Private collection, Shropshire. Catalogue Note Goncalo alves (Astronium spp.) is the modern name for what used to be known as zebrawood. The first shipments to arrive in England were from Central America. Edward Long's History of Jamaica (1744) states zebrawood 'at present in esteem among cabinet makers is brought to Jamaica from Mosquito shore'. Zebrawood occurs sporadically in English custom returns during the 1770s.

(B.P. 21% + VAT) One finial is broken but extant otherwise in good condition overall.

No side doors. No wall pins.Bell is replaced and too too small for clock. No evidence of previous verge escapement. Frets likely replacements. Square-head screws modern replacements. Wear to pinions especially on the fly wheel. Top and bottom plates and upright pillars are redder in colour than other elements. Four small modern brass bolts to going train rope wheel.

The movement is in good condition and was running before consignment. It may require a service. The case has been restored in the past. The base appears to have been reconstructed. The bracket feet are incorrect. Some reveneering in places.

Kienzle, Germany, a Victorian oak chiming bracket clock the eight-day duration movement chiming the quarters on four gongs with the backplate stamped with the Kienzle trademark depicting a winged wheel, the arched silvered dial having black Roman hour numerals with a subsidiary 'Chime/Silent' dial within the arch, the oak case with canted corners, a pediment top and standing on bun feet, height 40cm.
Winterhalder & Hoffmeier, Sch., an oak quarter chiming mantel clock, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a gong and the 'ting/tang' quarters on two gongs, the movement backplate stamped W&H Sch. being the trademark of Winterhalder & Hoffmeier of Schwaerzenbach, the arched silvered dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, with the arch having subsidiary dials for 'Chime/Silent' and regulation, with blued steel spade hands, the arched-top oak case with boxwood stringing and standing on brass bracket feet, height 23cm. Biography The origins of Winterhalder & Hofmeier stretch back to 1810 when Thomas Winterhalder established Winterhalder Uhrenfabrik. His grandson Anton Winterhalder (born 1838) was in charge of the business in Schwarzenbach in Germany when he entered into partnership with Johannes Hofmeier (1802-1876) in 1850 to form Winterhalder & Hofmeier.
