Barker (George) A comprehensive collection of first editions, comprising 35 items of poetry, 3 novels, 1 play and 3 other items, some items are inscribed or signed, overall very good condition, v.s., 1932. (42) *** "According to T.S. Eliot, the poet and author George Granville Barker (1913-1991) was a "very peculiar fellow". Eliot accepted Barker`s second volume of poetry for Faber and Faber in 1935 and offered necessary support. Barker`s first volume, Thirty Preliminary Poems, had been published by the Parton Press, run by David Archer at the Parton Street bookshop in Bloomsbury. Encouraged by Eliot and praised by W.B. Yeats, Barker was only in his twenties when he rose to prominence. Throughout the 1930s he tried to find a unique voice and to mark his position as a poet. The unsettling circumstances of the war, and arguably his own personality and emotional involvements, proved disruptive to his creativity. Barker moved from Japan to Canada, from California to New York and back to London. He formed a close relationship with the Canadian writer Elizabeth Smart whose point of view is conveyed in her 1945 poetic novel, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. The fifties and sixties appear to be chacterised by Barker`s erratic living arrangements. Barker wrote poetry and prose including the Guinness prize winner, View from a Blind I (1962), and fathered yet more children. Barker would finally settle down with the Scottish writer Elspeth Langlands and most of his later work is marked by an elegiac and meditative stance as well as an expressive delight in family life. Arguably, Barker`s inconsistencies mar his position as a poet which remains somewhat controversial." R.Fraser, The Chameleon Poet, 2001.
