Wyse (Right Hon. Sir Thomas). An Excursion in the Peloponnesus in the Year 1858 ... edited by his niece, Winifrede M. Sir Thomas Wyse (1791-1862) was a distinguished anglo-Irish politician, diplomat, linguist and travel writer. He was appointed ambassador to Athens in 1849 and from then on devoted himself to Greek affairs. Wyse travelled throughout Greece to gather information on the economic and social conditions of the Peloponnesus and recorded his experience in a remarkable series of journals. He fell ill before the work had been published but he spent his final days correcting the manuscript, which he then bequeathed to his niece who had it published posthumousley. (1)
