Agricola Bibl. 704. - BL 990.a.3.(1.). - Hoover Collection no. 16. - Nicht in Ward/Carozzi. - VD17 14: 643489P. - Angebunden: Ders. De Animantibus subterraneis liber. Hactenus a multis desuderatus, nunc vero in gratiam studiosorum seorsim editus, in certa capita divisus, capitum argumentis & nonnullis marginalibus exornatus. A Johanne Sigfrido. Wittebergae, Typis Meisnerianis, Impensis Zachariae Schureri, 1614. 7 Bll., 1 w. Bl., 80 S., 7 Bll. Rare selected works of the German physician, mineralogist and mining expert Georg Agricola (1494-1555). This (third Latin) edition of "De Ortu" was compiled and edited by the German physician Johann Sigfrid (1556-1632), who renumbered most of the sections and simplified the text from Agricola's original text for use in lectures at the University of Helmstedt. He also supplemented the Agricola texts with Georg Fabricius' work on metals from 1565. - Contemporary vellum with blind tooled fillets (closing bands missing). - Bound with: Id. De Animantibus subterraneis liber ... - Agricola's short treatise "De Animantibus" on the animals found in the subsurface, first published in 1549, is a compendium of what Greek, Latin and medieval authorities wrote about these animals. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Agricola supplemented these writings with his own observations and questioned the existence of some of the imaginary animals described by his predecessors. Of particular interest to palaeontologists and zoologists is an index at the end of the book in which Agricola groups the animals according to their mode of locomotion and occasionally uses binomials, thus following in the footsteps of some contemporary herbalists. - Agricola studied medicine and chemistry in Bologna, Venice and Padua from 1518 to 1522. He then taught classical philology at the city school in Zwickau, Saxony. In 1527 he moved to Jáchymov in Czechoslovakia, where he opened a medical practice. Here, where mining in the area influenced his daily life, Agricola began to study mining techniques and mineralogy. After an appointment as official historian of the Principality of Saxony in 1533, which came with an annual stipend, Agricola moved again. He moved his medical practice to Chemnitz in Saxony. There he became involved in civic affairs, which led to his being elected mayor of the city several times. Agricola was one of the outstanding scientists of his time. His texts on the diseases of miners were innovative for the time, and for his work on mining and mineralogy he was called the "father of mineralogy" by none other than Abraham Gottlob Werner. - With mounted engraved coat-of-arms bookplate of the library of Antoine Lavoisier. - Browned due to paper, 1st title page with restoration in lower margin, occasionally slightly spotted, otherwise overall well preserved.

Kirchengesanng Teutsch und Lateinisch. In allen Christlichen versamlungen gebreuchlich. Mit Titel in Rot u. Schwarz, allegorischer Holzschnitt-TVignette, Holzschnitt-Noten mit -Initialen, einem 1559 dat. ganzs. Wappen-Holzschnitt von Virgil Solis. Nürnberg, (Johann vom Berg u. Ulrich Neuber), 1560. CXIX, 3 Bl. 4°. Schweinsldr. d. - 2 weitere Lieder in zeitgenöss. Wurmsour, tls. feuchtigkeitsrandig, sonst insg. gut erhalten. With title printed in red and black and allegorical central woodcut, full-page armorial woodcut by Virgil Solis, dated 1559, at end. Contemp. blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards with two clasps, upper cover with 4 metal corner pieces and one central (those to the rear cover removed, and with a small section of restored pigskin). - The second known copy of this finely crafted printing of German chorales and Latin hymns, with the printed text considerably revised from the 1557 edition, the only earlier printing. Included are 84 German chorales, including 31 by Luther, and 64 Latin hymns, including the four-part Magnificat. While the printed notes are identical to those of the Nuremberg edition of 1557 (VD 16 P 2273), it is quite interesting to note that the emphases of the hymn texts have been heavily revised, apparently to more accurately reflect the intended intonation and to provide better guidance for the Christian worshipper. - Martin Luther (1483-1548) not only reformed the church, but also discovered the power of music as a songwriter and composer. His chorales gave churchgoers a voice and helped spread the ideas of the Reformation. Catchy melodies and easy-to-memorise verses were an ideal combination at a time when most people could read neither texts nor music. When Luther reformed the liturgy, he gave new importance to the sermon and congregational singing, and so-called choral singing was defined as a confession of faith and spiritual commentary on biblical texts (see 'On the Order of Worship in the Congregation' of 1523). - 2 further songs in contemp. ms. on the back endpaper (backings in the margins). - Inside cover with bookplate of the composer Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) and mounted bibliogr. information, some leaves with small marginal tears, somewhat finger- and foxstained, the last leaves with small wormholes, some dampstains, otherwise in overall good condition.
