Heading: Author: Forbes, HelenTitle: Original watercolor of Bryce Canyon, UtahPlace Published: Publisher:Date Published: Early to mid-20th centuryDescription: Watercolor on paper tipped into original mat showing the pink rock walls of Bryce Canyon, and identified as such in pencil on the mat. Bryce Canyon is noted for its Hoodoos, which are the odd shaped pillars of rock left standing from the forces of erosion, and are evident in this attractively painted work, in an almost abstract form. Bryce Canyon in Southern Utah was first designated as the Bryce Canyon National Monument in 1923 and reached National Park Status in 1928. The work is signed "Helen Forbes" in pencil on the lower left and measures 10x14". Helen Forbes (1891-1945), etcher, muralist and painter was born in San Francisco in 1891 into a pioneer California family. She studied under Frank Van Sloun at the California School of Fine Arts, and was awarded a lifetime scholarship there. She later traveled in Europe for many years furthering her art training in Paris and Munich. Returning to California in 1924, she studied under Armin Hansen in Carmel. In the 30's she resided in Palo Alto, and at one time lived in Death Valley in a deserted inn. Her paintings consist of subjects in the Sierra, desert scenes, landscapes of Mexico, Death Valley and still-life. She won many awards, including the 1915 PPIE, and participated in WPA Projects, murals in public buildings etc. her work is held in many California museums. Provenance: Beaux Arts Gallery S.F. (Folio) yellow cloth with pictorial dust jacket. First Edition. Inscribed by Newman on title page: "To Robert and Brenda Edelson, with my real appreciation and interest in collecting photography, Arnold Newman, 3/4/00." Arnold Newman was noted for his "environmental portraits" of artists and politicians, as well as his carefully composed abstract still life images. Slight bump to jacket and cloth at head of spine; near fine.

Approximately 14x21 cm (5½x8¼"), matted and framed (both sides of sheet viewable). Overall 37x52 cm (10¾x20½"). A great pair of images, one showing a centaur figure at a fast gallop, the other side showing a more aged figure an iron and envelope in hand. Heinrich Kley (1863-1945?) was a German illustrator, editorial illustrator and painter. Kley studied "practical arts" at the Karlsruhe Akademie and finished his studies in Munich. His early works were conventional portraits, landscapes, still-life, city scenes and historical paintings. Kley attained greater notoriety with his sometimes darkly humorous pen drawings, many appearing in periodical such as Jugend and Simplicissimus. Provenance: Butterfield & Butterfield Sale 3774P, March 12, 1987. Small label of the S.F.M.A. at lower right on rear of frame. Light wear and spotting to paper; very good.
