By the mid-1840s Molyneux had won the first place in the Premium Trials three times, a competition instituted by the Board of Longitude to encourage makers to introduce improvements to chronometers, and his products were used by the British Navy. Although the major part of Molyneux’s business was concerned with watches and chronometers, he also made longcase regulators and some bracket clocks, like the example in this lot.

An early 19th century oak longcase clock, with painted dial and two train striking movement and with three quarter length trunk door and conforming base raised on splayed bracket feet. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is generally very clean. The only issue with the hood is that the glass is cracked. The painted dial is a little rubbed in places but is in generally reasonably good condition. We have two weights and a pendulum. We have not had the clock ticking, however if weight is applied to the going train it appears to operate. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case are in good order. The base panel has a shrinkage crack between the two boards that form the front. The front left bracket foot is partially missing. The backboards are original.
