An interesting item of Nelson memorabilia, a George III Guinea 1787, Nearly Extremely Fine. Mounted as a pin brooch with a small ring at top for a safety chain and housed in a Georgian Hallmarked silver (Birmingham 1805) vignette with gilt interior (no fret but pad still retains a feint perfume). The vignette contained in an ebony hinged box with purple velvet lining bearing two die stamped brass fouled anchors overlaid with life belts, in the centres of which are a half length portrait of Nelson and “Trafalgar 21 October 1805” (Typical of 1905 souvenirs) on the front panel of the box is a silver plate engraved “Nelson Guinea. Found aboard Victory amongst personal effects of the Hero of Trafalgar. Graciously loaned to this Centenary Exhibition by the family of the Late Horatia Nelson Ward to whom the coin had been presented in infancy as a memento of her beloved father” Plate 2. Note: a letter of provenance included with the lot states “that the coin given to Horatia mounted as a piece of keepsake jewelry and passed down through the Nelson-Ward family to Rev. Hugh Nelson-Ward. Who was a close friend of my uncle, Rev Robert Evans (Royal Navy College Chaplain)..” To this end the coin was displayed at various naval functions and exhibitions organised by the Rev Robert Evans. On his death the coin passed to his brother, the Vendor’s father. A photograph of a Centenary Dinner by a Southsea photographer is also included with the lot as with various documents.
