Shipley/Derby, 8-day movement striking on a bell, curly pediment with brass paterae to hood supported on turned columns, inlaid mahogany frieze below hood, fluted quarter columns flanking trunk door with shaped top with marquetry urn in vesica shaped reserve, panel and canted angles to base, bracket feet, pendulum & weights, 87.25in (221.5cm) high.James Shipley (1784-1850) was son of William, of a clockmaking dynasty. He was apprenticed to his uncle 1798-1805 and worked with his elder brother Jonathan until the latter's death in 1811, after which he worked alone and later with his sons Bevel and Digby Shipley. In 1806 he purchased the bankrupt stock of William & John Holliwell of Derby, and worked from no less than four addresses, ending in St. James's Lane from 1843, where he was succeeded by his sons.

He was father to the eminent James Condliff of Liverpool (1790-1851)
