A fine 18th century longcase clock by Joshua Hewlett, Bristol. The English 8-day movement, 8-bell quarter chiming and 9th bell for hours, flat silvered, engraved brass dial, Roman numerals to chapter ring, subsidiary Arabic minutes, with moon phase, tide dial to arch, blued steel hands and mahogany case with blind fretting. CONDITION REPORT: There is a split to the lower case which has gone all the way through the panel, splitting it in two. There are natural cracks forming to parts of the clock including the door escutcheon, sides of hood etc. There is a section of moulding detached from the right side of the case beneath the hood, the piece is present. There is another thinner strip of moulding beneath this which is missing. There are old repairs and some small losses to the fretwork and dentil moulding around the hood. There is some old worm damage visible to the back of the hood. The movement appears to have been refurbished at some point with modern nylon strings added. There is no winding key present. This has not been tested within the saleroom. This is 254cm high by 55cm wide by 29cm deep. See images.

A mid-Victorian ink manuscript diary, from 5th April 1872 to 19th June 1875, a day-to-day record of a fairly genteel life, including notes of reading, painting, letter-writing, enjoying the garden, and frequent "another nice day", occasional blights such as 9th January 1873, "I have a violent attack of diarrhoea, but I walk up to the Grange" (a frequent destination in the journal), unfortunately there are no categorical clues as to the identity of the author, however there are many references to the Bank and one tipped-in entry is written on Midland Banking Company, Stamford writing-paper, the handwriting varies in legibility and pace throughout, so the contents may reward a patient eye, interleaved with pink blotting leaves throughout, contemporary pink calf, blind-ruled and diced, all-edges red, 8vo, [1]
