Lot 23

Jack Jubb Fish, 2023 Airbrush, acrylic on postcard Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Ell Pennick About Jack Jubb is an Artist whose practice is grounded in a critical engagement with the politics of the image, having access to one of the earliest iterations of Photoshop's suite of airbrushing and liquify tools as a child through his father's job as a graphic designer, Jack developed an acute interest in the power of editing tools to transform and recontextualise media. Jack's airbrush paintings derive from the historical context of the airbrush as one of the earliest tools used for the editing of photographs. Even as the practice has been long been superseded by advancements in digital photo editing, the "airbrushed" photograph remains in the popular vernacular, denoting a dawning paranoia associated with the truth or falsehood of the images that one is confronted with in every sphere of life, employing an airbrush as a lens-based tool of image reproduction and doctoring. Jack's painting practice is an editorial process in which elements of source material, gathered from personal photographs and vast tracts of online data, may be destroyed, or embellished to craft affecting narratives concerning memory, alienation, and countercultural anxieties. Lee Knott Bite of an Apple 5, 2023 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About My work is about playing around with, and combining, different styles and images and methods of production: often using them as a metaphor for the human condition; with attraction and mortality and the transience, and struggles, of existence being key themes. Using various cultural and artistic references and signifiers as a symbolic language - while at the same absorbing and processing the myriad of possibilities on offer - I'm interested in the blending of conscious and unconscious ideas through which an overall narrative can be observed. With my current 'apple' series I use the archetypal image of a bitten apple as a metaphor for temptation and attraction, and as a symbol of the 'biting of the apple' of technology and technological advances; especially with regard to the exponential advances of AI and the possibility of it becoming self-aware. The apples are painted to look artificially appealing, combining still life with a pop art sensibility.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Sarah Wood Admiration (AOP), 2023 Oil on Sized Paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Sarah grew up in Yorkshire, close to the city of Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales. Since graduating from Wimbledon School of Art, London, Sarah has maintained a professional practice, occupying various studios across London, and now settled in Space Studios, Peckham, London. Following a successful exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery in Cornwall, curated by Cath Wallace, Sarah's work has been shown and sold through Quantum Contemporary Art, London at art fairs around the world. For many years Sarah has immersed herself in the painting of pears and continues to develop her skills and contemporary style, whilst also applying the same concentration to a series of small flower paintings. Marco Bizzarri Still Standing, Studio I Watercolour and acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Marco Bizzarri (b. 1988, Santiago) is a Chilean artist based in West Sussex, England. Marco deals with memory, commemoration and archive through painting, installation and video. In his work, research processes and materiality are subordinated to context. On the one hand, linked to the experiential encounter, and on the other, to the geographical positioning (rural-industrial territories), so that fieldwork, involvement with the landscape and human testimony are fundamental. Education He graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile with a BA in Fine Arts (2014) Turps art school painting programme (2021) Select Exhibitions/Awards Recent solo exhibitions include Unearthed at Unit 1 Gallery Workshop in London and Incuria at Galería Animal in Chile. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions including Recursion at The Split Gallery (London, 2023) Fauna Presents Auction at Arundel Castle (Arundel, 2023) But dearer still is truth at Plato Gallery (Portugal 2023) Gilbert Bayes Award Exhibition, Royal Society of Sculptors at Cromwell Place (London, 2022), Friends with benefits, Safehouse 2 (London 2022) RSS GBA Exhibition at CASC Gallery, University of Chester (Chester, 2022), Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries (London, 2021), "XIV Premio MAVI arte joven" at MAVI Museum (Chile, 2020), Habitantes at Centro Cultural Matta (Argentina,2019), Cohabitar at Cede Galería (Perú, 2016), Outsider at the Gare of Strasbourg (France, 2014), and The Young Collectors Exhibition at the Leila Heller Gallery (USA, 2013). Gallery Representation Galeria Patricia Ready (Chile) Statement About AOAP Submitted Artwork His paintings respond to the exercise of collecting and translating images by delving into the material possibilities of pictorial language. The result combines abstraction and figuration: the images show the multiple resources with which they have been constructed. By rescuing objects, events, people or places - which run the risk of being forgotten - the artist composes situations that link different spaces, times and actors in a single image. An exercise that responds to the need to give visibility to those fleeting things coming from an autobiographical context that shows events of the artist's daily life. His painting reveals as much as it conceals. The gesture of covering the form, through dripping, reveals itself as a means of silencing his images and at the same time charging them with a singular graphic and chromatic expression where light and darkness coexist on the same plane You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Estelle Vera Ocean View VII Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Estelle Vera lives by the sea in Deal. Born in the countryside of Switzerland, she probably fell in love with nature with her first cry. She has always enjoyed the freedom of strolling through the woods, climbing trees, lying in the grass and dreaming into the clouds. It has certainly made a strong impact on her journey. After five years of study at the Lucerne School of Art and Design, she was drawn without hesitation to Italy, where she continued studying painting at the Art Academy of Bologna. In the last decade, she discovered very surprisingly her love for still life painting and a parallel journey took its way. At the beginning she enjoyed the playful approach to the overwhelming abundance of colours, perspectives and patterns. The move to the coast of South England brought new inspirations and the conversation deepened. The subtle colours, the sensitive light and the beauty and fragility of the objects found on her walks along the beaches became once more a dive into silence. As an honouring of simplicity and in a slow process paintings emerge filled with great wonder. Michelle Maddox Billy Button in a Cup Oil on gessoed paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Her work has been mainly preoccupied with the ordinary object within the Still Life genre, specifically the disregarded or the mundane where she aims to enhance its potential through her favoured medium of oil paint. Recently she has started the postgraduate online drawing development year at the Royal drawing school London She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and recent exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London in 2020 and 2023 and Hampstead Art Society Annual exhibition 2022 and 2023. Her work is in private collections in Switzerland, England, France, Luxembourg, Holland, Sweden, Australia, The British Virgin Islands and Canada. Select Exhibitions/Awards Royal Academy Summer exhibition 2020, 2023, Hampstead art society 2021, 2022 Gallery Representation Python Gallery Kirchgasse, 8001 Zurich Switzerland Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The painting as an object is more important than the initial subject, although the ordinary object has always fascinated Michelle - she is not necessarily looking for the most beautiful subject, but rather a subject which allows for the use of nuanced colour and light to create a harmonious image. After reading such authors as George Perec about their observations of the everyday as opposed to the sensational which we are bombarded with in the media, she began a deep visual study of the ordinary. Her recent still lifes are about looking at the everyday object beyond its daily role and seeing it as shapes and colours. Her paintings are often seen as quiet and calm, which is not necessarily done consciously, but she tends to choose harmonious palettes and compositions.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Lot 445

Harriet Porter Little Blessing Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Harriet Porter is a London-based artist specialising in still-life oil painting, making quiet monochromatic works of solitary reflective objects. "I paint from observation, concerned with finding patterns of tone within the whole scene, focusing on the glints of light set off by shapes of shadow. I use layers of translucent glaze to build up the feeling of luminosity. The space I create is a world where nothing bad ever happens: a sparse dreamy place filled with a still, tranquil glow". Harriet's preoccupation is informed by her previous career as an art director and stylist. Working in film and photography, she found the camera increasingly frustrating. As a capturing device it became insufficient to describe the wonder with which she perceived the shimmer that constantly caught her eye. She found that painting achieved more accurate results, bypassing unwelcome photographic detail. Lot 7

Sophie Vallance Cantor Tiger Collage, 2023 Oil and collage on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Ell Pennick About Throughout her practice, Sophie Vallance Cantor creates worlds that express the inner workings of her mind by blurring the line between reality and imagination. Her paintings offer a unique perspective as they invite viewers to see the world through her eyes: where bright neon signs light up dark alleyways and domestic cats transform into wild beasts in 24 hour bars and cafés. Each painting reads like a still from a film; characters look at the viewer with a sense of cool detachment as they ride motorcycles down an infinite highway or smoke cigarettes and blow smoke while nursing a cocktail. Amidst the narrative of her paintings there often lies a sense of stillness, with each small moment immortalised and savoured through thick, luscious strokes of oil paint that exude a palpable sense of joy and pleasure in the creation process. Sophie's figures are depicted with strong, bold shapes and her use of vivid colours invites the viewer to relish in the pleasures of her practice. There is a certain sense of playfulness and mischievous delight that permeates all of Sophie's work. In a broader context, Sophie's art serves as a counterbalance to her experiences as a neurodivergent individual, with her self-portraits constantly evolving and conversing with each other on the canvas. Although viewers are welcomed into her world, they are still kept at arm's length, like outsiders looking in on a private moment. By using collage from an original painting, I made on paper and cutting and placing it to fit the postcard shape it ends up feeling true to my own practice but also true to the spirit of Art on a Postcard. The tiger motif is also a recognisable element from my wider practice, and was enjoyable yet challenging to create small whilst maintaining the feeling of a larger painting.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Winifred Nicholson (British, 1893-1981)Flowers in Snow, Bankshead signed and dated 'Winifred Nicholson/1967' (verso) and titled 'FLOWERS IN SNOW BANKSHEAD' (on the canvas overlap)oil on canvas56 x 76.4 cm. (22 x 30 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired directly by the family of the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.LiteratureChristopher Andreae, Winifred Nicholson, Lund Humphries, Farnham, 2009, p.134, cat.no.120 (col.ill.)Painted with a thickly textured impasto surface, Flowers in Snow, Bankshead is perfectly evocative of the crisp blanket of winter or early spring snow which can turn the landscape startlingly bright in the coldest months of the year. Against a background of icy blue and white, in which the suggestion of wintery peaks can be seen beyond, and against a powdery, pale sapphire sky, the bright and sunny blooms of daffodils and irises can be seen bravely holding their own. Painted in vibrant strokes of yellow, orange and purple, they represent the optimism that spring brings, the coming of the first pale rays of sun, and the promise that winter will soon be over for another year. Their leaves shoot upwards with vigour, stretching towards the light.Nicholson writes beautifully about her preoccupation with flowers, in her essay The Flower's Response: 'I like painting flowers – I have tried to paint many things in many different ways, but my paint brush always gives a tremor of pleasure when I let it paint a flower – and I think I know why this is so. Flowers mean different things to different people...to me they are the secret of the cosmos. This secret cannot be put into image, far less into the smallness of words – but I try to. Their silence says to me – 'My rootlets are moving in the dark, in the wet, cold, damp mud – My leaflets are moving in the brightness of the sky – My flowerface has seen the darkness which cannot be seen, and the brightness that is too bright to see – has seen earth to sun and sun to earth.' (Winifred Nicholson, quoted in Andrew Nicholson (ed.), Unknown Colour: Paintings, Letters, Writings by Winifred Nicholson, Faber and Faber, London, 1987, p. 216). This evocative statement sums up particularly well why she related so closely to the burst of new growth in spring time, and the first brave tendrils of green that dare to poke up through the frozen earth to bloom again, year on year. Nicholson also lent particular emphasis to colours and what they represented to her. Green, blue, yellow and white form the foundation of the present work and it is clear that the symbolism she saw in colours lends an extra layer of meaning to the palette she chose. As she wrote: 'Who has heard of blue talking to yellow, the green of conversation? I will tell you when I heard it before – I was high up on a spacious mountainside, below me was a valley with an unseen river flowing along its way. The sky was very distant, the air jasper clear, the scent of herbs all around me. I sat still. Far away in the distance I heard the sheep bells, a flock coming down the valley. The tone of the bells reverberated inconsequently as the sheep moved and browsed, the older members of the flock moving steadily, the lambs gambolling and frolicking with them.' (Winifred Nicholson, 'Can The Blind See Colour Green?', quoted in ibid., pp.236-7). Writing so evocatively, she conjures a sensory world in which there is a synaesthetic delight in the coming of spring, and it is easy to imagine a stream of melting snow trickling by just out of sight in the present lot, as we inhale sharp breaths of the icy clear air that she speaks of. With the promise of new life just round the corner, and the coming of lambs in the fields, Flowers in Snow, Bankshead is a striking example of her wholehearted appreciation of, and celebration for, the natural world. The present lot (and lot 50) come from a Private Collection whose family had a close friendship with the artist. The family would visit Winifred at her home Bankshead, Cumbria in the 1970s, and these trips were recalled as 'full of fun and enjoyment, especially with her son's dog Sally and long walks through the country lanes. Winifred always had lots of time for us children, playing games and showing us interest. My siblings and I remember the feeling of Winifred's incredible warmth and affection. She was always very welcoming to us and the many other friends and family visiting whilst we were there.' Winifred would also visit the family in London when she was in the capital city, and visit the nearby Christian Science Church, through which the friends met.We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 10

Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978)Still Life oil on canvas56.5 x 49.5 cm. (22 1/4 x 19 1/2 in.)Painted circa 1917-18Footnotes:ProvenanceSir John Rothenstein, thence by family descent to the present owner Private Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Tate, Duncan Grant, A Retrospective Exhibition, 12 May-20 June 1959, cat.no.32 (as Dahlias, circa 1913)In 1916 Duncan Grant moved to Charleston in East Sussex, a rented farmhouse on the Gage estate. He discharged his duties as a conscientious objector by working on a nearby farm. He had little time for painting but was able on his free Sundays to carry out some decorations in the house and paint several modest-sized works, often of domestic objects, and also occasional portraits. The present painting shows an opalescent glass holding three or four white clematis flowers (or possibly dahlias). These star-like blooms occur in other paintings of circa 1917-18, especially in a flowerpiece of 1918 in the Keynes Collection, Kings College, Cambridge. Presumably the clematis were established in the Charleston garden. The glass stands on a stone slab in front of the fire grate in the dining room of the house, against a decorative back board. The work occupies the period between the fluent, often flat compositions of 1915 and the more solidly realised works of circa 1918 onwards in which the third dimension is taken seriously.Sir William Rothenstein was an encouraging admirer of Grant's early work and his son lent this painting to the Tate Gallery's retrospective (titled Dahlias). It may have been a gift to Sir William from the artist. It appears to have been exhibited only once since it was painted and has not been previously reproduced. We are grateful to Richard Shone for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Bell had visited Turkey in 1911, traveling with Roger Fry, whose unexpected death in September of 1934 coincides with the execution of the present work. This late summer still life would have been painted at Charleston and shows some of the seasonal fruits grown in the garden. The glass on the left holds three zinnias, a flower Vanessa Bell regularly planted at the house. We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 50

Winifred Nicholson (British, 1893-1981)My Bedroom Window signed, titled and dated 'Winifred Nicholson 1973/'My Bedroom Window' (verso)oil on canvasboard48.5 x 58.8 cm. (19 1/8 x 23 1/8 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Crane Kalman Gallery, London, November 1974, where acquired by the family of the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.One of Winifred Nicholson's most favoured and signature compositions is that of the windowscape, an innovative technique for capturing still life subjects – frequently flowers – as well as the landscape beyond, encompassing the changing tones of the season and creating a sense of intimacy with the interior setting. The present lot shows a very personal view indeed, that of My Bedroom Window. In 1954 Nicholson wrote a short piece entitled I Like To Have A Picture In My Room, in which she lists desires for her ideal domestic space. She states 'I want a window in it, I want a telephone, a radio and a television set. All these are contacts and doors in the outer world' (Winifred Nicholson quoted in Andrew Nicholson, ed., Unknown Colour, Paintings, Letters, Writings by Winifred Nicholson, Faber and Faber, London, 1987, p. 234). For the artist, her bedroom was clearly a deeply personal space in which she spent much time, and so to have a picture painted from just this perspective is very special. It is telling that of the above requirements, the window is utmost, and its function in providing an outlook to the natural world must have been, for her, paramount. From the variety of flowers depicted, which include the distinctive bell-shaped blooms of speckled purple and white fritillaries, the season looks to be Spring, with the potted indoor plants protected from the worst of any frosts by their safe position on the windowsill, where they can bask in the warming sun. The six-petalled blue starry flowers are chionodoxa, 'glory of the snow', another spring-flowering bulb which blossoms in dainty sprays. The leaves and flowers in the foreground are intermingled with the just-budding, wayward branches of saplings and trees which fill the garden beyond. The compositional involvement of a half-drawn curtain, patterned with flying birds, further expands on a theme of the revolving cycle of seasonal changes which form a major focus of her work.Nicholson is famed for the attention dedicated to and singular skill displayed in depicting her floral subjects, which is unique. As a review in the Times noted in 1927 of a joint exhibition with Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood was to observe, 'there is something of an April spirit in her work...in her flower paintings the escape from realism into a new reality, as lovely as that of Nature, and charged with human feeling, is complete.' (The Times, 21 April 1927, quoted in Christopher Andreae, Winifred Nicholson, Lund Humphries, Farnham, 2009, p.73).We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Scott was one of the first British artists to become aware of Abstract Expressionism from his time spent in the USA during the 1950s and his friendship with pioneers such as Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning were both unique and informative. Alongside contemporaries such as Patrick Heron, he was able to absorb the lessons of the movement and translate it within the European tradition to create a uniquely British style. Dating to 1970, Still Life No.1 demonstrates the purity of the artist's vision with the simplicity of the delineated forms and clean, graphic lines. The picture surface, with frying pan and mug, is flat and the rich ochre colour dominant, enhancing the sense of reduction and placing the work towards abstraction yet grounded in reality. The present work is registered in the William Scott Archive as number 1294 and we are grateful to the William Scott Foundation for their assistance in cataloguing this work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
