John (III) was nephew of John Whitehurst from whom he took over the business. Traded as Whithurst and Son from c.1805, son John took over the business after his father's death. A William IV gilt-bronze mounted tortoiseshell eight day bracket clock, by James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, c.1830, the case with pagoda top and ivory finial, the arched silvered dial with Roman numerals above scrolling foliate engraving, signed JAMES MCCABE, Royal Exchange LONDON 1666, the twin fusee movement striking a bell on the half hour, and with repeating mechanism, backplate further signed, with winder signed 1666, 37cm highNote: James McCabe junior succeeded his father of the same name was one of the most successful English clock and watchmakers of the 19th century. He was apprenticed to Reid and Auld of Edinburgh and was admitted to the Clockmaker's Company as a Free Brother in 1822. From 1826 James McCabe managed the business alone from 97 Cornhill until 1838 when he was forced to temporarily relocate to 32 Cornhill due to a major fire at the Royal Exchange.
