Bryce Canyon is noted for its Hoodoos, which are the odd shaped pillars of rock left standing from the forces of erosion, and are evident in this attractively painted work, in an almost abstract form. Helen Forbes (1891-1945), etcher, muralist and painter was born in San Francisco in 1891 into a pioneer California family. She studied under Frank Van Sloun at the California School of Fine Arts, and was awarded a lifetime scholarship there. She later traveled in Europe for many years furthering her art training in Paris and Munich. Returning to California in 1924, she studied under Armin Hansen in Carmel. In the 30's she resided in Palo Alto, and at one time lived in Death Valley in a deserted inn. Her paintings consist of subjects in the Sierra, desert scenes, landscapes of Mexico, Death Valley and still-life. She won many awards, including the 1915 PPIE, and participated in WPA Projects, murals in public buildings etc. her work is held in many California museums. Provenance: Beaux Arts Gallery S.F.
