A GEORGE III IRISH SNUFF BOX in the form of a book with bright cut engraved decoration, the spine inscribed "FOOTS WORKS", Dublin 1795, mark of Alexander Ticknell (4ozs). 8.5 x 5.2cm Lundy Foot (1735-1805) was a famous Dublin tobacconist and snuff maker. He established his business "Lundy Foot & Co." in 1758 on a street called Blind Alley until in 1774 they re-located to a corner building in Parliament Street now "M. Roche & Co. Solicitors". It was a thriving family run business and one writer claimed "in 1800, Lundy Foot`s snuff was as famous in Dublin as Guinness is today". Lundy Foot had two sons, Jeffrey and Lundy Jr. He bought land in Orlagh and the land was left to Lundy Jr. who became a high profile barrister and built the house on the site. His eldest son Jeffrey went on to run the family business with his father and he lived in Hollymount which is now Columba`s College, Whitechurch, Dublin. The business stayed in the family until the latter part of the 19th century when it was bought out by PJ Carroll but the name remained the same and could be seen on the premises until the building was refurbished in 1998
