A Chinese Chippendale style side chair, 20th century with lacquered panel to back, loose cushion and cane seat raised on moulded blind fretwork legs. Height 99 cm, width across seat 53 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. It is in generally good condition and of good colour. The front top edge of the arched back is rubbed and bruised with small losses to the polish and timber. It is slightly rough to touch. The back is in good order as are the stiles. The bergere seat beneath the cushion is in good condition. All fretwork corner spandrels are present. The legs are all in good order as are the stretchers. The only real blemish is to the front edge of the top rail as stated.

Brazil/Pernambuco -- Photographer: Théophile Auguste Stahl (1828-1877) and Adolpho Schmidt. Views of Recife and surroundings. Mid-1850s. 5 albumen prints, 3 oval and 2 with rounded corners. Each circa 21,5 x 17 cm. Each mounted to board (slightly soiled), each with photographer's blindstamp on the mount.Théophile Auguste Stahl is considered one of the most important photographers working in Brazil in the 19th century and his photographs are known for their high technical and aesthetic quality. Born in Italy, he arrived in Brazil in 1853 and settled in the city of Recife, where he opened a total of three studios. One of these large studios in rua Nova can be seen on a photo offered here on which probably both owners can be seen. In 1858, he teamed up with the photographer and chemist Adolpho Schmidt and the Hamburg painter Germano Wahnschaffe. The photographer's blind stamp shows the joint company, which existed until 1861. – Some retouched spots, otherwise in good condition.Lit.: Gilberto Ferrez/Weston J. Naef. Questions of disarmament and general economic matters, such as reparations were discussed. A visit to the Pope was also planned. The type 3 versos indicate this is an early reissue of a first series deck. The fairy tales or nursery rhymes depicted are: Hey Diddle Diddle, A Frog He Would A Wooing Go, There Was An Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe, Three Blind Mice, Cinderella, The Three Bears, Dick Whittington, Little Red Riding Hood.
