In 1998, he was invited to teach and show examples of his work in Red Deer College of Art and Design in Alberto, Canada. Alexander's subject matter for his work includes still life, landscape and portraits using a variety of media: oil, gouache, pastel and watercolour. Special emphasis is placed on strong tonal contrast and rich colour, which follows in the tradition of the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists.
