An 18th century oak chest fitted two short drawers and three long drawers with brass handles, on bracket feet, W.98cm, D.52cm, H.95cmCONDITION: The top has a horizontal 8-10 crack, some marks and scuffing, the front right corner has an area of replaced timber. The third long drawer has a 2in. bruise above the left handle, some splits to feet.
A large late 18th century George III period oak chest, two half-width unusually over five full-width graduated drawers with ovolo mouldings, raised on bracket feet (104.5cm wide x 130cm high)Condition - it is noted that all over the chest some areas of the original varnish have disappeared. There are water marks and varnish away from the top of the right hand side (looking at it on the elevation) it is very light and has faded considerably as have the bracket feet. The left hand side is better in terms of condition and the two boards are coming away from each other. There is an usual configuration of two half-width over five full-width graduated drawers, the ovolo moulding on the top left hand drawer, on the right hand side, approx. 3 inches is away (there are some pieces of wood in the drawers). Some of the ends of the drawers have the ovolo mouldings away also. Scratching and scuffing commensurate with age to the lower moulding and bracket feet. Pine inside drawer-linings. The handles have been changed at some stage. The top drawer has a lock, the top right-hand drawer does not have a lock, the escutcheons appear to be missing. All the rest of the full-width drawers appear to have the original locks. The Auctioneer advises that the chest probably would require a full, sympathetic re-polish to bring back to near original condition. The backboards are oxidised and look original etc.
