Each appears hand made, with fibreglass constructed heads and all are hand painted. Comprising, we believe, of the following characters; Mr Punch, Judy, Baby, Constable, Joey the Clown, Crocodile, Skeleton, The Doctor, the Lawyer, Hector the Horse, Servant, Devil & the Blind Man. Also included is a hangman's noose, and various sticks - likely for supporting the puppets during use. All with original costumes. Provenance unknown. The average height of a puppet being approx; 48cm. A wonderful piece of nostalgia.

Australasia.- Australia.- Stokes (John Lort) Discoveries in Australia; with an Account of the Coasts and Rivers explored and surveyed during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle in the Years 1837-38-39-40-41-42-43, 2 vol., first edition, 26 engraved or lithographed plates including 11 of natural history, 8 folding engraved maps, 6 in pockets at front, one with route supplied in red, illustrations, errata leaf in vol.1, with advertisement slip for Eyre's Central Australia' tipped into vol.2 but without that of Dutton in vol.1, advertisements tipped to endpapers at beginning and end of each vol.(some varying to those in Wantrup), light foxing and browning, M1 in vol.1 creased, ink signature of ?Willm. Beauchamp Proctor on front pastedowns, first issue binding of original blue ribbed cloth with elaborate grecian borders stamped in blind, spines gilt with kangaroos and emus at foot, rubbed, light stains to upper cover of vol.2, spines faded and worn at head and foot, corners bumped and worn, [Ferguson 4406; Wantrup 89a], 8vo, 1846.⁂ John Lort Stokes served on H.M.S.Beagle from 1824-41, from midshipman to commander, including the famous voyage of 1831-36 with Charles Darwin on board. This work of 1846 describes the completion of the survey of the coast of Australia including the Torres and Bass Straits and the approaches to Adelaide and the Swan River near Perth. The expedition also discovered new rivers in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the north-west coast.

Africa.- Burton (Sir Richard Francis) Wit and Wisdom in West Africa; or, a Book of Proverbial Philosophy, Idioms, Enigmas, and Laconisms, first edition, half-title (small nick to upper edge), light spotting at beginning and end, ex-library copy with stamp on title and label with borrowing details on front pastedown, variant binding of original orange-brown cloth with blind-stamped border on boards and spine titled as usual but with gilt-stamped illustration of negro at foot, a little rubbed, spine faded, library label pasted on upper cover and small sticker at foot of spine, [Penzer 75], 8vo, 1865.⁂ Important work on West African languages with the information recorded in printed form for the first time.According to Penzer the first issue binding is in red cloth with blind-stamped border and no illustration on spine; the second issue or "remaindered" binding is in plum cloth with the spine titled "Negro Wit and Wisdom" and illustration at foot. This copy appears to be a mixture of the two.

Africa.- Smith (Andrew) Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa, 5 vol., first edition, 279 lithographed plates, all but 12 hand-coloured, some heightened with gum arabic, tissue guards, without the errata slips, very occasional foxing but generally clean (mostly to plates of beetles), Lord Lilford's copy with his ink signature on front pastedowns, also that of Richard Liversidge, original blind-stamped green cloth, rubbed, spines slightly faded, some wear to joints and spine ends, preserved in 3 modern cloth drop-back boxes with roan labels, [Mendelssohn II p.327; Nissen IVB 880 & ZBI 3868], 4to, [1838]-49-[50]. ⁂ A complete set of the first edition of one of South Africa's premier colour plate books: "a handsome and valuable work", giving "full particulars of the natural history subjects of South Africa collected by...Smith's expedition." (Mendelssohn). George Henry Ford (1809-1876) was the expedition member responsible for the majority of the original drawings and he also executed the corresponding plates. The breakdown of plates is as follows: Aves: 114 plates; Reptilia: 78 plates (3 uncoloured); Invertebrae: 4 plates; Mammalia: 52 plates (numbered 1-53, with additional plate 8 and plates 18 & 37 never published, 4 uncoloured); Pisces: 31 plates (5 uncoloured). Thomas Powys (1833-96, 4th Baron Lilford), ornithologist and author of Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands published in 7 volumes in 1891. Richard Liversidge (1926-2003), South African ornithologist and Director of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley.

Comprising two letters concerning the hot springs at Rykum and Haukadal from Stanley to Black, and an analysis of the waters by Black, all papers read before the Royal Society of Edinburgh on November 7th 1791, April 30th 1792 and July 4th 1791 respectively.

June 1915" on front free endpaper, bookplates of Walter Harold Wilkin and James Stevens Cox, worming to hinges, contemporary russia with borders in blind, by C.Hering with his ticket, g.e., a little rubbed and damp-stained, rebacked and recornered in morocco, [W & S p. 28; Schwerdt I p. 63], small folio, 1810.⁂ Facsimile of the first English work to include the earliest printed illustration of a fisherman and passages of veterinary interest, the earliest book printed in English relating to falconry, and the first work in England to use colour printing.William Baillie Grohman (1851-1921), Anglo-Austrian author on hunting and big game hunter. He assembled a large library on hunting and a vast collection of sporting art.

Africa.- Allen (Capt. William) and T.R.H.Thomson. A Narrative of the Expedition...to the River Niger, in 1841, 2 vol., first edition, engraved portrait and 15 plates, one folding, 2 folding engraved maps, one hand-coloured in outline, hand-coloured cross-section, 3 wood-engraved plates and several illustrations, with loosely-inserted 2pp. manuscript notes in contemporary hand from the journal of one on board (short tear to one edge), some light foxing to plates and at beginning and ends, vol.1 lacking front free endpaper, vol.2 upper hinge broken with first few leaves loose, original blind-stamped cloth, rubbed, spines faded, 8vo, 1848.⁂ The notes relate to time spent at the mouth of the River Nun, near Brass Town, and the possibility of trading for palm oil: "18th Augt. 1841 - Today a son of King William who lives at Brass & a son...King Boy of Brass came on board" to deliver two sheep as a present from King Boy and his brother King William. King Boy's message was that "there is plenty of oil at Brass... he is at present making Juju else he would come himself today but he wishes the ship to wait three days...as he is very desirous to talk to the Captain...". The notes continue that King Boy "would rather sell oil than men" and give details of his canoes, trade, feasts (denying that there are any human sacrifices), his son known as "Jack Fire" and that he has 120 wives and King William only 45. A great deal of the information appears in the published work at pp.170-172 although in print Boy has "one hundred and forty wives".
