Los 1237

A 19th century mahogany longcase clock, with arched hood, painted dial with Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and two-train striking movement, the base raised on splayed bracket feet. Height 84.5 ins.

Los 1243

A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock by John Stancliffe, with swans neck pediment above the arched brass dial, with eight day movement, moon phase, date aperture, subsidiary seconds dial, silvered chapter ring and Roman numerals, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals, with long trunk door beneath and with conforming base raised on ogee bracket feet. Height 91 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock maybe a marriage. The cheeks have not been built up however they may have been completely replaced at some point. The mask around the top of the arch is in two pieces which is also not usual. Having said this the fit around the dial is good and the clock does not look like a marriage from the outside and may well not be. The case is in generally good condition. The hood is in good order. The door is in good condition and not warped. The clock appears to be ticking away as it should and appears to be striking also. There are some minor losses to the blind fretwork around the collar above the door. The trunk door is flat and not warped and the case base is in very good condition. The bracket feet are original and in good order also.

Los 1249

A 19th century mahogany tallboy, satinwood crossbanded, boxwood and ebony strung and with triangular pediment above a moulded dentil cornice, the top half with two short and three long graduated drawers, the base with three further graduated drawers and all raised on bracket feet. Width 43.5 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This piece is stamped Edwards & Roberts. We think that the dark patches are areas of stain which have been applied a long time ago over hairline cracks to the veneer on the drawer fronts. There is evidence of this on the top left hand drawer, drawer two, drawer four, five & six and also some marks to the sides of the piece. If the top left hand small drawer is anything to go by the small line of stain on the right hand side simply appears to cover a very fine hairline crack to the timber. The marks are certainly a little odd and surprising considering the general condition of the piece which is very good.

Los 1254

An Edwardian mahogany grandmother clock, in the George III style, with three-train fusee musical movement, eight bells, four gongs and strike gong, with both Westminster and Eight Bells chime, with moon phase to the arch, face width 9 ins, with long trunk door beneath flanked by quarter column corners and raised on splayed bracket feet. CONDITION REPORT: The height to the top of the finial is 86.5 ins. Width across the bottom of the hood 15 ins. Depth at deepest point 9 ins. The case is in generally very good condition and does not require any repair or restoration. The trunk door is not warped and there are no serious splits, cracks or significant problems with the case. The only cracks in evidence are on the left and the right hand side returns of the top of the pagoda hood. These are simply stress fractures and in our opinion fairly insignificant. The clock is triple fusee and is currently ticking away. The movement is a little dirty and does wind on all three trains. The movement does strike and chime when operated manually by moving the pointers, this is a little sporadic because the movement does need cleaning. As stated as far as we can tell the only real issue is that the movement requires a clean and lubrication.

Los 1269

There are no significant splits or losses. All drawer fronts are in good condition and all cockbeading is present. The brass drop handles are likely to be later replacements but they do go through the original handle holes so there are no issues behind the drawer fronts. The sides of the piece are in generally good order and the backboards are original. The bracket feet are original and in good condition also.

Los 1282

A George III style mahogany chest of drawers, circa 1910, with moulded edge above four long graduated drawers with brass drop handles and cockbeading and raised on bracket feet. Width 25.5 ins.

Width at cornice 44.5 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This chest on chest is in generally very good condition. The cornice is in good order as is the frieze beneath. The sides of the top half are in good condition with no splits. The handles are later replacements which cover the original handle holes. One handle has the circular brass drop missing. This is to the second drawer down. All drawer fronts are in good condition with no significant damage. The sides of the base are in good order. The bracket feet are original. The front left bracket foot has had a repair to the bottom half and the crack is visible on our image. The backboards are original.

Los 1322

A George III longcase clock by Hugh Lough of Penrith, with thirty hour movement, moulded dentil cornice above the 11 inch square brass dial inscribed "Elizabeth Thompson, Dacre 1784", with date aperture, Roman numerals and silvered chapter ring, with long trunk door and raised on bracket feet. Height 75 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We do not think that this clock is a marriage even through the construction below the seatboard is a little strange. The case and movement are certainly of the correct period and the case is very similar to other Lough clocks that we have seen. The dial fits the mask very well. The case is in very good order generally. The hood has only one problem, namely a cracked glass. Below the hood there is some of the dentil work missing, approximately 2 ins on the right hand return and 1 inch on the left. The remainder of the case is in very good condition. The clock is currently ticking away and striking as it should.

Los 1333

A George III mahogany kneehole desk, with moulded edge, frieze drawer, recessed cupboard, three further short drawers to either side and the whole raised on bracket feet. Width 32.5 ins (see illustration).

Los 1339

A good George III "Bewcastle" type inlaid oak press cupboard, in two stages, the upper stage with moulded cornice and plain frieze inlaid with nine star motifs above three crossbanded and elliptically strung rectangular panelled doors and one short drawer, the base having an arrangement of four false drawers, three medium and two long graduated drawers all with brass bale handles and raised above a shaped apron on bracket feet. Width 69 ins, depth 22 ins, height 84 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The image of the Bewcastle press and the dimensions in the printed catalogue are incorrect. The press that we are selling is of an almost identical design to the one illustrated and is of a similar colour but in our opinion in a little better condition. The correct dimensions are: width across the cornice 72 ins. The cornice is detachable and the width across the top of the cupboard is 67 ins. The height of the upper section of the cupboard excluding the cornice is 47.54 ins. Depth of cupboard at the cornice is 24 ins. The overall height of the piece is 84 ins. The condition is generally very good, the cornice is in good order, all of the moulding beneath the cornice is present but a little scuffed on the returns. The three doors are not warped and have their original handles which are stamped "Webb & Greenway, Registered 1462". The brass drop handles to all drawers appear to be original and all present. The cockbeading to the drawer fronts is principally complete with only very minor losses. The most evident loss is to the centre right middle drawer which has one section of the upright cockbeading missing. The sides of the piece are a little dirty and have some paint flecks, there are however no cracks and no damage. The bracket feet are original and in generally good condition. The interior of the cupboard is in generally good order. The piece only really needs a light clean.

A Victorian mahogany partners desk, with gilt tooled writing surface and fitted with three frieze drawers to either side and with three drawers and cupboard to each pedestal, raised on bracket feet. Width 60 ins, depth 37 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This desk is in extremely good condition. The tooled leather writing surface is in generally very good order with only minor rubbing to the gilding. The remainder of the top is in good condition. All of the drawers run smoothly and all handles and cockbeading are present. The sides of the piece are in good condition and the cupboards and drawers to the opposite side also operate as they should. There are scuffs to the bracket feet as one would expect. The piece could be used or resold in its current condition without the need for any repair or restoration.

Width 50 ins. CONDITION REPORT: The secretaire chest is in reasonable condition but does require some restoration. The top right hand corner of the cornice has some veneer damage. The upper doors do not quite meet in the centre. This could be rectified by slightly moving the brass edging strip. The doors are slightly but not significantly warped. The left hand return moulding has a small loss to the rear at the back. The right hand return moulding is also slightly damaged. The top of the base has several old scratches and slight water damage. The drawer fronts are all in generally good condition with only the top drawer having a minor loss to the cock beading in the top left hand corner. All handles are present, however the top right hand handle is missing its circular drop. The colour underneath the polish is generally good and there are no significant issues with the top in terms of splits or cracks. The back of the piece is original. The sides both have stress fractures down the middle of each side running from top to bottom. These cracks are both slightly open by approximately 1/5 - 1 mm. The sides are however flat. The drawer fronts are well figured and in good order. There are no significant losses to the cockbeading. There are one or two minor sections of veneer missing which should be evident from our image. The shaped apron and bracket feet are original and in generally good condition. The handles are original.

The lock is original and present. There is a section of beading missing to the left hand side of the door. This runs for approximately 12 ins from the bottom left hand corner up the side. This should be visible from our image. The base is in generally good order. The return moulding to the left of the bookcase top is detached but we have the piece. The same comments apply to the right hand side. The bureau flap is flat and not warped. The interior is fairly plain but all present. The handles and lock escutcheons to the drawer fronts appear original. The left and right hand lopers have old damage to the fronts.
