A George III mahogany bureau bookcase, with swans neck pediment above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with slope front and four long graduated drawers with brass drop handles and raised on bracket feet. Width across bureau 91 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The piece probably dates from circa 1800 it is difficult to say exactly. The swans neck pediments are in good order. The moulded cornice and Greek key fretwork have only one small loss to the right hand front corner just below the cornice. The frieze is in good condition. The two doors are in good order and not warped. The brass edging strip is original. We are not sure about the lock escutcheons which maybe later replacements. There are no broken panels of glass. There are three interior shelves. The sides of the top are in good condition. The sides of the base are in good order. The front flap is not warped. There are no issues with the inlay. The lock escutcheon maybe later. The bureau interior is in generally good condition. One of the box wood aprons above the middle right pigeon hole is missing. The left hand return moulding to the top of the base is loose and has a 5 cm partial loss at the rear left hand corner. The drawer fronts are all in generally good condition with no losses to the cockbeading. The handles appear to be original. There is some veneer damage above the top drawer, which should be clearly visible on our images, and above all of the locks on the runners between the drawers. These are visible but not particularly significant. The bracket feet are original and the piece is structurally sound. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
A George III mahogany bureau bookcase, in two sections, with a moulded cornice above a crossbanded frieze and pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals enclosing adjustable shelves and with slope front to fitted interior and with two short and three long graduated drawers with brass drop handles with oval backplates and all raised on ogee bracket feet. Width 128 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bureau bookcase is in generally very good original condition with only minor problems. The cornice has small losses to the top edge of the left hand return. There is a further old loss to the centre top at the front of the cornice, the right hand corner and top of the right hand return. The crossbanded frieze is in good condition. There is a section of the return moulding missing on the right hand side. The sides of the top and back are in good order. The doors are in very good condition generally. They close as they should and there is no warping. One pane of glass is cracked. We have the key to the door which does lock. The left hand return moulding above the bureau is loose. There is a small loss to the rear of this right by the wall end. The sides of the bureau are in good condition. The flap is in good order with old surface marks and various stress fractures to the crossbanding but no real issues. The lock is present. The interior is in generally good. The green baize is stained and there are ink and scratch marks to the interior of the bureau. All drawers are present. One handle is entirely missing and two appear to be later replacements. The drawer fronts are generally in good order and the handles original. The top left hand drawer has some losses to the cockbeading. The middle drawer has similar small losses to the cockbeading as do the bottom two drawers. The bracket feet are original. The front right hand foot has a small section of the return moulding missing at the floor. There are minor repairs to the back feet. The loppers have nibbles to the cockbeading. The piece is structurally very sound and of good colour. The bureau is not a marriage.
A George III inlaid mahogany and simulated rosewood longcase clock by Nicholas Himes of Helston, with eight day striking movement and rhyme to the arch, the case with fluted quarter column corners and raised on ogee bracket feet. Height 232 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We would have thought this clock is circa 1790. The clock hood is in generally good condition with no significant damage issues. It could do with a clean and polish. The trunk door is not warped. The brass lock escutcheon is probably original as are the hinges and door knob. The satinwood urn to the centre of the door has a section of veneer in the centre which is slightly lifting but there are no losses. The corner spandrels are in good condition. The clock base is also in good condition with no warping to the front panel. The feet would appear to be original and in generally good condition. The case, as stated, would benefit from a clean. We have the weights and pendulum and the clock is currently ticking away and striking as it should. The silvered brass dial is in generally good order although a little tarnished and dirty in places. In our opinion the clock is not a marriage. There is no sign of any woodworm.
A 17th century oak press cupboard, dated 1669 and with the initial "TMB". This cupboard was apparently made for a member of the Brooke family of Astley Hall, Chorley, Lancs, and has then descended through the family. Width 155 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This cupboard is in generally good condition and of good colour. The cornice is in good order with only minor surface nibbles to the left and right hand returns. The carved frieze is in good condition. The upper doors are not warped and close as they should. The interior of the piece appears to be original as are the side and backboards. The piece splits just below the doors for ease of transportation. The frieze panels below the doors are in good order as are the drawers. The bracket feet are later additions as the piece will originally have simply had extensions of the corner posts. The feet are perfectly acceptable and the piece is structurally very sound. Height 186 cm, depth at cornice 56 cm, width across cornice 155 cm.
An early Victorian mahogany bracket clock, in the Gothic style, with crossbanded case, silvered dial and two-train fusee movement by W. Briggs, Guildford. Height 56 cm, width 39 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is in generally extremely good condition. There are no real condition issues with the case that are of any note. There are some old stress fractures to the veneers on the triangular hood but there are no significant losses to the veneer anywhere on the case. There are no missing sections of moulding only very minor scratches and scuffs as one might expect. The fretwork to the sides is in good order. The feet are original. The silvered brass dial is very clean. We have the key and pendulum. The pin at the top of the suspension is missing. The clock movement appears to be very clean and complete. The gong train is fully wound and only running for approximately 1 minute prior to stopping. This should easily release. The strike train is also fully wound but the clock is striking as it should. In our opinion there is little wrong with the mechanism.
A 19th century Colonial hardwood and iron bound trunk, with carrying handle to either side and raised on later bracket feet. Width 104 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The trunk is in generally very good structural condition. All of the iron bindings to the top are present. Some of the nails holding the bindings in place are non-original but have been in a long time. There are small losses to the punched brass design along the front edge of the top. Both closing loops are present. The sides of the chest are in good order. Both handles are present. There are some losses to the brass strips on the front panel which should be evident from our images. The rear of the piece is in good order. We do not think that the wooden castors and supporting brackets are original.
A late Victorian satinwood side cabinet, fitted with two drawers with brass drop handles and with a pair of cupboard doors with centre ovals and raised on bracket feet. Width 94 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This cabinet is in generally very good condition. The top is flat and not warped. The edge moulding is in good condition. The drawer and cupboard fronts are all in good order and operate as they should. The left hand door has a very slight stress cracks which is not open across the join in the middle of the door. In our opinion this is not problematic. The bracket feet are all in good condition and original. The backboards are also original. There is no evidence of any woodworm. We have called the cabinet late Victorian. It is probably best described as Edwardian.
A 19th century rosewood inlaid mother of pearl stick barometer, by Blachford & Imray, London. CONDITION REPORT: The brass cistern cover appears to have later retaining screws. The rosewood case is in generally good original condition as is the mother of pearl. The sides of the piece are in good order. The vernier adjustment screw operates as it should. The angled scales are a little dirty and discoloured and the right hand scale has a hairline crack in the bottom right hand corner. The top moulding above the scale but below the cornice and pediment is a later replacement. This is loose. The pediment is original. There is an hinged bracket to the rear of the barometer which is a later replacement presumably in the absence of the gimbal. There is no mercury visible in the tube.
A George III mahogany and walnut bureau bookcase, with moulded cornice above a pair of panelled doors enclosing shelves, the base with sloped front to well fitted interior above two short and three long graduated drawers with brass drop handles with pierced backplates and raised on bracket feet. Width 105 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bureau bookcase is in generally good structural order. The cornice has some minor losses to the rear of the left hand return. The top doors are not warped. The interior is simply shelved. The left and right hand sides of the top are in generally good order with no significant cracks. The slope front to the bureau is in good condition. The interior which comprises a cupboard, five drawers and eight pigeonholes is in generally good condition. All drawer fronts are in good order. The handles and lock escutcheons are later replacements but cover old existing handle holes. The bottom two handles are missing the swans neck drops. The sides of the piece are in good condition. The bracket feet are original and appear to be in good order. The bureau could do with a clean and wax.
An early 19th century mahogany chest of drawers, with three short and three long graduated drawers with brass swans neck drop handles and cockbeading to each drawer front and raised on bracket feet. Width 110 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The top of the chest is in reasonable order with only minor surface scuffs and old ring marks. The top has had a French polish finish and some of this is missing at the right front hand corner. The right and left hand return mouldings are in good condition. The front moulding has a section approximately 8 cm long which has been broken and detached. This has disturbed the veneer in the corner and there are stress cracks and a small section of timber approximately 5 mm x 3 mm missing. This would be a relatively simple repair. The sides of the chest do not have any significant cracks but do have a number of old scuffs and quite deep scratches and marks particularly on the left hand side. The top left hand drawer has a small section of cockbeading missing. The handles are not original, all drawers have evidence of a single knob handle with the exception of the top middle drawer. The second long drawer has a small veneer repair to the left hand top corner and scuffing to the right hand cockbeading. The bottom drawer has cockbeading missing around the right hand top corner and a small dent on the left hand corner. The bracket feet are in good condition and the piece is structurally sound. The back boards are original.
A pair of composition Chinoiserie wall brackets, in the Chinese Chippendale style. Height 35 cm. CONDITION REPORT: These are not brand new reproductions. They are probably Edwardian but not likely to be any earlier. They are quite heavy and in our opinion principally plaster probably over a metal frame. The dimensions of the top are 22.5 cm wide, 16 cm deep. The condition is generally good. There are however some minor chips to both brackets. The largest is on the right hand corner of the pagoda on one bracket. This is also the most recent. Both brackets have other small nibbles but no significant issues. There is no evidence of any overpainting.
