London Gazette 3.6.1915 7149 Company Sergeant-Major Dooley, T., 2nd Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment'For conspicuous gallantry and marked ability near Neuve Chapelle from 10-13 March 1915. He showed great resource in the able handling of his men under fire, and also in strengthening the positions captured from the enemy.’Second Lieutenant Thomas Dooley, D.C.M., born Rotherham, Yorkshire, 1883; enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment,1903, and proceeded to India with the 2nd Battalion in 1906; on the outbreak of the Great War embarked from India for France as part of the Gharwal Brigade, Meerut Division, landing at Marseilles, 12.10.1914; awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his conspicuous gallantry at Neuve Chappelle, 10-13.3.1915; shortly afterwards Commissioned Second Lieutenant 'for service in the Field', 28.3.1915.The following article appeared in the Coalville Times, 30.4.1915, under the headline 'Risen From The Ranks - Commission For A Coalville Soldier': ‘Many congratulations will be offered by Coalville people to Lieutenant T. Dooley on having been awarded a commission in His Majesty’s Army. The gallant soldier is an old Coalville British School boy, and a son of Mr. T. Dooley, of 122 Margaret Street. He joined the army (Leicesters) 12 years ago and has spent nine years in India, being there when the war broke out. He came over with the Indian Expeditionary Force to France and has been taking part in the fighting. He was by the side of Corporal Jack Sheffield, when the latter fell at Neuve Chapelle. Only two months ago he was made a Company Sergeant-Major. The news of his further promotion, announced at a meeting in Marlborough Square, Coalville on Sunday afternoon, was enthusiastically cheered by a crowd of about two thousand people. He was married in March last and his wife is still in India. Lieutenant Dooley is every inch a soldier and has done remarkably well since adopting the army as his profession. For four years he has acted as a gymnasium instructor and he was captain of the regimental football team in India, having played for Coalville Town during the latter years of his civilian life.’The day after this article appeared, Dooley was killed in action while serving in his new capacity as a commissioned officer in the 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, 1.5.1915, when his trench, in the area of Port Athur came under a heavy enemy bombardment, and he is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Belgium.Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Kerry Farrant. Kerry says ""I have taken part in this amazing project because at the age of 28 and 12 wks pregnant my life changed forever. Having to go through surgery to have my left breast removed while carrying my unborn baby was a difficult thing to face but I knew I had no choice as I needed to fight this awful disease all the way to the end so I could be here for my then 2 yr old daughter and the daughter I hadn?t met yet. Having one breast was a weird and scary experience getting young hip bras was near on impossible, but that was the least of my problems I had to still face my 6 sessions of chemotherapy and 15 sessions of radiotherapy oh yes and of course give birth. After 4 chemo?s and 34 wks pregnant I was inducted and my beautiful baby Esmay was born 3lb 14oz and perfectly formed. I went on to have the rest of my chemo and radio then herceptin. I?m 5 yrs since diagnosis now, I have had 2 further breast operations and although I don?t have any nipples or feeling in my breasts I?m happy with what I have and I?m happy to be alive I wanted to share my breast cast with everyone to show that you can still look normal and that surgeons can do marvellous things. My baby Esmay has just started school and I thank all the hospital staff that made it possible for me and her to be here today to share the experiences of life"". Kerry`s cast was painted by artist John Frith of Art by Frithy. ""When I was first asked to contribute to this amazing project, I was a little daunted about such a sensitive issue, but seeing the enthusiasm of Sue Smith and all the other ladies involved, how could I possibly say no? It took me a while to decide what to paint on the cast I was given, and it was hanging around the studio for a bit while I sought inspiration. Then it came, a pair of chimps! My technique is fairly loose; I have had no formal training and just do what comes into my head at the time with whatever materials are to hand!"" This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Nicola Daykin. Nicola says, ""Sometimes it feels like a piece of the jigsaw puzzle is missing. I have 2 sisters and the statistic I always remember is that 1 in 3 women will get Breast Cancer. So when you look to your left and to your right to the people you love most in the world it is unimaginable to think of what might be. And when you add into the equation that my maternal grandmother and aunt both were diagnosed and treated for Breast Cancer the realisation that it is very close to home is quite stark. I will never know if my mother would have suffered as she died when I was 11, so as I say the piece of this jigsaw is missing. I have witnessed the devastation that a diagnosis, treatment and unfortunately loss that Breast Cancer had in a close friend and their family and if I am honest it strikes fear into me. So I can either wait and see if and when it might happen which is something that I have no control over, or I can do something to raise awareness of Suffolk Breakthrough Breast Cancer and hopefully raise a bit of money as well. Now your average cake bake is clearly way more in my comfort zone than having your bust on show for half the county! But with Keri and Sue and a little gentle persuasion from friends and having seen the beautiful finished sculptures, then if all I can give it some time, then I am privileged to volunteer. What an amazing way to show that no matter who you are, what you do, or where you come from, each of us is different and yet united by being women no matter what our shape or size. So I have stepped out of my comfort zone, and am proud to have my bust on show for all to see (of course all in a good cause!)"". Nicola`s cast has been decorated by artist Kim Whittingham. ""I was very happy to take part in such a worthwhile project. I have several friends who have battled with breast cancer and therefore contributing towards raising the profile of the message for October and hopefully to raise some money through the auction was a natural option for me.I wanted to produce artwork for the cast which combined my specific areas as an artist and illustrator, so I covered the cast with decoupage copies of a selection of my paintings, local Bury St.Edmunds architecture, Cambridge,Venice, reflections and still life images.I very much enjoyed producing the artwork, decoupage was a new experience for me!"". www.kimwhittingham.org. This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Bianca Carpenter. Bianca says, ""I`m Bianca, I`m a healthy 27 year old who eats well and runs 3 times a week as I enjoy taking part in running events such as half marathons and of course the race for life which myself and my mum enter every year. I found a lump in my left breast in July and on August 13th 2014 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rather than feel sorry for myself and sad I`ve decided to be as positive and upbeat as I can. I`ve chosen to have a cast of my breasts done to help promote awareness of breast cancer in young women and to get it out there that women need to be checking their breasts what ever age they are. So let`s raise money as well as awareness and kick cancers butt together. Bianca`s cast was decorated by artist Keri Bird, ""The idea behind the art on Bianca`s cast, is that the art signifies a white swan. For me, a white swan has the following meaning which I find really poignant: ? LOVE - It sometimes takes something so tragic to happen in our lives to realise how loved we are, and how much we love others. Since Bianca`s diagnosis I have seen the love and support so many people have shown her. ? BEAUTY - Bianca is a beautiful, young 27 year old whose life has been turned upside down at such a young age. Her strength and positivity at such a difficult time, has demonstrated to me what a beautiful person she is on the inside, and out. The Simply The Breast project has also been a way to show that we are all different shapes and sizes, and no matter what, you are still beautiful. ? ELEGANCE - Bianca has carried herself with such elegance through this difficult time in her life. She has continued to smile, stay strong and has been so willing and open to share her journey with others, to help raise awareness of Breast Cancer in young people"". www.birdsbodycasts.co.uk The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 15 inches. This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Mary Hills. Mary says ""When I discovered the lump on my 52nd birthday I have never felt such fear, I passed the next 18 months of multiple operations and chemotherapy in a state that I can only describe as numb, egged on by my family, friends and colleagues I came to realise how many people loved me and a stubbornness set in that every day I would prove worthy of such affection, that I would not take anyone or anything for granted. I am still here, I love my life, I am saying yes and trying new things all time which opens up new worlds and leads me to meet talented people, to do things that my former self could never have dreamed. To have my bust cast, who would have thought of it! Mary`s cast was painted by artist Susie McCabe. The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 8 inches. To post this item to you (1st class Special Delivery) a charge of £20 will need to added to this item. This item is also available to collect from Bury St Edmunds. This is a live breast cast made of plaster of paris of Tracey Stephenson. Tracey says "" I?m 50 this year, a widow with 3 daughters and a year ago, in September 2014, following my first mammogram, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I saw a piece in the Bury Free Press about the project. I was about to undergo a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction. I wanted to take part because after I was diagnosed, I met with a lot of misconceptions and naivety regarding breast cancer and I wanted to try to raise awareness to help others overcome these issues. Plus I have 3 daughters and I wanted to show them I could beat this and that it wouldn?t get me down, to show them that life throws you curve balls but the best way to deal with them is head on. I am pleased to have been able to use my experience in a positive way. I?m still undergoing further breast reconstruction and it will probably be another year before the surgical team have finished with me but all the healthcare professionals have been excellent and have made the whole process easier to deal with. If doing all of this has made one person more aware, prompted one person to get checked out and deal with any thing they?ve found early enough to get it treated successfully, made one more person be more supportive to a family member or friend, then it has all been worthwhile"". Tracey`s Cast was painted by artist Jane Bryant. ""In my work I am interested in repetition, form, and the process of drawing. For Tracey`s cast I followed a process of repetition with the addition of an image embedded within the circles. This is based upon an orchid flower which has the most beautiful natural structure. I wanted to achieve a sense of peace and tranquility"". The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 8 inches.
