W. Turner of Aston, an oak grandmother clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the associated round brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, decorative half-hour markings and the maker's name W. Turner, Aston Fecit, with engraved decoration to the centre and decorative brass hands, the flat-top oak case having a break-arch trunk door, turned hood pillars and standing on bracket feet, height 156cm.
Joshua Brace, Lydney, a moonphase longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and outer Arabic five-minute numerals, the matted dial centre with subsidiary seconds dial, engraved decorative surround to the date aperture, and engraved to a silvered name plate with the maker's name Joshua Brace, Lydney, the corners with cast-brass urn spandrels, the arch having a moonphase disc with date and time markings, with the silvered arched surround engraved High Water at Bristol Key, the mahogany case with typical Bristol cresting to the hood, wavy-edge moulding to the hood door, shaped inlaid stringing to the base and trunk door, canted corners, fluted wood pillars to the hood with cast-brass Corinthian capitals and surmounted by a brass eagle-and-ball finial, standing on bracket feet, height 225cm (inc. finial) * Biography Joshua Brace is first recorded as working in Chepstow from 1752 until 1763 having originally been from Martley in Worcestershire where he had been apprenticed to Richard Munkland, a gunsmith and clockmaker. He then moved along the River Severn to Lydney in Gloucestershire prior to 1780.
An early 18th Century burr walnut veneer and feather banded escritoire:, with a moulded cornice and cushion frieze drawer inlaid with a stellar medallion enclosing a fitted interior with an arrangement of small drawers about a central enclosed cupboard with secret compartment and with an open compartment below, the lower part containing two short and two long drawers, on later splayed bracket feet, 113cm (3ft 8 1/2in) wide, 171cm (5ft 7 1/4in) high.
A George III mahogany rectangular chest:, the top with a moulded edge, fitted with a brushing slide and containing two short and three long drawers below with attractive oval brass escutcheons and drop handles, each decorated with a central basket of flowers and foliage within spiral ribbon and flowerhead surrounds on bracket feet, 88cm (2ft 10 1/2in) wide.
A George III mahogany and inlaid linen press:, the upper part with a moulded dentil cornice, fitted with sliding trays, enclosed by a pair of banded, boxwood and chequer feather strung doors with central oval satinwood ground floral foliate medallions and radiating sun spandrels, the lower part containing two short and two long drawers, on ogee bracket feet, 131cm (4ft 3 1/2in) wide, 195cm (6ft 4 3/4in) high. *Provenance Rockbeare Manor, Exeter, Devon.
A George IV mahogany and inlaid secretaire bookcase:, the upper part with a moulded dentil cornice, fitted with adjustable shelves enclosed by a pair of rosewood crossbanded and circular glazed panel doors, the lower part in two sections, having a fall with oval crossbanded and strung panels enclosing a chequer inlaid fitted interior with small drawers and pigeon holes about a central enclosed cupboard, containing three long drawers below, on bracket feet, 110.5cm (3ft 7 1/2in) wide, 254cm (8ft 4in) high.
An early 19th Century mahogany domed trunk-shaped cellarette cabinet:, the crossbanded hinged top enclosing a fitted and baize lined interior with twelve divisions, having brass carrying handles to the sides, the cupboard below enclosed by a pair of moulded panel doors on bracket feet, 47cm (1ft 6/12in) wide, 85cm (2ft 9 1/2in) high.
A 19th Century mahogany upright bookcase:, the upper part with a moulded cornice, enclosed by an astragal glazed panel door between reeded uprights, the lower part with pigeon holes and shelf enclosed by a crossbanded moulded panel door on bracket feet, 80cm (2ft 7 1/2in) wide, 242.5cm (7ft 11 1/2in) high.
An Edwardian mahogany and inlaid bow-fronted standing corner display cabinet:, bordered with boxwood and ebony lines, the upper part with a moulded and inlaid dentil cornice and frieze with central panel of ribbon tied husk garlands, enclosed by a pair of glazed panel doors, the lower part with frieze drawer decorated with scrolling foliate designs, enclosed by a pair of satinwood crossbanded doors below decorated with oval lines, on splayed bracket feet, 94cm (3ft 1in) across.
A ship’s brass bell from the screw steamer “Skipton Castle”, incised name, the letters painted black/red, diameter 11½”, with clapper, mounted on an old wooden wall bracket; the ship was built in 1907 for the Lancashire Shipping Co, sold to a Greek company in 1928 and renamed “Prionas”, broken up in 1932.
