A George III mahogany longcase clock, by James Gray of Edinburgh, with swans neck pediment above the 12 inch arched painted dial with Roman numerals, two-train movement and subsidiary date and seconds dials, flanked by fluted columns and with long trunk door and raised on bracket feet. Height 87 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The case is a typical Edinburgh type case and we believe that the item is not a marriage. The cheeks of the case have not been built up and the seatboard appears old. The mask around the face fits reasonably well. The swans neck pediment has old cracks running from left to right but there are no losses. The fretwork beneath is in good order. The glazed door is loose at the top hinge but there are no losses. The trunk door is not warped. The face of the clock and sides are also in good order. The clock case has probably been repolished at sometime within the last 10 years but this has been done reasonably well. The clock face centre has been restored and the numerals, subsidiary dials and makers name have all been repainted. The blue corner spandrels and arch appear to be in their original condition. The clock is currently ticking away. There are minor losses to the top left and right hand corners of the swans neck pediment but these losses are not significant.

The crossbanding on the desk top is in good order with only very minor scratches as one would expect. The piece is structurally solid, the handles are original and all of the drawer fronts are in good condition. The sides of the piece are in good order also as is the back. The back of the piece is slightly faded and has clearly seen more sunlight than the sides and front. The bracket feet are original and only a little scuffed around the edges as one would expect.
A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, the top half with a moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals enclosing shelves, the base with secretaire drawer above three further graduated drawers with brass drop handles, circular backplates and raised on splayed bracket feet. Width 43 ins. CONDITION REPORT: This piece is in unrestored condition. The cornice is in good order. The doors are in generally good condition and not warped. We have the key and the lock operates. One pane of glass is cracked (to the right of the key) on the right hand side. The sides of the top are slightly scuffed and marked but there are no significant issues. The base is in generally sound condition. There are scratches and scuffs to the sides as one would expect. The secretaire drawer operates as it should. The interior is a little tired but all present. The handles to all drawers are not original but they are old. There is evidence of a previous set of knob handles visible from behind the drawer fronts. The cockbeading to the drawers is generally in good order with only minor losses. The bracket feet are original but a little scuffed.
