Mandela thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I still possess the Council's tie which you so graciously sent to me 6 years ago', further adding 'I wish the Wilberforce Council all the best in its endeavours and regret that I am still unable, because of the demands of office, to play and active role in the affairs of the Council'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and one line of text partially affected by the central horizontal fold, although still legible. About VG

[LINCOLN ABRAHAM]: (1809-1865) American President 1861-65. Asassinated. A small piece of light coloured wood measuring 0.5 x 2.5 inches, previously lightly mounted to an oblong 8vo sheet of notepaper although now detached, being a piece of wood removed from the site of Abraham Lincoln's home in Springfield, Illinois, the notepaper annotated in ink 'A piece of wood from Lincoln's Springfield Home' and signed by Herbert Wells Fay with an inscription dated 6thJune 1940. The notepaper also has a brown oak leaf neatly attached alongside a further annotation by Fay, 'Oak leaf from tree at Lincoln's tomb'. With blind embossed heading H. W. Fay, Custodian Lincoln's Tomb, Springfield, Illinois and blank integral leaf. G  Herbert Wells Fay (1859-1949) American Collector of Historical Portraits and Lincoln Ephemera who, in later years, was the custodian of Lincoln's tomb at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.

The partially printed document is addressed 'To all Admirals, Vice-Admirals, Captains, Commanders of His Majesty's Ships of War, or Privateers, Governors, Mayors, Sheriffs, Justices of the Peace, Constables, Customers, Comptrollers, Searchers, and all others…..' and authorises three individuals, including Monsieur Gautier and Celestin Grillon, as well as their household and two servants, with their goods and necessaries, to 'freely and quietly to go from hence to Dover or any other Port, and there to embark and pass over to Flushing without any Lett, Hindrance or Molestation whatsoever', providing that they embark within fourteen days. SOMERSET LORD CHARLES: (1767-1831) British Soldier, Politician and Colonial Administrator who served as Governor of the Cape Colony, South Africa, 1814-26. A large D.S., Charles Henry Somerset, one page, large folio, Cape of Good Hope, 13th August 1817. The partially printed document is issued by Somerset in his capacity as Governor of the Cape Colony and grants Lodewyk Herbold of Germany a Deed of Burghership of the Cape Colony, subject to the approbation of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent. Signed by Somerset at the foot above a good red wax seal and with various countersignatures and blind embossed Netherlands United East India VOCseals across the upper edge, each to the value of 50 rijksdaalders. Some neat, extensive splitting to the central folds (neatly repaired to the verso). Together with Henry Somerset (1794-1862) British Lieutenant General, son of Lord Charles Somerset. Henry Somerset served at the Battle of Waterloo and later with the Cape Mounted Rifles during the Xhosa Wars. D.S., H Somerset, one page, folio, Fort Hare, 29th April 1851. The manuscript document is a Division Order and confirms that Rev. Thomson has undertaken to take charge of the destitute, adding 'Rations will be issued upon Mr. Thomson's requisition according to the return he will send in weekly, approved by the Major General….' Some light age wear and a few minor, neat splits to the edges of the folds, about VG, 2
