* RONALD F SMITH RSW RGI (SCOTTISH) CLOUDS oil on canvas, signed and dated 1979 on reverse 110cm x 115cm Note : Smith was born in Glasgow and graduated in Drawing and Painting from the highly respected Glasgow School of Art in 1969. The very painterly style of Smith`s work forms a large part of its attraction. Rough pastel scrapes of paint are applied to the canvas, under which glimpses of sumptuous colour can be seen. His subject matters are familiar-still life, landscapes and sky scenes-but Smith manages to convey an intense atmosphere in what he paints. Each of his works are beautiful to behold and must be seen in the flesh to absorb the warmth which radiates from them. Smith has exhibited widely across Scotland and in Cornwall, Oxfordshire and London. His awards include the David Cargill Award and the John Cunningham Award. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 1999, and as member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 2008. In December of 2006 Smith was listed by the Glasgow Herald as one of the top 50 Scottish Artists to invest in, and in 2008 was been included in the 33rd edition of Who`s Who in Art. He was recently described as probably the best painter working in Scotland today.
SIR JOHN LAVERY RA (IRISH 1856-1941) PORTRAIT OF MARY oil on canvas, signed verso 30cm x 24cm Provenance : Sitter`s name taken from the original letter from Lavery to the sitter, which is to be sold with this lot. Note : The artist John Lavery was born in Belfast, and studied in Scotland at the Glasgow School of Art from about 1874. After finishing studies at the Glasgow School of Art he set up as an independent artist at 23, further studying in London and Paris. He then became a leading member of informal group of painters known as the Glasgow School or `Glasgow Boys` with works characterised by great energy. His first success came with the showing of his `Tennis Party` at the Royal Academy, London, in 1886; it was much admired and, better still, bought for the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. Two years later he received a commission to paint the state visit of Queen Victoria to the Glasgow Exhibition, and this gave him social connections that brought him valuable commissions for the next fifty years. His career from then on was one of uninterrupted success. Knighted 1918, elected member of the RA 1921; he was also a member of the RHA, Royal Scottish Academy, and the academies of Rome, Antwerp, Milan, Brussels, and Stockholm. He received honorary degrees from QUB and TCD and was made a freeman of Belfast and Dublin. At 84 he published his autobiography, `The Life of a Painter` (1940). Died at Rosenarra House, Kilkenny, 10 January 1941.
