Puerto Rico. Churruca (Cosme Damian de Churruca y Elorza), Plano Geometrico del Puerto Capital de la Isla de Puerto Rico Levantado en 1794 Por D. Cosme De Churucca Capitain de Nacio de la Rl. Armada....., 1794 [but later impression], uncoloured engraved chart of the harbour of San Juan, blind stamp of the Spanish Hydrographic Department, 455 x 605mm. An important chart of San Juan, based upon a detailed study of the harbour by the Spanish NavyÂ’s hydrographical engineers, under the command of Churruca. The chart includes general notes on the harbour, a key identifying major landmarks, an extensive note on the various shoals identified on the map, and sailing instructions for entering the harbour. The importance of this chart is underlined by the fact that it was copied by both the Depot de la Marine, William Faden and the British Hydrographical Office. Churruca had an illustrious career as an officer in the Spanish navy. Serving with distinction at the seige of Gibralter and in the Spanish colonies in the Americas. He was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar after being struck by a cannon ball. -1

* Delius (Frederick, 1862-1934). A profile portrait sketch of the composer Frederick Delius, believed to be taken from life, by the cellist Francis Peracchio, c.1929, pencil on verso of a London hotel restaurant menu, captioned Delius but unsigned, pin hole to upper edge, 26.5 x 21cm (10.5 x 8.25ins). A note in the hand of Anthony Gasson accompanies the drawing giving details; Francis Peracchio was the nephew of the recorded artist G. Peracchio and was himself a cellist, playing at the Carlton Hotel, Berkeley Hotel and at the BBC. He sketched regulars at the restaurants including Toscanini, and was the subject of many favourable comments. Delius suffered the effects of syphilis and by this time was blind and had poor mobility if not paralysis. He was reliant on his amanuesis Eric Fenby, as well as the financial support of Thomas Beecham. -1
* Rossini (Gioachino, 1792-1868). A portrait from life of the composer Rossini, circa 1828, fine and rare half-length life-size portrait, oil on canvas, depicting the composer seated at a damask covered table, holding a quill pen and with manuscript music beside him, relined by Francis Leedham (probably mid-19th century), with his blind stamp to verso of stretcher, 87 x 75cm (34.25 x 29.5ins), modern antique-style ebonised wood frame, with printed labels to verso of the Historical Portraits gallery, 31 Dover Street, London, inscribed with the number 2137 Provenance: Purchased by Anthony Gasson from Phillip Mould Historical Portraits, London, circa 2000 An important and rare unattributed portrait of Rossini in his mid-thirties, around the time of the composition of his most famous opera William Tell. In this portrait the composer appears just a little older than he does in the famous head and shoulders portrait with cap of 1820 in the collection of the International Museum and Library of Music, Bologna. The Museum also holds an oil portrait of Rossini by Pietro Bettelli from 1818 The pose in our portrait is similar to the photograph of Rossini by Leopold Ernest Mayer & Pierre-Louis Pierson, c. 1855 Francis Leedham (1794-1870) was a picture cleaner and liner active by 1831 from his premises on Little Edward Street, London. He was particularly productive for the art collector and antiquarian Lord Northwick, and later the National Gallery where he relined at least fifteen Turners. -1

Born in Naples his talent for illustration was quickly recognised by the editor on an Italian periodical. Moving to Paris in the 1920`s brought his work to the attention of The Sphere for which he produced some of his best known work including the sinking of the Titanic and his war illustrations.
