Lot 9

A Distinguished Service Cross (George VI GRI), awarded to Sub Lieutenant David James Robertson Harvey R.N.V.R., Fleet Air Arm, the reverse with hallmark for London 1942, and engraved with the inscription "For Bravery, Skill and Determination in air operations while serving in H.M.S. Victorious. Sub.Lieu.(A) D.J.R.Harvey, R.N.V.R. 20th May 1942, in case of issue, together with an obituary clipping and letter from his brother. **Sub Lieutenant Harvey was the navigator of a plane flown by a pilot who became night blind. The pilot managed to land the plane successfully on the aircraft carrier solely by verbal instructions from Sub Lieutenant Harvey, for which actions he received the award. He was sadly lost overboard six months later.

Lumsden” and with old ink stamp of Clova House contemporary olive straight-grain morocco with elaborate borders in gilt and blind spine gilt in compartments with five raised bands g.e. a little rubbed (mostly at edges) one or two scratches [Great Flower Books p.81; Nissen BBI 244] 4to 1817. *** The first quarto edition with a new series of plates and text. For this reduced format edition Brookshaw narrowed his focus to 15 types of fruit and re-engraved the 60 plates (reduced from 90 in the folio edition). The present work is devoted to the strawberry raspberry currant gooseberry cherry plum apricot peach nectarine grape melon fig nut pear and apple. An index in Vol. II gives the location of each specimen many of them found in London. Clova House Aberdeenshire home of the Lumsden family.
