he wrote this poem, which is over 900 stanzas long. ""Though few read it from beginning to end, its poetic ambition impressed not only the readers of the Chartist press but also Carlyle, Disraeli, and Kingsley. The Purgatory was a vindication of Cooper`s radical beliefs ."" Oxford DNB.

printer ).- Book of Common Prayer ?, one of 500 copies printer ).- Book of Common Prayer (The)? , one of 500 copies, printed in red and black, with compliments slip of John Pierpont Morgan loosely inserted and note of receipt and another concerning the binding, light spotting and soiling to endpapers but text clean, original oxblood pigskin, ruled and stamped in blind, t.e.g., others uncut, rather rubbed, spine faded, split to upper joint, folio, Boston, printed by D.B.Updike of the Merrymount Press, 1928 [1930]. Updike`s magnum opus and one of the most beautifully-designed American books of the twentieth century. It was printed for the Joint Commission on the Revision and Enrichment of the Book of Common Prayer and financed by the banker J.P.Morgan. Updike was well-suited to printing the work being a staunch Episcopalian and familiar with the text; it took two years to produce.

Abbey Life 564], Charles Evans, 1849 The present wood-engraving, bearing a later date of 1849, as opposed to Abbey`s circa 1845, has an extended section of the panorama continuing on from the Glasgow Steam Wharf and the London Docks, to Deptford Dockyard via Shadwell, Limehouse and Greenwich; the total length being just over 18 feet, rather than the earlier 1845 engraving`s 12 feet.
