A George III Chippendale style mahogany chest on chest, late 18th century, the dentil cornice above a blind fret carved frieze with two short over three long graduated drawers all between blind fret carved canted stiles, the base with three deep drawers, raised on bracket feet, 104cm by 54cm by 182cm Reasonable condition with the exception of previous handle marks visible to drawer fronts, section of timber spliced in above the largest middle drawer above lock, patch repair bottom left hand corner of bottom largest drawer, in panels which are original are variations in colour, some splits/sections of timber missing (see images), some of the blind fret-work has been replaced around the top section and sides, general repairs/strengthening work around bracket feet which original, with key for locks 231116
A mahogany eight day longcase clock, signed Fearnley, Wigan, circa 1780, swan neck pediment with inset gilt painted glass panels, blind fret border, raised quatre form panel to the base, 14-inch arched barass dial, scroll engraved centre with a seconds dial, inner date ring, moonphase in the arch and signed above, four pillar movement with a anchor escapement and striking on a bell, 244cm high 09.12.16, Hood with moulding detail missing in parts, later finials, hood with scratches and some cracks to the sides, blind fret above the trunk door with pieces missing and replaced, trunk door is bowed and cracked to the top left hand side, bottom side of the trunk door with cracks and a small piece has been spliced to the to the corner, dial is dirty and discoloured throughout, minute hand is broken, hands are rusty, movement is dirty and with rust marks to the parts, later added crutch, no pendulum and no weights.

Portrait frontis and maps. CONDITION REPORT: Binding quite worn with the spine beginning to fragment. Almost detached from text block. Capable of restoration. Textblock generally very clean and tight. Folding map at the rear is torn half-way across the central fold but with out loss. NB this is not an ex-lib copy.

(Compiler)] [Photograph Album of Regimental Colours] 4to calf stamped in blind and gilt-lettered 'Britain's Pride' to red spine label, containing approx. 110 tipped-in 19th century b&w and sepia photographs of British army colours and standards, some featuring soldiers on parade etc, including in India and at Portsmouth in 1888. 194 leaves numbered in pencil (several blanks), ink mss. verse from Byron's Corsair to first leaf, two photographs in old transparent pocket loosely inserted. Very rubbed and scuffed, with frayed spine hinges, lacking clasps, viewing highly recommended. This album was part of lot 489 at a Sotheby's sale of 12/07/55 (cutting from the sale catalogue pasted to first leaf). A note above the list of contents written by a former owner speculates that it once belonged to Capt. Oakes-James, and that some of the photographs were reproduced in Milne's book, offered with this lot. IMPORTANT VICTORIAN AUTOGRAPH ALBUM [Bennett Family (Compiled by)] Small folio album (320 x 205mm) of approx. 200 Autograph Letters Signed, 1830s to early 20th century, mostly addressed to Sir James Risdon Bennett (1809-1891), President of the Royal College of Physicians; some to his wife and family. Early 20th century diced brown morocco, red letterpiece to spine with 'Autographs' in gilt (some edge ware only). Mostly private correspondence and notes, accepting or declining invitations etc., some evidently originally enclosed with books or other documents, the majority 1860s to 1880s; some of the most prominent personalities of the Victorian age are represented - including statesmen, politicians, doctors and physicians, (mostly non-conformist) clergymen, missionaries, travellers, artists, literary figures, journalists, and men and women of letters. Some one sheet folded so pp.4, all pasted to guards or onto approx. 83 album pages (blank pages to rear), various writing papers (some printed headers, some coloured), cards, some slips and fragments. The papers and manuscript well preserved and clearly legible in almost all examples. A late Victorian mahogany and walnut mirror back sideboard, the upper section with a three part glass headed by a blind fret cornice and flanked by polished columns, above a serpentine sub section with a further blind fret panelling and two curved drawers flanked by cupboards, on squat cabriole legs with ball and claw feet, 185cm high, 183cm wide, 63cm deep.

A mahogany partners desk, in George III style, the rectangular top with a green leather insert, canted corners, above an arrangement of nine drawers to one side, three to the reverse, with two panelled doors, each flanked by blind fret canted corners, on ogee bracket feet, the top 90cm x 151cm.
An impressive large Edwardian mahogany Chippendale style display cabinet on stand in the Chinese style. The large cabinet having a pierced, fret and lattice worked pagoda pediment with blind fret work decoration elsewhere, Astragal glazed doors each with bevelled glass panel work, mirror lined interiors. All raised on cabriole legs with lion paw feet.
A William III ebonised bracket clock, Benjamin Merriman, London, the silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, within a gilt frame with cast putti corners, date window within, blind fretwork mounts, the cushion domed lid similarly reticulated with S scroll handle above, the back plate incised and engraved with foliate scroll decoration and signed Ben Merriman, London, 40cm high

Wells informs his correspondent 'I regret very much that I am unable to make any suggestions about your articles. I am really quite an ostrich as regards journalism. All I know of the [unknown word] I get from Barrie's book 'When a Man's Single'..' With very minor age related wear, otherwise VGSpade House, a large mansion overlooking Sandgate, near Folkestone, in southeast England. The home H. G. Wells from 1901 to 1909. H.S.L. MILCH ERHARD: (1892-1972) German Field Marshal and Air Inspector General during World War II. D.S., Milch, one page, folio, Berlin, 7th February 1939, in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, appoints Friedrich Scheller to be a Superintending Technical Inspector working within the Civil Service of the Reich and states, in part, 'I ratify this document in the expectation that the person named in it will fulfil his oath of service loyally and the duties of his post conscientiously, and will justify the confidence shown in him by this nomination. At the same time he may be assured of the special protection of the Fuehrer and Reichchancellor'. Signed by Milch at the conclusion in his capacity as Reich Minister for Aviation alongside a blind embossed seal. BLOMBERG WERNER VON: (1878-1946) German Field Marshal General of World War II, the first Generalfeldmarschall appointed by Hitler. D.S., v. Blomberg, one page, 4to, Berlin, 2nd August 1936, in German. The partially printed document, completed in sutterlin script, appoints Lieutenant Wolfgang Lorenz of the 3rd Pioneer Battalion to be a Senior Lieutenant with effect from 1st April 1934. Signed by Blomberg at the foot in his capacity as Reich Minister of Defence. With a blind embossed seal featuring the Imperial Eagle. Very minor light creasing and central horizontal fold. VG
VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. A.L.S., The Queen, in the third person, one page, 8vo, Windsor Castle, 12th September 1837, n.p. [Lord John Russell], on stationery featuring a blind embossed 'VR' crest. The Queen writes, in full, 'The Queen has just received Lord John Russell's communication with respect to Mr. Cobbett and highly approves the course he intends to pursue on this subject'. On the verso is reads '1837 Sept 12 The Queen'. With blank integral leaf. Very minor tears in three places to the folds at the foot of the page, otherwise, VGLord John Russell (1792-1878) British Prime Minister 1846-52, 1865-66.
ELIZABETH II: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . D.S., Elizabeth R, as Queen, at the head, one page, oblong folio, Court of Saint James, 2nd November 1960. The partially printed document approves the appointment made by the President of the Republic of Ecuador for Mr. Frank Bottrill to be Consul at Nassau, Bahamas and allows Bottrill 'all the Privilages, Immunities and Advantages' belonging to his post. Countersigned at the foot by Alec Douglas-Home (1903-1995) British Prime Minister 1963-64, Foreign Secretary 1960-63, 1970-74. With blind embossed seal at the head. The signature of the Queen is very slightly faded, although perfectly legible. Some age wear at the folds and with slight traces of former mounting to the verso. About VG
