A 19th Century Side by Side Double Barrel Percussion Travelling Pistol by Forsyth & Co., London, 16 bore, the 20cm twist steel barrels numbered 3960 and with London proof marks to the underside, the top flat engraved FORSYTH & CO., Patent Gun Makers, LONDON, the lock plates engraved with foliage and signed FORSYTH & CO. PATENT, the walnut half stock with horn fore-end tip, foliate engraved steel trigger guard with pineapple finial, with chequered grip and rounded oval pommel, with swivel steel ramrod, 36cm Footnote:- Dr Alexander John Forsyth invented and patented the percussion lock in 1807. He set up a London gun shop in the name of Forsyth & Company in 1808. Action works, hold at full and half cock. The securing bracket to the underside of the barrel is broken. Black patching to the metalwork and minor bruising to the stock. Pitting to the bore.
