An 18th century mahogany cased bracket clock, with twin fusee movement, the dial having a gilt silvered chapter ring signed `Chris Pinchbeck, London` encircling a matted centre with pierced gilt brass spandrels to the corners and a strike/silent dial in the arch, the caddy top case with gilt brass handle above an arched glazed door, with pierced fretwork sound holes backed in red silk, the brass movement back plate ornately etched with heraldic crest, standing 42 cm high (minus handle), on squat moulded square feet, 26.5 cm wide x 17 cm deep. Illustrated.
LARGE BRONZE SHIP’S BELL with original iron bracket, a later applied brass plate engraved “Bell from the Dutch steamship Friesland sunk by a German dive bomber when convoy FN 37 was attacked 18 miles NNW of Cromer on October 27th 1941 with the loss of her crew of 13” 6in. JAPANESE PART BLACK LAQUER ARMOUR EDO PERIOD comprising a breast plate constructed of interlocking plates surmounted by a section of vertical rods with cords attaching the back plate with vambrace and tassets of black cord, the two arm sections covered with fine mail patinated iron strips and plates terminating in fingerless gauntlets decorated with flower heads, the back plate with iron bracket and with original leather lining, on a modern wood stand armour 31in. (78cm) high, 14in. (35cm) wide, height on stand 59in. (149cm)
AN ANTIQUE MAHOGANY BUREAU BOOKCASE in two parts, the interior of the upper half fitted shelves enclosed by a mirrored door with dentil cornice and boxwood line inlay, the lower half with fitted interior enclosed by a fall front and with four long drawers below, brass swan neck handles on bracket feet, 32" wide.
W. Grace, London, a William IV mahogany bracket clock, the eight-day duration, double fusee movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell with pull repeat, with the eight-inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel spade hands, the mahogany case having canted corners with applied carved mouldings to the front and to the front of the scroll sides, with a curved top, height: 44cms. * William Grace is recorded as working in London from before 1855 until 1869.
Ellicott, Royal Exchange A mahogany bracket clock, the double fusee, eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the eight-inch round, convex dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel hands and signed by the maker ‘Ellicott, Royal Exchange’, with a cast brass bezel, the mahogany dome topped case having decorative boxwood inlay to the front, height: 41cm. * The Ellicott family were well known clockmakers working at the Royal Exchange, having started with the ingenious maker John Ellicott who died in 1733. A succession of family members, including John jnr, one of the countries most eminent makers, continued the business with, at the date this clock was made, Edward jnr. who became a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1795 before becoming Master, and died in 1835.
An early 18th century walnut veneer, feather banded and engraved brass mounted cabinet on chest, the upper part with a moulded cornice, fitted with an arrangement of two drawers enclosed by a pair of doors with quatrelobe burr veneered panels, within crossbanded borders, having engraved brass hinges and cartouche locking plate, the lower part containing two short and two long drawers, on later bracket feet, 107cm (3ft 6in) wide.
A George III mahogany and inlaid serpentine chest, the top with a moulded edge and projecting cut corners, fitted with a brushing slide and containing two short and three long drawers between canted angles decorated with chequer feather lines, on splayed bracket feet, 123cm (4ft 0 1/2in) wide.
A George III mahogany tallboy with Greek key pattern cornice, two short and three graduated long drawers flanked by blind fret carved canted corners to the upper section, a brushing slide and three further long drawers below and on shaped bracket feet, 101cm (3ft 8in) wide x 182cm (5ft 11in) long.
