VAT)Condition Report: Some cracks to the wax, but generally good, especially for wax. some age damage to the dress, but again, good for age.
A GEORGE II BURR OAK DROP LEAF TABLE MID 18TH CENTURY 70cm high, 88cm wide, 84cm deep Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some losses, restorations and observations including:The burr oak top with a patina of marks, knocks and variable colour with some patches, cracks along the grain of timber and some screw tip marks and dowels.One missing section to the drop leaf edge of the central table top section. The drop leaves with ruled joints.One drop leaf has no hinged supports to hold the leaf horizontal, the other drop leaf has two hinged supports, one of which is not fixed with a pin, this leaf also has wedges to keep the leaf firm and horizontal.There is a wood bracket to one leg, which is probably later for strength. There are other later elements including blocks and possibly some of the frieze sections and stretchers.There is evidence of old worm.The square tapering legs have some movement in the joints.Please see the additional condition report photographs as a visual reference of condition. A PAIR OF GEORGE III OAK CLOTHES PRESSES ATTRIBUTED TO ROBERT KEENE, MID 18TH CENTURY The panelled doors enclosing adjustable shelves 246cm high, 200cm wide, 70cm deepProvenance: Supplied to Edward Leigh, (d. 1786), 5th Lord Leigh, Stoneleigh Abbey, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, and by descent until sold at Christie's House Sale, 15-16 October 1981, lots 155 and 156. Christie's, Manor House at Clifton Hampden, Home of Christopher Gibbs, 25-26 September 2000, lot 401, where purchased by Robert Kime Literature: G Beard & C Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 502 These oak presses were supplied to Edward Leigh (1742-1786) for Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire and are likely to be those noted in the invoice dated 14 March to 25 May 1764 submitted by the Coventry cabinet-maker Robert Keene (d1778). The invoice notes that were largely crafted by Thomas Gordon, who worked on them for twenty-six days, and he was assisted by Samuel Phillips and John Binney in setting them up in the house. They were invoiced as: '2 large linen presses £4 11s 0d 111 feet of Inch ½ wannscotts for do £3 14s 0d 6 pair of Brite Iron Butt hinges 7s 6d 16 strong handles & roses etc. 13s 4d' The total bill for the presses, including several additional expenses was £24 9s 6¼d. Condition Report: Overall there are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some losses, restorations and observations including:There are repairs to the cornice and dentil border area, with some small sections including dentil carving missing, others replacements. A newspaper glued to the top of one clothes press, dated 1980.Some cracks to the sides with some fillets, patches and fading to the staining, some missing sections, with chips and knocks to the upper border edge of the base sections.There is some evidence of old worm.The bracket feet with some later blocks and brackets, some refixing of the bracket feet including some filler.There are two keys to the upper doors, the locks and escutcheons are later. One of the escutcheons is not attached to the door.There are some gaps between the doors with some losses and some areas of repair. The left door of one cabinet has later screws to the end joints. The right hand door of the other cabinet has re-worked hinges with patched areas and an inset section along the edge of the drawer.The backs are of panelled oak construction.One of the shelves has a chipped section, some of the shelves are later.The drawer linings are oak, one of the handles is missing, the locks and escutcheons are later, there is no key. One of the cabinets has sticky backed plastic to the interior base of the drawers, there are some cracks to the drawer linings and some inset fillets.Please see the additional condition report photographs as a visual reference of condition. A LATE GEORGE III PAINTED CHEST OF DRAWERS EARLY 19TH CENTURY Cream painted with green borders 102cm high, 112cm wide, 54.5cm deep Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some losses, restorations and observations including:The paintwork is rubbed and worn with some overpainting and some later stainingThere are losses including to the front corner of the top and the bracket feet.Restorations include struts to the back, some interior and base additional blocks and supports and some drawer guide blocks.There is some evidence of old worm.Some of the interior dust shelves between the drawers are missing.Some locks are missing and there is no key.The long drawers are lined with an indigo blue paper.Please see the additional condition report photographs as a visual reference of condition.
