Early 19th Century Gold Inlaid Quality Khyber Knife. A rare good quality example. The single edged Yataghan blade with rear edge fullers. The blade profusely inlaid with gold floral and script panels, leading to the forte. The ferrule again decorated with gold kufgari work, leading onto the grip side frame. Slab ivory grips with figured decoration and secured by three steel rivets. Complete with original blind tooled leather decorated wooden scabbard. Fitted with small copper chape. Overall GC with slight damage to leather covering of scabbard and wear to grip, kufgari work remains bright.

Scheubel was Professor of Mathematics at Tübingen and a leading Euclidian scholar of the Renaissance. Staigmuller in his biography of Scheubel considers the prefatory essay to this edition to be his masterpiece. Its importance is reflected in its separate publication a year later. The presentation inscription on the title reads `Ex dono D. Joannis Scheubeli [obliterated line] 1550`.

This version was first published as a facsimile plate in Le Parnasse Satyrique (Brussels 1864) on one folio sheet whereas in this copy it is on two 8vo pp. The two versions are otherwise virtually identical including corrections and underlinings of words and letters. The other manuscript material seems to be in other hands and together the volume forms a complete collection of all Baudelaire`s poetry available up to 1864 perhaps prepared by Baudelaire himself or his publisher Poulet-Malassis.
