Lot 2321

(JAMES) WOOLLEY OF CODNOR (DERBYSHIRE); an 18th century oak cased eight day longcase clock, the brass dial with applied chapter ring bearing Arabic and Roman numerals with applied pierced detail depicting cherubs and crowns to the corners, the hood with blind fret panel to the cornice, raised on plinth base, height 196cm.Additional InformationComplete with pendulum and weights. The dial is approx. 28.5cm/11.22" wide. The chapter ring diameter is 26cm. There is a repair to the top of the dial (see additional images). Old worm holes to the gilt sections of the columns and with losses to the gesso. One of the carved and gilt corner blocks at the back is lacking. The door has a crack to the top. The hinges and lock are not original. The sides of the back board are later timber and other later timbers in the construction. Some losses to the blind fret of the hood at both corners. Other general age wear throughout.

A 19th century gilt wood and gesso rectangular over mantel mirror with scroll work surmount and blind fret side panels, height approx 89cm, width 112cm, together with a smaller rectangular wall mirror (2).Additional InformationThe over mantel mirror has a large blemish to the silvering at the bottom middle of the plate and with other spotting throughout the plate. The scroll detailing to the top has many chips and losses and other general wear and losses throughout. The other mirror with some greying to the mirror plate to the bottom left and general wear to the frame, there is a loss to the bottom right hand corner. The mirror plate to the rectangular wall mirror is not original.

A Russian 916 standard silver and enamel basket, with swing handle and decorated with foliate motifs against a green ground, on three ball feet, diameter 11cm, the underside stamped with an emperor's head and 916 and also with a maker's mark ‘AF?’, gross weight 198.5g.Additional InformationThe interior is grubby and will need cleaning. Traces of gilt to the underside of the handle and to the rim. There is a small blind chip in the green enamel. There is also a shallow chip to the green enamel at the upper edge. There is a small chip to a red enamel section to the left of this and a small loss to the green between this red section and the rim.

An Edwardian silver plated epergne, with fixed central trumpet and three detachable trumpets, on circular base, height approx. 27cm, with a silver plated three piece decanter stand with three cut glass decanters and stoppers, and a small collection of spoons.Additional InformationThe epergne with wear to the plate throughout, a slight tilt and a small knock to the base. The decanter stand with one of the ball feet lacking and heavily tarnished throughout, two of the decanters with blind chips to the rim, the other decanter with some small nicks to the rim. One of the stoppers is lacking much of the lower section meaning it sits lower in the collar than the other two, all stoppers with some wear and chips. Overall tired.

Genet (Jean) Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs, roman, first edition, number 118 of 350 copies, 7-line signed presentation inscription from the author incorporating the book's title, portrait of the author trimmed from magazine and laid onto title, David Diamond's copy with his blind-stamp to head of title, near-contemporary morocco-backed vellum with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover and with initials "D. D." to foot of spine, light rubbing, 4to, Monte-Carlo, au depens de l'auteur, [1942].⁂ Genet's debut novel in an attractive binding with a lengthy, poetic, almost romantic inscription likely to the composer David Diamond. Regarded as scandalous upon initial publication, Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs has since been show to have an enduring impact, influencing the figures from the Beats to musicians and the filmmaker John Waters. David Diamond (1915-2005), composer (see lot 315 also 58, 312 and 316). The inscription implies that the recipient is gay and may have at some point been a lover of Genet's. While it seems that Diamond and Genet moved in similar circles, we have been unable to establish whether the pair ever had a closer relationship.

His quotes were added to a promotional wraparound for that novel and even appear on the rear flap of the present volume. This copy was signed during a visit by Golding to see Forster at Cambridge to thank him for his favourable review. Forster asked Golding to sign the books he owned and as neither writer had a pen the writers borrowed the cha lady's pencil.

NO RESERVE Isherwood (Christopher) Kathleen and Frank, first English edition, George Cukor's copy with presentation inscription to him from the author to endpaper, plates, Cukor's bookplate to pastedown, blind-stamp of Bernie Taupin to endpaper, original cloth, dust-jacket, spine ends and corners a little chipped, chipping and creasing to head of upper panel, 8vo, Methuen & Co., 1971.⁂ A charming Hollywood provenance. George Cukor (1899-1983) director of such classic films as The Philadelphia Story, Adam's Rib, My Fair Lady and A Star is Born. He moved in similar Hollywood circles to Isherwood and Bachardy, attending their famous parties. Cukor would later set the opening of his 1981 film Rich and Famous at Isherwood and Bachardy's Santa Monica house, with the hosts both briefly appearing in the film.

McCullers (Carson) The Ballad of the Sad Café, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "For dear David [Diamond] from his loving Carson" to endpaper, ownership blind-stamp of David Diamond to title, with neat pencil notes and markings to a few margins, original cloth, slight bumping to spine ends and corners, dust-jacket, spine ends and corners a little chipped, a few very short tears and some light creasing to head and foot, light rubbing to extremities, but an excellent example overall, preserved in custom drop-back box, 8vo, Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1951.⁂ A remarkable association copy inscribed to the composer David Diamond, a crucial figure in McCullers' life, the subject of a passionate love triangle involving Carson and Reeves McCullers and the unmentioned dedicatee of the eponymous novella. David Diamond (1915-2005), American composer, first met Carson and Reeves McCullers at a party in May 1941. In his diaries from the time he reported falling immediately in love with both husband and wife and these feelings were apparently reciprocated. A passionate and loving triangular relationship then ensued although seemingly without sexual consummation, this largely dictated by Carson's own ambivalence towards sex. Though asexual the relationship was nevertheless at times tempestuous with husband and wife engaging in quarrels over Diamond. Matters came to a head when Reeves began to realise his sexual attraction towards Diamond and attempted to move in with him. The shifting of loves and affections of this complex relationship were both upsetting and hugely influential for Carson and both The Member of the Wedding and The Ballad of the Sad Café were inspired by it. In Virginia Spencer Carr's book The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers, which discusses this relationship in some detail, Carr notes several times that the novella The Ballad of the Sad Café was written by McCullers for Diamond: ""Darling, The Ballad of the Sad Café is for you," she told Diamond, to whom she knew the work would speak more directly than to anyone else.", pp.152-3 (see also pp. 171 and 208). Diamond was also the acknowledged bases for Mr Brook in Madam Zilensky and the King of Finland and his markings related to chiefly to that story along with The Sojourner and A Domestic Dilemma.
