Circle of Gerard van Spaendonck, Dutch 1746-1822- Still life of flowers in an ornamental urn on a ledge; oil on canvas, 76.5 x 63.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: The present work is closely related to a canvas held at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire entitled 'Still Life with Flowers in an Urn and Two Parrots' (NT 515449), which has been attributed to Jakob Bogdani (1658-1724) or Philip Reinagle, RA (1749-1833). The quality of the brushwork in the present work, entirely evocative of the technique of van Spaendonck, is brilliantly displayed: the vase and marble ledge on which the flower arrangement rests effectively create a strong textural contrast with the soft petals and leaves. The canvas is taut on the stretcher and sits well within the frame. Relined. The paint surface is stable on the support. Fine and settled craquelure in areas. Areas of minor paint separation/shrinkage, particularly in the central area of the bouquet. An area of paint loss (roughly 7 irregular spots) lower left, the largest approx. 2 cm. Two minor spots of further paint loss lower right. A minor and unobtrusive retouched loss upper left corner. An area of possible abrasion upper left, to the left of the irises. A cluster of very minor white marks upper centre. Very minor abrasions upper right corner and right edge. Minor marks, some surface dirt, and minor abrasions generally. Inspection under UV light reveals significant areas of retouching across the work, particularly upper centre and centrally, just below the upper roses (see images). Overall, in good retouched condition and ready to hang.

CLET ABRAHAM (France, 1966).Untitled.Stickers on road sign.Signed.Size: 60 cm in diameter. This work is part of the artist Clet Abraham's best-known project, which consists of intervening or "redesigning" the traffic signs of various cities. His intention is to ironically distort their restrictive meaning without impairing their legibility, as Abraham has stated in several interviews.A French painter and sculptor active in Italy, Clet Abraham trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, and after exhibiting in several galleries in Brittany, he moved to Rome, where he will devote himself to restoring antique furniture. From there he organised exhibitions of his work in numerous galleries, not only in Rome but also in Paris and Brittany, as well as in various cultural institutions. In 2005 he moved to Florence, where he still lives and works today. His works enjoyed considerable success thanks to the interest of private collectors in Paris, Monte Carlo and New York, as well as numerous private institutions, such as the Banca Popolare dell'Etruria e del Lazio, the Istituto Tommaso Crudeli in Undine and the Castello di Poppi, which commissioned major projects from him. He has also participated in the three editions of the group exhibition Fuori Luogo, organised by the Chiessi e Fedi society at Palazzo Strozzi (2008), Teatro della Pergola (2009) and Palazzo Medici-Riccardi (2010). Although he is not a street artist as such, in recent years Cleet Abraham has been exploring street art as a form of artistic expression in the context of everyday life. He has made urban interventions, usually on road signs, in various cities in Italy, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Japan and the United States.
JOAN PONÇ BONET (Barcelona, 1927 - Saint-Paul, France, 1984)."Untitled (still life with glasses in Cadaqués)", Suite Cadaqués B-1, ca. 1967.Oil on canvas.Signed on the back.Work referenced in the online catalogue raisonné of the Associació Joan Ponç, cat. no. 1490.With Joan Prats Gallery label on the back.Measurements: 116 x 81 cm.In this canvas Joan Ponç offers us a still life with glasses painted during his time in Cadaqués, a town in Empordà where he spent some years of his life and where he coincided with such illustrious neighbours as Salvador Dalí, Modest Cuixart and Antoni Tàpies.A painter and draughtsman, he trained in Barcelona, in the studio of Ramón Rogent and at the Academy of Plastic Arts with Ángel López-Obrero. After devoting himself to painting and drawing in anonymity, he held his first individual exhibition in 1946 at the Galería Arte in Bilbao, which was to be his definitive establishment on the national art scene. In 1948, together with Tharrats, Puig, Cuixart, Tàpies and Brossa, among others, he founded the avant-garde group Dau al Set. Selected by Eugenio D'Ors, he took part in the Salón de los Once in Madrid in 1951 and 1952. In 1952 he took part in the Hispano-American Biennial, and the following year he spent some time in Paris, where he met Joan Miró and managed to exhibit at the Musée de la Villa. On the latter's recommendation, Ponç gained access to Brazilian artistic circles, settling in São Paulo from 1953 to 1962. In 1954, the year of the dissolution of Dau al Set, he held an exhibition at the city's Museum of Modern Art, which was so successful that the organisation acquired all his works. In Brazil he visited the equatorial jungles, where he was impressed by their fauna, especially insects, which he incorporated into his imagery. In 1955 he founded the Taüll group with Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Jaume Guinovart, Jaume Muxart, Mercadé, Tàpies and Tharrats. After returning to Catalonia due to illness, as a fully established artist he shows his work in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Bonn, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, Antibes and various Spanish cities. In 1965 he won the International Grand Prize for Drawing at the São Paulo Biennial. Ponç's paintings present phantasmagoric images that are both painful and tortured, in which the subconscious is the protagonist. For the painter, art is nothing more than an introduction to the mystery and secrets of the spirit. More of a draughtsman than a painter, his work is extremely detailed and meticulous. Ponç's production can be divided into six periods: the Dau al Set period (1947), the Brazilian period (1958), the metaphysical-geometric period (1969), the period of the metaphysical characters (1970), the acupainting period (1971) and a final period of synthesis (1972). He is currently represented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Universidad de São Paulo, the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo in Vitoria, the Museo de L'Empordà and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
MANUEL VIOLA (Zaragoza, 1916 - San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 1987)."Harlequin with a Cockerel".Oil on panel.Signed in the lower right corner.Size: 36 x 27 cm; 56 x 48 cm (frame).José Viola Gamón adopted the name by which he is known, Manuel Viola, after the Civil War. A member of the El Paso group, his painting is characterised by an informalist and colourist treatment, in line with the avant-garde developed in Spain from the 1950s onwards. He began studying Philosophy and Arts in Barcelona, but was forced to abandon them because of the war. His first drawings date from these years. After the war he went into exile in France, where he wrote for the surrealist poetry magazine "La main à plume". There he began to exhibit his work in the exhibitions of the so-called Spanish School of Paris. He returned to Spain in 1949, and in 1958 his truly personal style began to emerge, and at the same time he joined the avant-garde pictorial group El Paso, to which Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito and Manolo Millares, among others, belonged. He began to express himself through abstract painting with a strong expressionist character and great attention to colour. He definitively left behind the figuration that had prevailed until then in his work. Throughout his life he was awarded numerous prizes, such as the Condado de San Jorge Prize, the Lissones Prize (Milan) and the Gold Medal of the City of Saragossa. He exhibited in the most important galleries in Spain and also abroad, in cities such as Oslo, New York, Venice, São Paulo and Houston. While he was still alive, important retrospective exhibitions of his work were held: in 1965 at the Dirección de Bellas Artes de Madrid, in 1971 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, in 1972 at the Lonja de Zaragoza, in 1983 at the Armas Gallery in Miami, and in 1986 in Houston. After his death, anthological exhibitions of his work continued to be held in international galleries and museums. Manuel Viola's work can be seen in the Reina Sofía Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Cologne, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, the Guggenheim in New York and Bilbao and the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, among many others.

Two paintings in particular have been staple points of reference for some time; Caravaggio's 'Still life with basket of fruit' and Fragonard's 'Le petite parc'. I love the way the basket in Caravaggio's painting appears to fall out of the painting and invade your space, modern day advertising seems to do something similar. An advert for Costa or Mcdonalds uses the same tactics Caravaggio did in 1599. I love the atmosphere in Fragonard's 'Le petite parc painting, and I've tried to incorporate that particular feeling into some of my landscapes and fairground paintings. A gothic atmosphere permeates the work and although the emphasis from painting to painting alters slightly, memory, decadence, and a dream like unreality are core recurring themes. Rose Electra Harris From The Morning I, 2022 Mixed Media on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Rose Electra Harris (b.1991) is a London-based printmaker and painter. Having completed a degree in printmaking at the University of Brighton in 2015, she now works from her studio in south London. Rose uses her work to explore interior space, using the obscure and everyday objects to which she's drawn to create her still lifes. Fascinated by colour, line, shape, texture and pattern, Rose places these objects - some from memory, some imagined, some collected over time - in her roomscapes, playing around with them until she finds the perfect composition, always in search of balance and harmony.Rose reimagines the colourful dialogue that exists between space and furnishings, as interested in the negative space between objects as she is in the objects themselves. She isn't concerned with portraying objects exactly as they are, but more how they make her feel, making use of a singularly distorted, ever so slightly off-kilter, perspective to do so. To her, a room is an oasis and the things within it are what bring it to life. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork I grew up on a small farm in the north of Italy: my house was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fields and I can remember them changing colors with the natural cycle of the seasons. In that small corner of Earth, there was nothing, and yet I had everything I needed to feel blissful, I was surrounded by Life in every form. In my work, I still seek that Life's presence: I want to perceive, explore, and celebrate it as ineffable and precious. My submitted works are the result of the observation of the world around me, which I attentively approach and never ceases to amaze me. I drew "The Young Robin" because robins are regular visitors in my garden and I enjoyed seeing the young robins changing their feathers' color. They are now ready to face the world with the first gust of wind and unfold their secret geometry in the sky. It is a drawing of hope for the future. Sean Worrall Margate Skyline No 51 (The Turner Contemporary), 2022 Acrylic and Varnish on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Sean Worrall is an artist, a painter, a paint addict, a maximalist, and a (slightly reluctant) curator. Currently based in East London where he co-runs Cultivate, a now nomadic gallery, previously housed in a space smack bang in the middle of East London's Vyner Street. Sean regularly exhibits both in galleries, alternative spaces and on the streets. Sean paints every single day, he also runs Organ magazine, has presented on London arts radio station Resonance FM, run a long-standing alternative record label, put on hundreds of left-field gigs and music events - all this very much fuelled by a DIY punk rock ethic. Sean has mostly being focusing on larger paintings this summer although for the last 800 days and more he has been painting a series of daily concluded paintings, a series called "Ten" - one painting brought to a conclusion every single day, always on a 10cm square canvas. Meanwhile his #43leaves pieces go on - the most recent #43leaves drop was on the streets of Bristol during Upfest weekend where Sean had been invited to paint testival, The #43Leaves pieces are paintings on found recycled material, paintings left hanging on the street for people to just take - art drops, leaves left, there has now been well over 2000 paintings left on the streets Sean was brought up on the isle of Anglesey, made his first artistic moves in North Wales and North West England, he has now lived and worked in East London for more than half his life. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The ongoing matter of looking up is still very much just that, ongoing. Something that started in Margate in late Summer 2019 and goes on with several new paintings looking over the River Thames and most recently a painting looking beyond a church in Hackney. No idea where these Skyline paintings are going to go, or for how long the series of paintings will go on for, right now I'm enjoying the act of just looking up, of distilling the information, the sky, the space, the shape, the skylines, the sky beyond the rooftops or the spires or the light reflecting off the Shard. Someone asked if I was putting this series of paintings together for a show, no, I'm enjoying them without that pressure, just enjoying them Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. Andy Swani Wish You Were Here - Dinosaur Apocalypse, 2022 Indian Ink, Oil Pastel and Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Andy Swani was born in Birmingham in 1964, he currently works as an artist, painter, decorator, muralist and printmaker, living in East London. His work is a primal glorification of creation, expressing the wonder of the world, together with an awareness of its inevitable end. Having had some success with traditional still-life painting, mostly of dead fish, which tempered the sensual delights of perception with reminders of mortality, Andy began making paintings in an overtly decorative way, using childlike, naïve representations of creatures and environments as a basis for a joyous and dread filled dialogue with History, Art and lived experience. Influences from around the world and the European premodern age were able to flood into his work, though still rooted in the European painting tradition of Giotto, Goya and Matisse. Examples of his new work were included in The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions of both 2021 & 2022. One of these works, a woodcut, 'Crocodiles (Fuchsia on Yellow)', is being used by The Royal Academy of Arts in its 2023 calendar. To convey similar qualities to the gouging and cutting of a woodcut, a 'scraperboard' technique was used for this postcard. The surface was prepared by covering it with a layer of yellow ochre oil pastel which was then painted over with black Indian ink. The ink surface was then scraped and scratched with a toothpick to reveal the ochre beneath. Layers of fixative were then applied to stabilise the surface. The represented object taking the ambiguity further - wave or crocodile? animal or foliage? 'Crocodile Continuation' is one of a series of works exploring the decorative and expressive possibilities of stylised crocodile and wave forms. Katharina Renneisen Aja With Dots I, 2022 Oil on Silver Gelatin Print Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Katharina Renneisen (*1978) is a German visual artist who uses analogue photography as her main medium. In her work, she focusses on classical subjects like the nude, the landscape, or the still life. Many of her silver gelatin prints are hand-coloured with oil paints. Education Humboldt-University of Berlin Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The submitted works are part of my ongoing occupation with the female nude. I first take the photographs with an analogue large format camera. From the negatives I then make silver gelatin prints, on which I finally apply oil paints. This technique not only allows for a more painterly depiction of the flesh, but it also gives me the possibility to freely create new compositions, which challenge the boundaries between photography and painting, figuration and abstraction. Martin Davis Work-Life Balance Dice, 2022 Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Martin Davis is an ex-firefighter turned artist. After university he spent more than 30 years in the fire & rescue service, during which time he found painting was a perfect antidote to the operational stresses of his working life. He committed himself fully to his art in 2008 after retirement and has spent the last 14 years finding his distinctive artistic voice. Martin is by admission an instinctive artist. Education He graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1976 (2.1 Economics) but in terms of art he is almost wholly self-trained, his only formal qualification being an Art GCE "O" level from his schooldays. Even so his artwork is bought by private collectors around the world and he has secured gallery space throughout the UK as well as in his native Derbyshire where he works from his home studio in Swanwick. My compositions are often associated with distant memories from childhood, here of hazy summers and the play of light and shadows. "Work-life balance dice" I guess is a still life, but a rapidly executed one. Much of my inspiration comes from words and phrases and modern concepts. I love to use the play of words against an image when on suggests the other, even out of it's usual context. Language and visual art are natural bedfellows.
