A good Komai inlaid-iron Koro and Cover, c.1880, the rectangular rounded body inlaid in gold and silver with panels of country scenes reserved on a rinzu diaper, the sides with roundels of ho-o, the bracket feet with Shimazu mon, the neck with grapevine, the fruit silver, with sprung angular handles, the domed cover matching, unusual mark in grass-script-like seal characters Kyoto Komai sei tsukuru (proclaim) some minor wear, 16.5cm (2) A kettle with very similar views, roundels and fruiting vine is illustrated in The Khalili Collection, 1995, Metalwork, Part I, no 20. However, that is by Ryubundo who, the catalogue states, employed workers from the Komai concern. The present koro is presumably by one such worker before he changed employer.
